Chapter 12: The Father Who Wasn't Dead
The detention facility stood behind a row of abandoned warehouses.
There were no signs.
No reception desk.
Just a high fence, two security cameras, and a steel gate.
Marcus parked several hundred feet away.
“Richard has been here for years,” he said.
Ethan stared through the windshield.
“Why didn't anyone know?””
“Because Daniel arranged for him to be declared dead.””
Claire leaned forward.
“Is he dangerous?””
Marcus shook his head.
“Not physically. But he's been through a lot.””
I looked at the building.
“Why are we here?””
“Because your mother left instructions with Evelyn. If anything happened to her, Richard was supposed to be released.””
“Then why hasn't he been released?””
Marcus looked at me.
“Because Daniel controls the documents.””
Ethan clenched his fists.
“Then let's get him out.””
Marcus shook his head.
“We need proof first. If we break in, Daniel will have an excuse to destroy everything.””
I pulled out the recording device.
“Will this help?””
Marcus listened to the section where Daniel admitted being my father.
His expression tightened.
“It helps.””
“Enough?””
“No.””
I felt frustration rising.
“Then what do we need?””
“Richard's testimony. And the original birth records.””
Claire looked toward the gate.
“Then we get them.””
At 2:40 p.m., Evelyn arrived.
Her forehead was bandaged.
One sleeve of her coat was torn.
I rushed toward her.
“Are you okay?””
She gave me a tired smile.
“Daniel's men aren't particularly gentle.””
“What happened?””
“They searched my office. Took everything they could find.””
“Did they get the red folder?””
“No.””
She reached into her bag and pulled out a small envelope.
“Your mother knew this day might come.””
Inside was a letter addressed to Richard Bennett.
Evelyn handed it to Marcus.
“It's his release authorization.””
Marcus examined it.
“It's missing the official seal.””
“Because Daniel stole the original.””
I looked at the building.
“Can we get another one?””
Evelyn shook her head.
“Not without proving the first authorization was legitimate.””
Ethan stepped forward.
“What if we have the person who signed it?””
Everyone looked at him.
He held up a document from the envelope Daniel had given him.
At the bottom was a signature.
Richard Bennett.
“I found this in Daniel's office two weeks ago,” Ethan explained.
“I thought it was an old business contract.””
Evelyn examined it.
Her eyes widened.
“This is the original guardianship agreement.””
“Can it help?””
“Yes. It proves Richard was alive when Daniel arranged his detention.””
Marcus looked at me.
“That's enough to start.””
We entered through the main gate with Evelyn leading.
She identified herself as legal counsel and presented the documents.
The guard studied them.
Then he picked up the phone.
A few minutes later, a supervisor appeared.
“Mr. Bennett is not available.””
Evelyn remained calm.
“Under what authority is he being held?””
“Administrative order.””
“Show me the order.””
The supervisor hesitated.
Then he disappeared into an office.
Marcus leaned toward me.
“Stay close.””
A door opened at the end of the corridor.
An elderly man emerged.
He walked slowly.
His hair was almost entirely white.
His face was thin.
But when he looked at me, something changed.
He stopped.
His lips parted.
“Nia?””
I felt my knees weaken.
Richard Bennett.
The man my mother had once loved.
The man I had believed was dead.
He took one uncertain step forward.
“Margaret's little girl?””
I nodded.
“I'm Nia.””
His eyes filled.
“Oh, sweetheart.””
He reached for me.
I stepped into his arms.
He held me carefully, as if he were afraid I might disappear.
“I'm so sorry,” he whispered.
I started crying.
“Why didn't you come for me?””
He closed his eyes.
“Because they told me you were dead.””
I pulled away.
“What?””
Richard looked at Marcus.
Then at Evelyn.
“Who told you?”” I asked.
He swallowed.
“Daniel.””
My stomach tightened.
“He told you I died?””
Richard nodded.
“He said there had been an accident. He showed me a hospital record. He said Margaret had lost both you and the other baby.””
I shook my head.
“What other baby?””
Richard looked toward Ethan.
His face changed.
“Ethan?””
My brother stepped forward.
“Do you know me?””
Richard began trembling.
“Oh, my God.””
He touched Ethan's cheek.
“You were so small.””
Ethan's eyes filled.
“Are you my father?””
Richard nodded.
“Yes.””
Ethan looked away.
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then Richard sat down.
“I need to tell you what happened.””
We gathered around him.
He looked at me first.
“Your mother and I were married. I loved her. I loved all three of you.””
“Then why did Daniel say you were dead?””
“Because I discovered he was changing the medical records.””
Richard explained that Daniel had been working for the family business when he found a way to redirect funds through medical facilities.
At first, Richard believed the money was being used for legitimate research.
Then he discovered that several children had been admitted under false identities.
Including Claire.
Richard confronted Daniel.
Daniel threatened to expose Margaret's affair and destroy the family.
But Richard refused to back down.
One night, he was attacked outside his home.
He woke up in a hospital.
Daniel was standing beside his bed.
He told Richard that Margaret had died.
Then he told him that all three children had died too.
Richard broke down.
“I believed him,” he whispered.
I held his hand.
“What happened after that?””
“They transferred me here. They said I was being held for my own protection while the police investigated an alleged financial crime.””
“Did you ever contact Mom?””
“Once.””
His voice cracked.
“She came to see me.””
I leaned forward.
“When?””
“Three weeks before she died.””
I felt my breath catch.
“What did she say?””
Richard looked at Evelyn.
Evelyn nodded.
“She told me she had found Claire. She said she had found Ethan too.””
Ethan frowned.
“Then why didn't she tell us?””
“Because she was afraid Daniel would take you again.””
Richard looked at me.
“She also told me something about your birth.””
I sat very still.
“What?””
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small folded photograph.
It showed three newborn babies in hospital bassinets.
Two girls.
One boy.
Their tiny hands were touching through the gaps between the beds.
On the back was my mother's handwriting.
*My three miracles. Nia, Claire, and Ethan.*
Richard smiled through his tears.
“She told me you were all healthy. She said she wanted to bring you home together.””
I looked at him.
“Then why did Daniel say there was another baby who died?””
Richard's smile disappeared.
“Because he needed a reason to separate you.””
He looked toward Marcus.
“Daniel didn't steal just one child.””
Marcus nodded slowly.
“He stole all three.””
Richard leaned forward.
“But there's something else.””
He opened his hand.
A small silver key rested in his palm.
“Your mother gave me this before she died.””
“What does it open?””
“A safety deposit box.””
“Where?””
“First National Bank. Downtown.””
Evelyn frowned.
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“Because Margaret told me to wait until all three children were together.””
I looked around the room.
Claire.
Ethan.
Me.
For the first time, we were all in the same place.
Richard smiled.
“She said the box contained the truth about your father.””
I stared at him.
“You're our father.””
He shook his head slowly.
“Not all of you.””
The room went silent.
I looked at Claire.
Then Ethan.
“What do you mean?””
Richard took a shaky breath.
“Claire and Ethan are my biological children.””
My heart started racing.
“And me?””
He looked directly into my eyes.
“Margaret told me you were mine too. But shortly before she died, she confessed something.””
I could barely speak.
“What?””
Richard's eyes filled.
“She said Daniel had switched the hospital records when you were born.””
I felt the blood drain from my face.
Richard continued.
“The baby Margaret gave birth to was not the baby she brought home.””
I gripped the chair.
“Then who am I?””
Richard looked at me with unbearable sadness.
“I don't know, sweetheart.””
He paused.
“But your mother believed Daniel knew.””
Ethan stepped forward.
“Why would Daniel switch babies?””
Richard looked at the key in his palm.
“Because he wanted to hide the identity of another child.””
Marcus frowned.
“Another child?””
Richard nodded.
“The daughter of a woman who died giving birth the same night Margaret delivered you.””
I stared at him.
Then he said the name.
“Isabella Whitmore.””
My entire body went cold.
“Who was she?””
Richard looked at me.
“Daniel's first daughter.””
Before anyone could respond, Evelyn's phone rang.
She answered.
Listened.
Then slowly lowered it.
“What happened?”” Marcus asked.
Evelyn looked at me.
Her voice was barely audible.
“The bank has just reported a break-in.””
I looked at the silver key.
“Did they take the contents?””
Evelyn nodded.
“Everything.””
Richard closed his eyes.
Then he whispered:
“Daniel knows who you really are.””
A second later, my phone lit up.
A photograph appeared.
It showed a woman standing outside the bank.
She looked exactly like me.
Underneath it was a message.
*You finally found your family, Isabella.*
May you like
Another message followed.
*Now ask Daniel why he let the wrong daughter grow up in his house.*
