Chapter 3: The Letter That Exposed the Cole Empire’s Darkest Secret

Nathan read the letter three times.

Each time, he expected the words to change.

He expected some hidden explanation to appear.

Some logical reason that would make everything make sense.

But the ink remained the same.

The handwriting remained the same.

And his father’s confession remained impossible to ignore.

*I did what I believed was necessary.*

Nathan stared at that sentence until his vision blurred.

Necessary.

That was the word Richard Cole had always used whenever he made decisions nobody understood.

When he fired hundreds of employees during a company restructure.

Necessary.

When he ended partnerships that others thought were profitable.

Necessary.

When he pushed Nathan away from certain people in his life.

Necessary.

Nathan had spent years believing his father was simply a difficult man.

A ruthless businessman.

Someone who cared more about success than emotions.

But this was different.

This wasn’t business.

This was his life.

His daughter.

The woman he loved.

Five years stolen from him.

Daniel Reeves watched silently from across the table.

The lawyer had worked for the Cole family for nearly twenty years.

He had seen Richard Cole negotiate billion-dollar deals without changing his expression.

He had seen him destroy competitors with carefully planned strategies.

But he had never seen Nathan look like this.

“Read the rest,” Daniel said quietly.

Nathan didn’t move.

“Did you know?””

Daniel looked down.

“Not everything.””

“That’s not an answer.””

The lawyer sighed.

“I knew your father was involved with something concerning Grace.””

Nathan’s eyes sharpened.

“You knew?””

“I knew he wanted her gone.””

The words filled the room.

Nathan slowly placed the letter on the table.

“You knew my father forced the mother of my child to disappear, and you said nothing?””

Daniel didn’t defend himself.

“I was wrong.””

Nathan laughed bitterly.

“Wrong?””

His voice rose.

“My entire life was destroyed because people around me decided I couldn’t handle the truth.””

Daniel lowered his head.

“You’re right.””

The simple admission surprised Nathan.

Because he expected excuses.

He expected someone to protect Richard’s memory.

Instead, Daniel looked tired.

Like he had been carrying a burden for years.

“Why now?”” Nathan asked.

“Why did you give me this now?””

Daniel hesitated.

“Because I found something else.””

Nathan looked at him.

“What?””

Daniel opened a folder.

Inside were old documents.

Medical records.

Financial reports.

Private investigation files.

Nathan’s stomach tightened.

“What am I looking at?””

“Your father wasn’t only investigating Grace.””

Daniel pushed one document forward.

“He was investigating Lily.””

Nathan felt anger rise.

“She was a child.””

“I know.””

“Why would he investigate his own granddaughter?””

Daniel looked at him.

“Because your father discovered something before Lily was born.””

Nathan picked up the document.

The first page contained a photograph.

A woman.

A woman he didn’t recognize.

Below it was a name.

*Evelyn Cole.*

Nathan frowned.

“Who is this?””

Daniel’s expression changed.

“That’s your father’s first wife.””

Nathan froze.

“My father was married before my mother?””

“Yes.””

The information felt unreal.

Nathan had spent his entire life hearing stories about Richard and his mother.

Their perfect marriage.

Their perfect family.

No one had ever mentioned another woman.

“What happened to her?””

Daniel looked away.

“She disappeared.””

A cold feeling moved through Nathan.

“Disappeared?””

“Twenty-eight years ago.””

Nathan studied the photograph.

The woman had familiar features.

The same sharp eyes as Richard.

The same serious expression.

“Why was she hidden?””

Daniel took a breath.

“Because Evelyn Cole knew a secret about the family.””

Nathan looked up.

“What secret?””

Before Daniel could answer, the door opened.

A security officer entered.

“Mr. Cole.””

Nathan turned.

“What?””

The officer looked uncomfortable.

“There’s someone downstairs asking to see you.””

“Who?””

The officer handed him a card.

Nathan read the name.

His face changed.

*Grace Miller.*

“What is she doing here?””

The officer hesitated.

“She said she needs to tell you something before someone else does.””

Nathan immediately stood.

“Bring her up.””

A few minutes later, Grace entered the archive room.

She looked exhausted.

The doctor had treated her shoulder, but the pain was still visible in every movement.

Nathan immediately moved toward her.

“You shouldn’t be walking around.””

Grace looked at him.

“I needed to come.””

Her eyes moved to the documents on the table.

She saw Evelyn’s photograph.

And all color disappeared from her face.

“You found her.””

Nathan noticed.

“You know her?””

Grace didn’t answer.

That was enough.

“Grace.””

She closed her eyes.

“I was hoping you would never learn this way.””

Nathan’s patience broke.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

His voice was filled with frustration.

“My father knew about Lily. Victoria knew about Lily. You know about this woman.””

He pointed at the photograph.

“And I know nothing.””

Grace looked hurt.

“I wanted to protect you.””

“No.””

Nathan stepped back.

“You wanted to protect Lily.””

Grace went silent.

Because he was right.

“That doesn’t mean I didn’t love you.””

The words stopped him.

For a moment, the anger disappeared.

Because he knew.

He knew Grace had loved him.

That was the worst part.

If she had hated him, this would have been easier.

But she had loved him enough to sacrifice everything.

“Tell me the truth,” Nathan said.

Grace looked at Evelyn’s photograph.

“Your father wasn’t afraid of me.””

“Then what was he afraid of?””

She swallowed.

“The truth about your family.””

Nathan waited.

Grace walked toward the table.

“Evelyn Cole was the first person who tried to expose what Richard had done.””

“What did he do?””

Grace’s voice became quieter.

“Your father built the Cole empire using more than business.””

Daniel looked at her.

“You know about the financial records?””

Grace nodded.

“I know enough.””

Nathan felt a chill.

“Enough to what?””

“To know Richard Cole destroyed people who threatened him.””

The room became silent.

Grace continued.

“Five years ago, when I found out I was pregnant, I wanted to tell you immediately.””

Nathan looked at her.

“Then why didn’t you?””

“Because your father came to me.””

Nathan’s jaw tightened.

“What did he say?””

Grace looked down.

“He told me if I contacted you, he would take Lily away.””

Nathan’s hands curled into fists.

“He couldn’t do that.””

Grace gave a sad smile.

“You think money can’t break people.””

She touched the edge of the table.

“You’re wrong.””

Her voice cracked.

“Your father had lawyers ready. He had investigators following me. He had people watching everywhere I went.””

Nathan felt sick.

“Why?””

Grace looked directly at him.

“Because Lily wasn’t just your daughter.””

Nathan frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Grace hesitated.

“She was proof.””

“Proof of what?””

Before Grace could answer, the lights suddenly went out.

The entire building fell into darkness.

Nathan immediately moved.

“Stay behind me.””

Emergency lights flickered on moments later.

Daniel checked his phone.

“That’s impossible.””

“What?””

“The archive system went offline.””

Nathan looked toward the security cameras.

“Can you restore it?””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

Then Nathan noticed something.

The envelope.

His father’s letter.

It was gone.

Someone had entered the room during the blackout.

Someone had taken the one piece of evidence that could explain everything.

Nathan walked to the doorway.

The hallway was empty.

But on the floor outside the archive room was something that hadn’t been there before.

A small white envelope.

No name.

No address.

Only one sentence written across the front.

*Ask your mother why she lied about your birth.*

Nathan stared at the message.

His heart stopped.

Because his mother had been dead for ten years.

And yet somehow…

Someone was telling him she had been part of the secret too.

Grace looked over his shoulder.

The moment she read the words, fear returned to her eyes.

“Nathan…”

He turned.

“What?””

Grace whispered:

“There’s something I never told you.””

Nathan felt a terrible certainty settle over him.

“What?””

Grace looked toward the dark hallway.

“The reason your father was so desperate to hide Lily…”

She paused.

“…is because Lily’s existence proves the Cole family has been lying for decades.””

Nathan looked down at the envelope.

For the first time in his life, he questioned not only his father.

Not only his family.

But his entire identity.

May you like

And somewhere inside the massive empire built by the Cole name, a secret had just awakened.

A secret powerful enough to destroy everything.
