Chapter 6: The Man Outside the Window
For a moment, nobody moved.
The picture remained on Emily's phone screen.
A man standing across the street.
A man who was supposed to be dead.
A man who had spent six years hiding from the world while secretly watching my wife.
Watching us.
Watching my son.
I stared at the photograph until my eyes started to hurt.
There was something terrifying about how calm he looked.
He wasn't running.
He wasn't hiding.
He wasn't even trying to cover his face.
He wanted us to know he was there.
That was the part that scared me the most.
Daniel wasn't afraid of being found.
He wanted to be found.
“James.””
Emily's voice sounded distant.
I looked at her.
She was holding the baby tighter now.
Like somehow her arms could become a shield.
Like she could protect him from a man who had already reached us.
“How long has he been here?””
She shook her head.
“I don't know.””
“You don't know?””
“No.””
“Emily, your father is standing outside the hospital.””
“I know.””
“And you're telling me you don't know how long?””
She closed her eyes.
“I don't know.””
I turned away.
I wanted to scream.
I wanted to break something.
But there was a newborn baby in the room.
My newborn baby.
So I stood there with all that anger trapped inside my chest.
Adrian picked up the phone from the bed.
He looked at the picture.
His expression changed immediately.
“He's older.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
“Daniel.””
His eyes stayed on the screen.
“He looks different.””
“You've seen him?””
Adrian nodded slowly.
“Once.””
“When?””
“Six years ago.””
Emily looked at him.
“You never told me.””
“I didn't want to scare you.””
She stared at him.
“That's not your choice.””
Adrian looked away.
“I know.””
I took the phone from him.
“Tell me everything.””
Nobody answered.
My voice became sharper.
“Now.””
Emily looked at Adrian.
Then at me.
“James…”
“No.””
I shook my head.
“I am done hearing pieces of the truth.””
I pointed at the phone.
“I need the whole story.””
Emily looked down.
The silence lasted too long.
Then she whispered:
“Six years ago, when I contacted Adrian…”
She stopped.
I waited.
“I wasn't trying to see him.””
I looked at her.
“Then why were you with him?””
Her eyes filled.
“Because I was trying to disappear.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“My father found me.””
I already knew that part.
But hearing it again made my stomach twist.
“He knew where we lived.””
My face changed.
“Our apartment?””
She nodded.
“He left something at our door.””
“What?””
“A photograph.””
“Of what?””
Emily swallowed.
“Of you.””
The room became silent.
I felt cold.
“He was watching me?””
“Yes.””
“Watching us?””
“Yes.””
I looked toward the window.
The hospital suddenly felt less safe.
The walls.
The locked doors.
The security cameras.
None of it mattered.
Because somehow Daniel had entered our lives without us knowing.
“What did he want?””
Emily looked down.
“Me.””
I stared.
“Just you?””
She didn't answer.
I already knew.
“No.””
Her eyes lifted.
“He wanted control.””
I nodded slowly.
“Of course he did.””
Daniel wasn't a father.
Not in the way normal people understood that word.
He didn't love.
He owned.
And people who believe they own others don't accept losing them.
“So what happened?””
Emily took a shaky breath.
“I called Adrian.””
I looked at him.
“Why him?””
“Because he knew about my father.””
“How?””
“Because before I met you, Adrian had discovered something.””
Adrian nodded.
“I found financial records.””
I frowned.
“What kind of records?””
“Payments.””
“To who?””
“People who helped him cover things up.””
My stomach tightened.
“What things?””
Emily looked away.
The answer was obvious.
Too obvious.
Her silence confirmed it.
“Your father hurt people.””
She nodded.
“Yes.””
“How many?””
“I don't know.””
That answer bothered me.
Because it meant she had spent years living beside a nightmare.
And I had never known.
“I found evidence,” Adrian continued.
“Against Daniel?””
“Yes.””
“Why didn't you go to the police?””
He looked at Emily.
“Because Daniel knew.””
I frowned.
“Knew what?””
“That I had it.””
The room became quiet.
“He threatened me too.””
I looked at him.
“You?””
“Yes.””
For the first time, I saw Adrian differently.
Not as the man who destroyed my marriage.
But as another person trapped in Daniel's world.
“He told me if I exposed him, he would make sure Emily suffered.””
Emily closed her eyes.
“So we both stayed quiet.””
I looked at her.
“You both?””
“Yes.””
“And I was the only person who didn't know?””
Her expression broke.
“Yes.””
That answer hurt more than I expected.
Not because she admitted it.
Because she admitted it so easily.
Like she had accepted that I was outside the circle.
Like protecting me meant excluding me.
I walked toward the window.
Outside, the hospital parking lot was visible.
Cars moved slowly.
People walked in and out.
And somewhere among them…
Daniel was there.
I searched the crowd.
Nothing.
“Where is he now?””
Nobody answered.
I turned.
“Where is he now?””
Adrian walked closer.
“Probably gone.””
“Probably?””
“He doesn't stay in one place.””
“How convenient.””
“He wants us afraid.””
I looked at him.
“Then why come here?””
“Because he wants something.””
“What?””
Adrian looked at the baby.
And suddenly I hated that answer.
Because I already knew.
“He wants a connection.””
I stared.
“He wants my son.””
“Yes.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
Emily whispered:
“James…”
“No.””
I turned toward her.
“He is not getting near him.””
“I know.””
“You need to understand something.””
My voice became steady.
“I don't care who he is.””
I looked at the baby.
“I don't care if he's your father.””
Then at Emily.
“He doesn't get to walk back into your life and claim anything.””
Tears filled her eyes.
“I know.””
“Do you?””
“Yes.””
“Because six years ago, you made decisions without me.””
She flinched.
“Don't do that again.””
“I won't.””
“Promise me.””
She looked at me.
“I promise.””
For the first time in hours, I believed something she said.
Not completely.
Not yet.
But enough.
Then the room phone rang.
Everyone froze.
The sound was different from a normal call.
Louder.
Sharper.
Like an alarm.
A hospital phone.
Emily looked terrified.
“Don't answer.””
I stared at it.
“Why?””
“Because he wants you to.””
The phone kept ringing.
Adrian stepped forward.
“She's right.””
“Then why call?””
“Because he knows we are scared.””
The ringing continued.
Finally, it stopped.
A second later, the room phone's screen lit up.
A message appeared.
The hospital system.
Someone had sent a message to the room.
I walked closer.
The message was short.
*Look outside.*
Nobody spoke.
I slowly turned toward the window.
My heart started beating faster.
“James.””
Emily's voice was barely a whisper.
I looked outside.
Across the street.
Near the entrance.
A man stood there.
Daniel.
This time, there was no photograph.
No distance.
No mystery.
He was real.
Standing in the open.
Looking directly at our room.
I couldn't move.
Neither could Emily.
Even Adrian looked shaken.
Because seeing someone in a picture was one thing.
Seeing them looking back at you was another.
Daniel lifted his hand.
Not waving.
Just pointing.
At the window.
At us.
Then he raised his phone.
A second later, mine buzzed.
I looked down.
Unknown number.
One message.
*You have my grandson.*
Another message appeared.
*I have my daughter.*
My blood turned cold.
I looked at Emily.
Her face had gone completely white.
“What does that mean?””
She didn't answer.
“Emily.””
Her lips trembled.
“James…”
“What does that mean?””
She looked toward the window.
Then whispered:
“He took someone.””
My heart dropped.
“Who?””
She couldn't speak.
Adrian stepped forward.
“Emily.””
Her tears fell.
“My sister.””
I stared.
“What?””
“My father found my sister.””
The room went silent.
The baby cried softly.
But nobody moved.
Nobody reacted.
Because suddenly this wasn't just about my wife.
It wasn't just about me.
Daniel had reached into the past.
He had taken the one person Emily had spent six years trying to save.
The one person who represented the reason she ran.
Her little sister.
I looked back at the window.
Daniel was still there.
Still watching.
Still calm.
Still in control.
My phone buzzed again.
Another message.
I opened it.
*Bring my daughter to me.*
Then another.
*Or your son learns what losing family feels like.*
I felt every muscle in my body tighten.
Emily covered her mouth.
“No…”
Adrian looked at me.
“This is what he does.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
“He doesn't attack people directly.””
His voice was quiet.
“He makes them choose.””
I stared at Daniel outside.
The man who had spent six years hiding.
The man who had just destroyed the happiest day of my life.
And I finally understood.
He didn't come back because he wanted forgiveness.
He didn't come back because he wanted his daughter.
He came back because he wanted control.
And now he had found the one thing that could break all of us.
Family.
I looked at Emily.
She was crying.
I looked at Adrian.
He looked terrified.
Then I looked at my son.
Sleeping peacefully.
Unaware of the war happening around him.
And in that moment, I made a decision.
A decision that would change everything.
Daniel wanted me to play his game.
He wanted me scared.
He wanted me desperate.
But he had made one mistake.
He had threatened my family.
And there was one thing Daniel didn't understand.
I wasn't the man he thought I was.
I wasn't someone who would stand by and watch.
Not anymore.
I grabbed my jacket.
Emily looked at me.
“James?””
I looked at her.
“I’m going to get your sister.””
Her eyes widened.
“No.””
“Yes.””
“You don't understand what you're walking into.””
I looked at Daniel through the window.
“Yes, I do.””
Then I looked back at her.
“I finally do.””
And for the first time since this nightmare began…
Emily wasn't looking at me like someone she needed to protect.
She was looking at me like someone she needed beside her.
But before I could take another step, Adrian's phone rang.
He answered.
His face changed immediately.
“What?””
Silence.
Then:
“No.””
He looked at me.
And I knew.
Something else had happened.
“What is it?””
Adrian slowly lowered the phone.
His voice was barely audible.
“He wasn't alone.””
I frowned.
“What?””
Adrian looked at Emily.
Then me.
“There was someone else with Daniel.””
My stomach tightened.
“Who?””
Adrian swallowed.
“The person who gave him your phone number.””
The room went silent.
“Who?””
Adrian looked at Emily.
And the fear in his eyes told me the answer was something none of us were ready to hear.
May you like
“Your wife’s mother.””
Susan.
