Chapter 6: The Woman in the Locked Room
Evelyn pushed me through a narrow door behind her office.
I stumbled into a storage room filled with filing cabinets.
She followed and locked the door.
“Stay here.””
“What about you?””
“I'll deal with him.””
“No.””
“Nia, listen to me.””
She grabbed my shoulders.
“If Daniel finds you, he will take that USB drive. And if he takes it, we lose the only evidence connecting him to Claire.””
A crash echoed from the front office.
Someone had forced the door.
Evelyn looked toward the ceiling.
“There's another exit through the archive room. Follow the corridor until you reach the back stairs.””
I shook my head.
“I'm not leaving you.””
She gave me a tired smile.
“Your mother said exactly the same thing.””
Then she pushed a small envelope into my hand.
“Take this. Don't open it until you're somewhere safe.””
“What is it?””
“Your mother's final instructions.””
Footsteps approached.
Evelyn turned off the small flashlight.
“Go.””
I slipped through the second door.
Behind me, I heard her raise her voice.
“Daniel, you have no right to be here!””
His reply was calm.
“Evelyn, we both know you should have stayed retired.””
I kept moving.
The corridor smelled of dust and damp plaster.
I reached the back stairs and pushed open the exit.
Cold air hit my face.
I ran.
At 1:16 a.m., I arrived at St. Agnes Medical Residence.
The building stood on the outskirts of the city, surrounded by tall trees and an iron fence.
A security guard sat behind a glass window.
I approached the desk.
“I'm looking for a patient named Claire Bennett.””
He glanced at his computer.
“Are you family?””
“Yes.””
“Your name?””
“Nia Bennett.””
He typed.
Then frowned.
“I'm sorry. There's no patient by that name.””
I felt my stomach tighten.
“Could you check Claire Whitmore?””
His fingers stopped moving.
He looked up.
“Who gave you that name?””
I didn't answer.
He stood.
“Please wait here.””
He disappeared through a door.
I checked my phone.
No signal.
I pulled the envelope from Evelyn's bag and opened it.
Inside was a handwritten letter.
The first line was enough to bring tears to my eyes.
My darling Nia,
If you're reading this, I have failed to bring your sister home myself.
I sat down.
The letter continued.
You were only three when Claire disappeared. You probably don't remember her, but she loved you fiercely. She used to carry your little blanket everywhere and cry if anyone tried to take it.
I pressed the paper against my chest.
When she vanished, I searched every hospital, every shelter, every police station I could find. I never stopped.
Years later, I discovered she had been found. But by then, Daniel's family had already taken control of her records.
I made a terrible mistake by trusting him.
My hands trembled.
Daniel told me Claire was too fragile to return home. He said she needed specialist care. He convinced me that seeing her would damage her recovery.
I believed him.
Then I discovered the truth.
Claire remembered everything.
I stopped reading.
My eyes returned to the sentence.
Claire remembered everything.
The letter continued.
She remembered who took her. She remembered the people who kept her hidden. And she remembered the night someone came to her room and told her that her family had forgotten her.
I couldn't breathe.
A door opened behind me.
The security guard returned.
“Ms. Bennett?””
“Yes?””
“Please come with me.””
He led me through a hallway.
The walls were painted pale blue. A television played quietly in a common room where two elderly patients sat watching the news.
We passed several closed doors.
Then he stopped outside Room 214.
“She's been asking about you.””
My heart hammered.
“Claire?””
He nodded.
I opened the door.
A woman sat beside the window.
The same woman from the photograph.
Her hair was tied back loosely. She wore a cream cardigan over a hospital gown.
When she turned, her eyes widened.
For several seconds, neither of us spoke.
Then she stood.
“Nia?””
My lips trembled.
“Claire?””
She covered her mouth.
“Oh, my God.””
I took one step forward.
Then another.
She reached for me.
And when her arms closed around my shoulders, I broke.
I cried into her cardigan.
She held me tightly, her fingers moving through my hair.
“You came,” she whispered.
“I didn't know.””
“I know.””
“I didn't know you existed.””
She pulled back and touched my face.
“You have Mom's eyes.””
I laughed through my tears.
“So do you.””
She smiled.
For a moment, we were simply two sisters meeting after a lifetime apart.
Then Claire looked toward the door.
Her expression changed.
“Did Daniel send you?””
“No.””
“Does he know you're here?””
“I don't think so.””
She stepped away.
“Nia, you need to leave.””
“What?””
“Now.””
“I just found you.””
“I know. But you shouldn't have come.””
I stared at her.
“Claire, what happened to you?””
She looked down at her hands.
“They told me I was abandoned.””
“Who?””
“Daniel's father. Then Daniel.””
She swallowed.
“They said Mom had died years ago. They told me nobody wanted me.””
My chest tightened.
“That isn't true.””
“I know that now.””
She walked to a small bedside cabinet and opened it.
Inside was a photograph of our mother.
The same photograph Evelyn had shown me.
But this one had writing on the back.
Claire handed it to me.
*October 14. The day I found my girls again.*
I looked at her.
“Did Mom visit you?””
Claire nodded.
“She came here three weeks before she died.””
“Why didn't she take you home?””
“Daniel came before she could.””
“What happened?””
Claire's eyes filled with tears.
“He told her she had to choose.””
“Choose what?””
“Me or you.””
I felt sick.
Claire took my hand.
“Mom refused. She said she wasn't leaving either daughter behind.””
“What did Daniel do?””
“He told her he'd make sure neither of us ever saw her again.””
I stared at the photograph.
Then I looked back at Claire.
“Why didn't you tell anyone?””
“I tried. But nobody believed me. My medical records said I had memory problems. Daniel had legal authority over my care.””
“That's why he adopted you?””
Claire nodded.
“He said it was temporary. He told everyone he was helping a vulnerable woman who had no family.””
I sat on the edge of the bed.
“How did you get away?””
She looked toward the window.
“Someone helped me.””
“Who?””
“A nurse named Rachel. She discovered that Daniel was transferring money from the facility into a private account. She copied the records and contacted a journalist.””
“Where is she now?””
Claire's face went pale.
“Missing.””
A noise came from the hallway.
Footsteps.
Claire immediately stood.
“Nia, you have to hide.””
“Why?””
She grabbed my hand and pulled me toward the bathroom.
“Because Daniel knows.””
The room door opened.
A nurse stepped inside.
She was holding a clipboard.
“Claire, you have a visitor.””
Claire went completely still.
The nurse looked at me.
Then smiled.
“Mr. Whitmore is here.””
My stomach dropped.
Daniel stepped into the room.
His expensive coat was damp from the rain.
He looked at me.
Then at Claire.
He didn't seem surprised.
In fact, he smiled.
“Family reunion,” he said.
I moved between him and my sister.
“Stay away from her.””
Daniel sighed.
“Nia, you're making this much more complicated than it needs to be.””
Claire stepped behind me.
“You told me she was dead,” she whispered.
Daniel's smile disappeared.
“Claire, go sit down.””
“You told me my mother was dead.””
“That's enough.””
“You told me Nia didn't want me.””
Daniel's jaw tightened.
I turned toward Claire.
“What is she talking about?””
Claire's eyes filled with tears.
Then she said the words that shattered everything I thought I knew.
“Daniel didn't just keep me here.””
She pointed at him.
“He was the man who took me when I was five.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“That's a lie.””
Claire shook her head.
“No. I remember his voice.””
She looked directly at me.
“I remember the night he came into my room.””
Her fingers tightened around mine.
“And I remember what he said.””
Daniel's expression hardened.
“What did he say?”” I whispered.
Claire's voice trembled.
“He told me that if I ever saw my mother again, he would make sure you disappeared too.””
Daniel moved toward us.
I reached for my phone.
But Claire suddenly screamed.
“Don't let him take the red folder!””
Daniel froze.
I looked at her.
“What red folder?””
Claire pointed toward the bedside cabinet.
“Mom left it here.””
Daniel lunged.
I grabbed the cabinet first and pulled it open.
Inside was a thick red folder.
Daniel caught my wrist.
“Give it to me.””
I pulled away.
The folder fell open.
Documents scattered across the floor.
And one page landed face up between us.
It was a birth certificate.
My name appeared at the top.
Nia Bennett.
Mother: Margaret Bennett.
Father:
I stared at the blank space.
There was no name.
But beneath it, in handwriting I recognized, someone had added a note.
*Paternity confirmed. Daniel Whitmore.*
I looked up.
Daniel was no longer smiling.
Claire began crying.
And I finally understood why he had spent three years pretending to love me.
Marcus wasn't the only person he had wanted to erase.
He had been hiding the truth about my family from the very beginning.
May you like
*Daniel Whitmore was not just my sister's captor.*
*He was my biological father.*
