Chapter 14: The Family Gathering

The Whitmore estate stood on twenty acres of private land outside the city.

A long stone driveway led to a white mansion with tall windows and a circular fountain.

I had never been there.

But when I stepped out of Marcus's car, something about the place felt familiar.

Perhaps it was the photographs.

Perhaps it was the fact that Daniel had spent so many years controlling my life from behind those walls.

Ethan adjusted his jacket.

“Ready?””

“No.””

He nodded.

“Me neither.””

Claire approached us.

She was wearing the necklace our mother had given her before she disappeared.

A small silver heart.

I touched it.

“Mom had one just like that.””

Claire smiled sadly.

“She bought two.””

“Where's the other?””

She reached into her pocket and showed me another necklace.

The matching heart.

I took it carefully.

Inside was a tiny engraving.

*Together, always.*

My eyes filled.

Marcus placed a hand on my shoulder.

“We're here for the truth.””

I nodded.

Then the front doors opened.

Daniel stood beneath the chandelier.

He wore a dark suit and a white shirt.

He looked like the man who had taken me to dinner the night Marcus called.

Polished.

Confident.

Untouchable.

“Welcome home,” he said.

I didn't move.

“This isn't my home.””

He smiled.

“Of course it is.””

Behind him stood a woman.

The woman from the photograph.

My face.

My eyes.

My scar.

She looked at me and began crying.

“Isabella?””

I stared at her.

“I don't know who I am anymore.””

She approached slowly.

“My name is Catherine.””

I frowned.

“Catherine?””

“I'm your biological mother.””

The room seemed to tilt.

Daniel stepped aside.

Catherine reached for my hands.

“I've waited thirty years to meet you.””

I couldn't move.

“That's impossible. Catherine Whitmore died giving birth.””

She shook her head.

“That's what Daniel told everyone.””

Daniel sighed.

“Must we do this here?””

Catherine turned toward him.

“You've had thirty years to explain yourself.””

I looked at her.

“Why didn't you come for me?””

She began crying.

“Because I was told you were dead.””

Richard stepped forward.

“Catherine?””

She looked at him.

“Richard.””

He stared at her.

“Margaret told me you had died.””

Catherine shook her head.

“Daniel arranged everything. He told me my baby had died. He said the hospital had made a mistake and that there was nothing left to investigate.””

Evelyn opened her folder.

“Do you have proof?””

Catherine nodded.

She removed a small envelope from her handbag.

Inside were photographs, hospital records, and a handwritten letter.

“My husband gave me this before he died.””

Daniel laughed.

“Your husband?””

Catherine looked at him.

“Thomas Reed.””

Marcus went completely still.

“My father?””

Catherine nodded.

“Thomas discovered what Daniel was doing. He helped me escape after I found out Isabella was alive.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“Then why did you disappear?””

Catherine's face crumpled.

“Because Daniel threatened to kill you.””

Marcus stared at her.

“You let me believe you were dead.””

“I'm sorry.””

He looked away.

Catherine turned toward me.

“Thomas and I spent years trying to find you. We finally discovered that Daniel had placed you with Margaret.””

I shook my head.

“Why would Margaret raise another woman's child?””

“Because she believed you were one of her daughters. She loved you from the moment she held you.””

I looked at Richard.

He nodded.

“Margaret never knew which baby had been switched.””

Catherine held my hands tighter.

“She didn't know you weren't her biological daughter. But she was your mother in every way that mattered.””

I started crying.

I had spent the entire day trying to understand who I was.

And suddenly, I understood something.

I had two mothers.

One who gave birth to me.

And one who raised me.

Daniel watched us.

Then he clapped slowly.

“How touching.””

Ethan turned toward him.

“Shut up.””

Daniel ignored him.

“Catherine, you really should have stayed away.””

She stepped forward.

“No more lies.””

Daniel laughed.

“You think these people will believe you?””

Evelyn placed the documents on the table.

“We have the original hospital records, financial transfers, medical files, and recordings of your admissions.””

Daniel's smile disappeared.

Catherine added:

“And I have the original trust documents.””

Daniel stared at her.

“Give them to me.””

“No.””

He stepped closer.

“You have no idea what you're doing.””

“I know exactly what I'm doing.””

She pulled a document from the envelope.

“Isabella's inheritance was supposed to be transferred when she turned thirty. You spent decades hiding her because you wanted control of the estate.””

Daniel's face hardened.

“That's not true.””

“Then explain the money you transferred from her trust.””

Silence.

Evelyn opened her laptop.

“We've already sent the records to the financial crimes division.””

Daniel looked at the laptop.

Then at Marcus.

“You.””

Marcus nodded.

“It's over.””

Daniel laughed.

“No. You still don't understand.””

He reached into his jacket and pulled out a remote control.

The room went silent.

“What is that?”” Claire asked.

Daniel pressed a button.

A screen descended from the ceiling.

A video appeared.

It showed a woman sitting in a hospital room.

Margaret.

My mother.

Alive.

Not the photograph from the USB.

A moving image.

She looked directly at the camera.

“Daniel, if you're showing them this, then you've finally lost control.””

I stopped breathing.

My mother's voice filled the mansion.

“I know you believe you can keep everyone separated forever. But you made one mistake.””

She smiled sadly.

“You thought love was something you could steal and rename.””

Daniel stood motionless.

The recording continued.

“The truth about Isabella is not the only secret I left behind. You have spent years telling everyone that Thomas Reed died. You told Marcus that his father was dead.

You told Catherine her daughter was dead. You told Richard that his children were dead.””

My mother paused.

“But Thomas survived.””

Marcus's eyes widened.

The recording continued.

“And he has the original evidence.””

The screen went black.

Daniel stared at it.

Then he looked toward the front entrance.

A voice came from behind us.

“Hello, Daniel.””

Everyone turned.

An older man stood in the doorway.

Grey hair.

Dark coat.

A walking stick.

Marcus staggered backward.

“Dad?””

Thomas Reed smiled.

“Hello, son.””

Marcus ran toward him.

They embraced.

For several seconds, neither spoke.

Then Thomas turned toward Daniel.

“I think it's time we finished this.””

Daniel's face had gone white.

Thomas placed a small black briefcase on the table.

“Inside are the original hospital records, the trust documents, and the recordings you thought you'd destroyed.””

Daniel looked at the case.

Then at the people surrounding him.

For the first time, he appeared trapped.

But he wasn't finished.

He reached for Catherine's arm.

“Don't come any closer.””

A sharp metallic click echoed through the room.

I looked down.

Daniel was holding a gun.

Claire screamed.

Marcus stepped forward.

“Put it down.””

Daniel shook his head.

“Everybody stay where you are.””

He grabbed my wrist.

“You. Come with me.””

I froze.

Catherine began crying.

“Daniel, please.””

He pressed the gun against my side.

“Move.””

I looked at Marcus.

He was watching Daniel's hands.

Then I noticed something.

The remote control was still on the table.

And the screen had not completely gone dark.

A tiny red recording light was still blinking.

My mother had prepared another message.

I looked at Daniel.

“You said you loved me.””

He tightened his grip.

“I did.””

“No. You loved having control.””

His jaw clenched.

“You have no idea what I sacrificed.””

I looked directly into his eyes.

“You sacrificed everyone else.””

Then I heard sirens.

Daniel turned toward the windows.

Thomas smiled.

“You should have checked the driveway before you arrived.””

The front doors opened.

Police officers rushed inside.

Daniel tried to pull me toward the corridor.

But Ethan grabbed his arm.

The gun fired.

A deafening crack filled the room.

I fell to the floor.

Marcus screamed my name.

And as Daniel was tackled by two officers, I felt warm blood spreading across my sleeve.

The last thing I heard before everything went dark was Catherine shouting:

“Please! Don't let her die!””
