Chapter 8: The Bloodline That Was Never Supposed to Be Found

The entire world was watching.

Nathan could feel it.

The cameras surrounding him.

The reporters waiting for the next revelation.

The millions of people who would soon see the Cole family name dragged into the darkest scandal of its history.

But none of that mattered.

Not while Lily was standing only a few feet away.

Not while a document on a giant screen claimed to reveal the truth about his birth.

Nathan stared at the name displayed beneath the words:

*BIOLOGICAL FATHER*

His mind refused to process it.

Not Richard Cole.

Not Thomas Bennett.

Someone else.

Someone he had never heard of.

Someone whose existence had been erased.

The warehouse became silent.

Caroline watched him carefully.

She had expected shock.

She had expected anger.

She had expected him to collapse under the weight of the truth.

But Nathan did something she didn’t expect.

He looked at Lily.

Not the screen.

Not the cameras.

Not the empire that had defined his entire life.

His daughter.

“Is she scared?”” Nathan asked quietly.

Caroline frowned.

“What?””

Nathan looked at Lily.

“Is my daughter scared?””

The question confused everyone.

Caroline looked toward the child.

Lily was holding her teddy bear tightly.

Her eyes were fixed on Nathan.

“I want my mommy,” she whispered.

Nathan’s heart broke.

He stepped forward.

“Lily.””

Caroline raised her hand.

“Stay where you are.””

Nathan ignored her.

“You promised me she would be safe.””

The confidence in his voice changed the room.

Caroline hesitated.

Because Nathan was right.

This was never supposed to be about hurting Lily.

It was supposed to be about exposing the truth.

“Bring her to me.””

Caroline looked at him.

“You think you can command me?””

“No.””

Nathan looked at the cameras.

“I think everyone watching can see what’s happening.””

A few reporters shifted uncomfortably.

Caroline’s expression hardened.

“You’re trying to manipulate the audience.””

“No.””

Nathan pointed toward Lily.

“I’m reminding you that she’s a child.””

The room went quiet.

For the first time that night, Caroline looked uncertain.

Then Lily spoke.

“Daddy?””

Nathan turned immediately.

“I’m here.””

“Mommy said bad people take things away.””

His eyes filled.

“She was right.””

Lily looked at him.

“But you came.””

Nathan swallowed.

“Yes.””

A tiny smile appeared on her face.

“I knew you would.””

Those four words affected Caroline more than Nathan expected.

Because even someone as determined as Caroline couldn’t ignore the innocence of a child.

She slowly lowered her hand.

“Bring her.””

One of her men released Lily.

Nathan moved quickly.

He dropped to his knees and pulled his daughter into his arms.

Lily held onto him tightly.

The feeling was overwhelming.

He had imagined this moment thousands of times since discovering she existed.

But none of those dreams prepared him for how fragile she felt.

How small.

How much she needed him.

“I’m sorry,” he whispered.

Lily rested her head against his shoulder.

“For what?””

Nathan closed his eyes.

“For not finding you sooner.””

The cameras captured every second.

The billionaire heir.

The daughter he never knew.

The family secret unfolding before the world.

But Nathan no longer cared.

Then Caroline spoke.

“Now you understand.””

Nathan looked up.

“What?””

“Why Richard was afraid.””

Nathan held Lily closer.

“Because of the company?””

Caroline shook her head.

“No.””

She looked at the screen.

“Because of you.””

Nathan frowned.

“Me?””

Caroline nodded.

“You were never supposed to inherit the Cole empire.””

The warehouse went silent.

“What are you talking about?””

Caroline walked toward the screen.

“The truth is that Richard Cole knew exactly who you were.””

She changed the image.

A photograph appeared.

A young man.

Nathan recognized him immediately.

Thomas Bennett.

But beside him was another person.

A woman.

His mother.

And a child.

A baby.

Him.

Nathan stared.

“My mother knew.””

“Yes.””

Caroline looked at him.

“She knew the truth from the beginning.””

Nathan shook his head.

“No.””

His voice became weaker.

“She loved Richard.””

Caroline laughed sadly.

“She respected him.””

A pause.

“But love?””

She shook her head.

“Your mother loved Thomas Bennett.””

Nathan felt like the ground disappeared.

He looked at Grace.

She looked devastated.

“I didn’t know this part,” she whispered.

Nathan looked back at the screen.

The photograph showed a family that had existed before his memories began.

A family someone had destroyed.

“Why did Richard raise me?””

Caroline answered immediately.

“Because he needed an heir.””

The words were brutal.

“He needed a child carrying the Bennett bloodline to legitimize his control over what Thomas built.””

Nathan’s jaw tightened.

“So I was just a tool?””

“No.””

A voice came from the back of the warehouse.

Everyone turned.

Eleanor Cole entered.

Security moved aside.

Nathan stared.

“Grandmother?””

She looked at the screen.

Then at him.

“I should have told you years ago.””

Nathan’s anger returned.

“You all keep saying that.””

His voice shook.

“But nobody ever does.””

Eleanor accepted the anger.

“You’re right.””

She stepped closer.

“Richard was wrong.””

The entire warehouse became still.

Because Eleanor had never publicly admitted Richard’s mistakes.

Not once.

“He was my son.””

Her eyes filled.

“But he became obsessed with power.””

Nathan looked at her.

“Then why protect him?””

Eleanor looked down.

“Because I was a coward.””

The admission surprised everyone.

“I told myself I was protecting the family.””

She looked at Lily.

“But I was protecting a name.””

Nathan was silent.

Eleanor continued.

“Your mother tried to leave with you.””

Nathan’s expression changed.

“What?””

“Richard stopped her.””

“How?””

Eleanor looked away.

“He threatened Thomas.””

Nathan felt anger rising.

“What happened to Thomas?””

Nobody answered.

Then Grace spoke.

“Richard didn’t kill him.””

Everyone looked at her.

“He was arrested.””

Nathan frowned.

“For what?””

Grace’s eyes filled with pain.

“Crimes he didn’t commit.””

Nathan understood.

Richard didn’t need to kill Thomas.

He destroyed him.

The same way he destroyed everyone else.

Caroline stepped forward.

“This is why I brought everything public.””

She looked at the cameras.

“The world deserves to know.””

Nathan looked at the documents.

For years, his family had built a powerful image.

Now that image was collapsing.

But then something bothered him.

Something didn’t make sense.

“If you wanted the truth revealed…”

Nathan looked at Caroline.

“Why take Lily?””

Caroline went silent.

That hesitation told him everything.

“You weren’t planning to expose the truth.””

Her face changed.

Nathan continued.

“You wanted something else.””

Caroline looked away.

“What?””

Nathan stepped closer.

“You wanted access.””

The room became tense.

“To what?””

Nathan’s eyes moved to the documents.

Then to the birth record.

Then to Lily.

“You didn’t need my daughter.””

His voice became colder.

“You needed me to activate something.””

Caroline’s expression changed.

Because he was right.

Daniel, who had been watching from the side, suddenly spoke.

“Mr. Cole.””

Nathan turned.

The lawyer held a document.

“I think I found it.””

“What?””

Daniel looked at Caroline.

“Thomas Bennett didn’t just leave behind a company.””

He looked at Nathan.

“He left behind a trust.””

Caroline’s face changed.

Nathan noticed.

A hidden reaction.

Fear.

“What trust?””

Daniel opened the document.

“A legal agreement created twenty-eight years ago.””

He looked at Lily.

“And the beneficiary is not Nathan.””

Silence.

Nathan stared.

“Then who?””

Daniel looked at the paper.

“The Bennett bloodline.””

A pause.

“More specifically…”

Everyone waited.

“Lily Miller.””

The room exploded with whispers.

Nathan looked at his daughter.

His four-year-old daughter had just become the person who controlled the fate of two empires.

Caroline’s entire plan suddenly made sense.

She didn’t kidnap Lily because she wanted revenge.

She kidnapped Lily because Lily was the key.

But then Nathan noticed something else.

Caroline wasn’t looking at Lily.

She was looking at the documents.

Desperation filled her eyes.

Because she knew something Nathan didn’t.

Something worse.

“What happens if Lily inherits this trust?”” Nathan asked.

Daniel looked at the final page.

His expression changed.

“Mr. Cole…”

Nathan stepped closer.

“What?””

Daniel swallowed.

“The trust doesn’t just transfer ownership.””

He looked at the cameras.

“At a certain condition, it has the power to dissolve the entire Cole Corporation.””

Everyone went silent.

Nathan looked at Caroline.

Then at Lily.

And suddenly, he understood.

The fight was never about money.

It was about control.

The Cole empire.

The Bennett legacy.

Everything was connected to a little girl who didn’t even understand why adults were fighting over her.

Then a gunshot exploded outside the warehouse.

Everyone screamed.

The lights went out.

When they came back on, Lily was gone.

Again.

Nathan’s heart stopped.

But this time, something was different.

Because beside the empty chair where his daughter had been sitting was a message.

Not from Caroline.

Not from Victoria.

Not from anyone he expected.

Three words written in black ink:

*YOUR MOTHER LIED.*

Nathan stared at the message.

May you like

And for the first time, he realized the truth he had been chasing might not be about the people who betrayed him.

It might be about the person he trusted most.
