Chapter 13: The Daughter Daniel Was Hiding
I couldn't stop looking at the photograph.
The woman standing outside the bank had my face.
My eyes.
My nose.
The small scar above my left eyebrow.
Even the slight tilt of my head was identical.
But the message underneath her photograph made no sense.
*You finally found your family, Isabella.*
I looked at Richard.
“Who is Isabella Whitmore?””
Richard closed his eyes.
For several seconds, he didn't speak.
Then he said, “The daughter Daniel believed had died.””
Evelyn pulled a chair closer.
“Richard, we need the whole story.””
He nodded.
“Thirty years ago, Margaret and another woman gave birth at the same hospital. The woman's name was Catherine Whitmore. She was Daniel's wife.””
I stared at him.
“Daniel was married?””
“Yes. Catherine died shortly after giving birth. Her daughter was registered as Isabella Whitmore.””
Marcus leaned forward.
“And Margaret?””
“Margaret gave birth to Claire, Ethan, and Nia that same night. Three babies. But there was a complication. One of the nurses told Margaret that one of her daughters had died.””
Claire shook her head.
“Which daughter?””
Richard looked at me.
“Margaret never knew.””
I felt my stomach tighten.
Richard continued.
“Daniel was devastated by Catherine's death. He believed his daughter had died too. But several days later, someone told him that the baby had survived.””
“Who?””
“A hospital administrator connected to Daniel's father.””
I frowned.
“Then why did he need to switch the babies?””
Richard rubbed his forehead.
“Because Daniel's family was wealthy. Catherine had inherited a substantial estate. The inheritance was legally tied to Isabella's identity. If Isabella was declared dead, Daniel would inherit control of everything.””
Evelyn nodded.
“And if Isabella survived under another identity, he could keep her close without anyone knowing who she was.””
Richard looked at me.
“Margaret discovered the switch years later. She believed Daniel had taken Isabella and placed her among her own children.””
My hands went cold.
“So I might be Isabella?””
Richard nodded.
“That's what Margaret suspected.””
I stared at the photograph.
“Then who was I before she brought me home?””
Richard reached into his pocket and removed a folded hospital document.
“This is the original delivery record. Your mother's name is listed here. But the newborn identification number doesn't match the number on your birth certificate.””
Marcus took the paper.
He examined it carefully.
“Someone altered the identification numbers.””
Evelyn pointed to the bottom.
“Look at the initials.””
Two letters had been written beside the amendment.
D.W.
Daniel Whitmore.
I sat down.
“So Daniel knew who I was all along.””
Richard nodded.
“He raised you close to him because he wanted to monitor you. He couldn't risk you discovering your identity.””
Claire looked furious.
“He pretended to be our family friend.””
“He needed access,” Richard said.
“And he needed Margaret to believe he was helping.””
I thought about every birthday.
Every Christmas.
Every time Daniel had hugged me.
Every time he had called me sweetheart.
He hadn't been watching me grow up because he loved me.
He had been watching an inheritance.
“Does Isabella's estate still exist?”” I asked.
Evelyn answered.
“Yes. A trust was established after Catherine's death. It became accessible when Isabella turned thirty.””
I looked at the date.
My birthday was in six weeks.
Evelyn nodded.
“Which explains why Daniel has suddenly become desperate.””
Marcus stood.
“We need to find the woman in the photograph.””
I looked at him.
“Whoever she is, she knows something.””
Richard shook his head.
“Be careful. Daniel has spent decades controlling this story.””
Ethan picked up his phone.
“I'm going to call him.””
“No,” Marcus said.
Ethan ignored him.
He dialed.
The call connected after two rings.
Daniel's voice sounded almost cheerful.
“Son.””
Ethan switched on the speaker.
“Who is Isabella?””
Silence.
Then Daniel sighed.
“I wondered when you'd find out.””
“Is she alive?””
“Unfortunately.””
I leaned closer.
“Why did you switch the babies?””
Daniel laughed softly.
“Because your mother made a mistake.””
Richard gripped the table.
“Don't you dare blame Margaret.””
Daniel continued.
“Catherine was supposed to leave me an empire. Instead, she died and left me a child I couldn't protect.””
“You wanted her inheritance,” Evelyn said.
“Who is this?””
“Evelyn Shaw.””
Daniel's tone changed.
“Still interfering, Evelyn?””
Ethan raised his voice.
“Answer the question.””
Daniel sighed.
“Isabella was my daughter. I wanted her safe.””
“Then why did you hide her?””
“Because Margaret was dangerous.””
I stepped forward.
“You used my childhood to protect your money.””
Daniel laughed.
“Nia, you still don't understand. You were never supposed to be part of this family.””
I felt something inside me break.
“Then why did you stay?””
“Because you were useful.””
The words came without hesitation.
I closed my eyes.
Marcus reached for my hand.
Daniel continued.
“Listen carefully. The woman in that photograph is not your sister. She is a woman who has spent thirty years believing she was someone else.””
“Where is she?””
“Come and find out.””
“Tell me.””
“Tomorrow night. The Whitmore estate.””
Ethan frowned.
“Why should we trust you?””
“You shouldn't.””
Daniel ended the call.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then Marcus looked at the photograph again.
“There is something strange about this.””
“What?””
“The woman outside the bank isn't standing alone.””
He enlarged the image.
Behind her, reflected in the glass, was another person.
A man.
Wearing a dark coat.
Marcus zoomed in.
Then his face changed.
“That's impossible.””
“What?”” I asked.
He turned the screen toward me.
The man was older.
His hair was grey.
His face was thinner.
But I recognized him.
The man who had supposedly died in the river three years ago.
Marcus stared at the photograph.
Then he whispered:
“That's my father.””
We spent the next hour examining the image.
Marcus's father, Thomas Reed, had supposedly died when Marcus was seventeen.
A heart attack.
At least, that was what Marcus had always been told.
But the man in the reflection was unmistakably Thomas.
Marcus called the number attached to the photograph.
It rang once.
Then disconnected.
A message arrived.
*If you want to know why your father disappeared, come to the Whitmore estate tomorrow. Bring Nia.*
I looked at Marcus.
“Your father is alive too?””
He nodded slowly.
“Apparently.””
Claire leaned back.
“So Daniel has been keeping people hidden for decades.””
Richard looked toward the window.
“No,” he said quietly.
“Daniel hasn't been keeping them hidden.””
Everyone turned toward him.
“He's been keeping them separated.””
I looked down at the photograph.
And suddenly understood.
Daniel hadn't simply stolen children.
May you like
He had built an entire family out of secrets, lies, and people who were never allowed to meet.
And tomorrow, at the Whitmore estate, every one of those secrets was waiting.
