Chapter 5: The Room Beneath the Mansion

The key felt heavier than it should have.

Nathan had held billion-dollar contracts in his hands.

He had signed documents that changed the future of entire companies.

He had made decisions that affected thousands of employees.

But somehow, a small piece of metal resting against his palm felt more powerful than all of those things combined.

Because this key did not open a door.

It opened a secret.

A secret his family had spent decades protecting.

Eleanor Cole watched him carefully from across the library.

For the first time Nathan could remember, his grandmother looked afraid.

Not worried.

Not concerned.

Afraid.

And that terrified him.

“Where is the room?”” Nathan asked.

Eleanor looked toward the old fireplace.

“Beneath the east wing.””

Nathan frowned.

“The east wing was demolished during the renovation.””

A faint smile appeared on her face.

“That’s what everyone was supposed to believe.””

Nathan stared at her.

“You built a hidden room under the house?””

“No.””

Her voice was quiet.

“Richard did.””

That name again.

Everything always came back to his father.

The man Nathan spent his life admiring.

The man who apparently spent his life hiding things from him.

“Why would Richard build a secret room?””

Eleanor looked down.

“Because he knew there would come a day when someone would come searching.””

Nathan’s eyes narrowed.

“Someone like me?””

“Yes.””

The answer was immediate.

He felt a chill.

“He knew I would find out?””

“He knew you would ask questions eventually.””

Eleanor stood slowly.

Her age showed in her movements, but her eyes remained sharp.

“Your father was brilliant, Nathan.””

The compliment sounded almost painful.

“He could predict people better than anyone I knew.””

She walked toward the hidden panel beside the fireplace.

“But he made one mistake.””

“What mistake?””

Eleanor pressed her hand against the wall.

“He underestimated the people he hurt.””

A section of the wooden panel clicked.

Nathan stepped closer.

Behind the fireplace was a narrow passage.

Dark.

Silent.

Waiting.

He stared into it.

His entire childhood had been spent in this mansion.

He had walked these halls thousands of times.

And yet, this place had existed beneath his feet without him knowing.

“How long has this been here?””

“Longer than the Cole name.””

Nathan looked at her.

“What does that mean?””

Eleanor didn’t answer.

She simply handed him a flashlight.

“Go inside.””

Nathan looked back.

Grace stood near the doorway.

She had followed him from the archive room.

He hadn’t noticed.

Her expression told him she was afraid of what he might find.

“You don’t have to do this alone,” she whispered.

Nathan looked at her.

Five years ago, he would have reached for her hand without thinking.

Tonight, he wanted to.

But too much had happened.

Too many secrets stood between them.

Still, seeing Grace there reminded him of something important.

She was the only person who had suffered because of these secrets.

Not gained from them.

Not used them.

Suffered.

Nathan nodded.

“Stay with me.””

Grace stepped forward.

“I’m not going anywhere.””

Together, they entered the hidden passage.

The door closed behind them.

The sound echoed through the darkness.

For several minutes, they walked in silence.

The walls were old.

Older than the mansion itself.

Dust covered the stone floor.

But there were signs someone had used the passage recently.

Fresh footprints.

Nathan noticed immediately.

“Someone has been here.””

Grace stopped.

“So Richard’s secret wasn’t forgotten.””

Nathan looked ahead.

“No.””

His voice hardened.

“Someone is still protecting it.””

The passage ended at a steel door.

No handle.

No lock.

Only a small keyhole.

Nathan inserted the key.

It fit perfectly.

The door opened with a heavy sound.

Inside was a room filled with boxes.

Hundreds of them.

Documents.

Photographs.

Old records.

A lifetime of secrets.

Nathan stepped inside.

A single desk sat in the center.

On top of it was a folder.

His name was written on the cover.

Nathan Cole.

He didn’t touch it immediately.

Something about it felt personal.

Like Richard had prepared this moment.

Like he knew Nathan would eventually stand there.

Finally, he opened it.

The first page was a birth certificate.

Nathan’s eyes moved across the document.

Then stopped.

His hands went cold.

Because the name listed under “father” was not Richard Cole.

It was someone else.

A man named Thomas Bennett.

Grace covered her mouth.

Nathan looked at her.

“You knew.””

She shook her head.

“Not his name.””

“But you knew there was someone else.””

“I knew your father wasn’t Richard.””

Nathan looked back at the document.

Thomas Bennett.

A stranger.

A man whose blood ran through his veins.

A man he had never met.

“Who was he?””

Before Grace could answer, a sound came from behind them.

A door closing.

Nathan turned.

The passage entrance was shut.

They were locked inside.

Grace moved closer.

“Nathan.””

He grabbed his phone.

No signal.

Of course.

Someone had planned this.

Someone knew they were here.

Then a speaker hidden in the ceiling crackled.

A voice filled the room.

“Nathan.””

He froze.

Because he knew that voice.

Victoria.

“Get out of my way.””

His anger rose instantly.

“Victoria?””

Her voice remained calm.

“You should have listened to me.””

Nathan walked toward the speaker.

“You broke into my family’s archive?””

“No.””

A pause.

“I protected you from what you were about to discover.””

Nathan laughed coldly.

“You attacked Grace.””

“I was trying to stop her from destroying you.””

“You don’t even know what you’re talking about.””

Victoria’s tone changed.

“You still believe she’s innocent?””

Nathan looked at Grace.

The woman who had raised his daughter alone.

The woman who took a blow meant for Lily.

“What are you saying?””

Victoria was silent for a moment.

Then:

“Ask her about Thomas Bennett.””

Grace’s face changed.

Nathan noticed.

“Grace?””

She looked away.

And that hurt more than anything.

“Who is Thomas Bennett?””

Grace didn’t answer.

Nathan’s voice became sharper.

“Grace.””

She closed her eyes.

“Your real father.””

The room became silent.

Nathan felt like the air disappeared.

He knew the name.

He had seen the document.

But hearing Grace say it made it real.

“Who was he?””

Grace’s eyes filled with tears.

“He was my father.””

Nathan froze.

“What?””

Grace looked at him.

“Thomas Bennett was my father.””

Everything stopped.

The hidden room.

The documents.

The lies.

All of it suddenly connected.

Nathan took a step back.

“No.””

Grace whispered:

“I didn’t know at first.””

“You knew your father and I shared the same secret?””

“No.””

Her voice broke.

“I found out after I disappeared.””

Nathan stared at her.

“Explain.””

Grace walked toward him.

“Thomas Bennett was the man Richard destroyed.””

Nathan remembered Eleanor’s words.

The Cole empire was built on a stolen name.

“Your father and mine…”

Grace nodded.

“They were enemies.””

“Why?””

“Because Thomas knew the truth about Richard.””

Nathan looked at the documents scattered across the room.

“What truth?””

Grace swallowed.

“That Richard Cole didn’t build this empire alone.””

The speaker crackled again.

Victoria’s voice returned.

“And now you understand.””

Nathan looked upward.

“Why are you doing this?””

A pause.

Then Victoria answered:

“Because I was supposed to inherit everything.””

Nathan felt disgust.

“There it is.””

But Victoria continued.

“You don’t understand.””

Her voice became emotional for the first time.

“Your father promised my family that the Cole empire would belong to us.””

Nathan frowned.

“What?””

“Richard needed our family’s money and influence years ago. In exchange, he promised that I would marry you and our families would merge.””

Nathan stared.

“So this was never about love.””

Silence.

Then Victoria said:

“No.””

The honesty shocked him.

“It was about power.””

Grace looked at Nathan.

“You were never allowed to choose.””

Nathan felt anger burning through him.

His entire engagement.

His future.

His company.

All planned by people who saw him as a piece on a chessboard.

Then another sound came.

The steel door unlocked.

Everyone froze.

The door slowly opened.

But it wasn’t Victoria standing there.

It was Eleanor.

She looked at Nathan with tears in her eyes.

“I’m sorry.””

Nathan stared at her.

“For what?””

The old woman looked at the documents.

“For waiting too long.””

She stepped inside.

“There’s something you need to know before you read the rest of that file.””

Nathan waited.

Eleanor whispered:

“Thomas Bennett didn’t just know Richard’s secret.””

She looked at Grace.

“He died trying to expose it.””

Nathan felt his heart sink.

“And Richard killed him?””

Eleanor’s expression became painful.

“No.””

A pause.

“Richard didn’t kill him.””

Nathan waited.

“Then who did?””

Eleanor looked toward the hallway.

Her answer was barely audible.

“The person who has been protecting the Cole empire all these years.””

Nathan followed her gaze.

And suddenly, the greatest secret in his family was no longer about his father.

It was about someone still alive.

Someone close.

May you like

Someone who had been watching him his entire life.

And that person was about to make sure Nathan never discovered the rest of the truth.
