Chapter 4: The Daughter They Tried to Erase

Nathan had spent his entire life believing he knew exactly who he was.

Nathan Cole.

Son of Richard Cole.

Heir to the Cole Corporation.

A man born into wealth, raised among powerful people, and prepared from childhood to inherit one of the largest business empires in the country.

His identity had never been a question.

Until tonight.

Now, standing inside the dark archive room with a mysterious message accusing his dead mother of lying about his birth, Nathan felt as if the foundation beneath his feet had cracked.

Everything he trusted had become uncertain.

His father.

His family.

His past.

Even himself.

He looked at Grace.

“What do you know?””

Grace didn’t answer immediately.

That scared him more than anything.

Because Grace had always been honest with him.

Even when the truth hurt.

Even when it destroyed the life they had dreamed about.

“Grace.””

She looked at him.

“I need you to understand something.””

Nathan’s expression hardened.

“I’m done understanding everyone except myself.””

The words hurt her.

He saw it.

But he didn’t take them back.

For five years, Grace had carried a truth that belonged to both of them.

For five years, she had watched Lily grow up without her father.

And now Nathan was finally seeing the cost of that silence.

Grace took a slow breath.

“When I met your father five years ago, I thought he was trying to protect the Cole family reputation.””

Nathan waited.

“But I was wrong.””

She looked at the envelope on the table.

“He wasn’t protecting the family.””

Her voice lowered.

“He was protecting a secret.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“What secret?””

Grace looked at him.

“The same secret Evelyn Cole tried to expose.””

Nathan’s eyes narrowed.

“Evelyn.””

The name felt strange.

A woman he had never known.

A woman erased from his family history.

“What happened to her?””

Grace hesitated.

“She disappeared after trying to reveal information about Richard.””

“Did she die?””

“No one knows.””

Nathan stared at her.

“No one knows?””

Grace shook her head.

“Your father told everyone she left voluntarily.””

“But you don’t believe that.””

“No.””

Her voice became quiet.

“Because I found her.””

Nathan froze.

“When?””

“Before Lily was born.””

The room went silent.

“You found a woman my family erased from history, and you never told me?””

Grace looked down.

“I didn’t know who I could trust.””

Nathan wanted to argue.

He wanted to tell her she should have trusted him.

But deep down, he knew the truth.

If Richard Cole had the power to erase a person from the world, then Grace’s fear had been justified.

“What did Evelyn tell you?””

Grace’s eyes moved to Lily’s picture on Nathan’s phone.

A photo he had taken earlier.

His daughter smiling with her teddy bear.

“She told me Lily was the only person who could expose Richard.””

Nathan felt his chest tighten.

“My daughter?””

Grace nodded.

“She didn’t mean Lily knew something.””

“Then what?””

“Your daughter’s existence.””

Nathan frowned.

“I don’t understand.””

Grace walked toward the window overlooking the city.

“Richard Cole spent decades building an image.””

She looked at the thousands of lights outside.

“The perfect businessman.””

“The perfect father.””

“The perfect family.””

Nathan remained silent.

“But behind that image were agreements, hidden partnerships, and things your family buried.””

Daniel looked through the documents.

“Financial crimes?””

Grace shook her head.

“Something worse.””

Nathan’s patience disappeared.

“Grace, stop protecting me.””

She turned.

“I’m not.””

“Then tell me.””

A long pause.

Then she said:

“Your father wasn’t your biological father.””

The sentence was so quiet that Nathan almost didn’t hear it.

But when he did, the world stopped.

“What?””

Daniel looked shocked.

Nathan stared at Grace.

“No.””

Grace’s eyes filled with sadness.

“Nathan…”

“No.””

He stepped back.

“My father was Richard Cole.””

Grace said nothing.

And that silence destroyed him.

“You’re saying Richard wasn’t my father?””

“I’m saying he wasn’t the man who gave you life.””

Nathan laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because his mind couldn’t process it.

For years, he had tried to become Richard Cole’s son.

He had copied his habits.

Studied his business strategies.

Chased his approval.

And now someone was telling him that man wasn’t even his father.

“Who was?””

Grace looked away.

“I don’t know.””

Nathan’s anger exploded.

“You don’t know?””

“I only know what Evelyn told me.””

“Which was?””

Grace swallowed.

“That your mother was forced into a marriage with Richard after she became pregnant.””

Nathan went still.

His mother.

The woman he remembered as gentle and loving.

The woman who always told him he was special.

“She never told me.””

“Because she was afraid.””

“Of Richard?””

Grace nodded.

Nathan walked away.

The room felt too small.

His entire childhood was suddenly filled with questions.

Why had his mother always seemed distant around his father?

Why had Richard controlled every aspect of their family?

Why had his mother cried the night before she died?

Nathan remembered something he hadn’t thought about in years.

He was twelve years old.

Standing outside his parents’ bedroom.

He had heard his mother crying.

Richard’s voice had been cold.

“You promised you would never tell him.””

His mother had replied:

“He deserves to know who he really is.””

At the time, Nathan thought they were arguing about business.

Now he knew.

They were talking about him.

A knock interrupted the silence.

Everyone turned.

The security officer entered again.

“Mr. Cole.””

Nathan looked up.

“What?””

“We found the person who entered the archive room.””

Nathan immediately stepped forward.

“Who?””

The officer hesitated.

“It was someone with access.””

Daniel’s face changed.

“Access to the private archive?””

“Yes.””

Nathan’s voice became cold.

“Name.””

The officer looked down.

“Mrs. Eleanor Cole.””

Nathan froze.

His grandmother.

Richard’s mother.

The woman who had been living quietly in the Cole estate for years.

“She’s alive?”” Daniel asked.

“Yes.””

Nathan felt a strange feeling.

His grandmother had always been presented as a fragile elderly woman.

Someone who spent her days gardening and reading.

But now she had entered a secured archive.

And stolen his father’s letter.

“Where is she?””

The officer looked uncomfortable.

“She requested to speak with you.””

Nathan almost smiled.

Of course she did.

Everyone had something to say now.

Everyone except the people who should have told him years ago.

“Take me to her.””

The old woman was waiting in the mansion’s private library.

When Nathan entered, Eleanor Cole was sitting beside the fireplace.

She looked exactly as he remembered.

Silver hair.

Elegant clothing.

A calm expression.

But tonight, Nathan saw something different.

Not weakness.

Control.

“Grandmother.””

She looked at him.

“You finally found the truth.””

Nathan stopped.

“You knew.””

Eleanor didn’t deny it.

“Yes.””

His hands tightened.

“How long?””

“Since the day you were born.””

The answer was devastating.

Nathan stared at the woman who had held him as a child.

Who had kissed his forehead.

Who had told him the Cole family was his greatest gift.

“You knew Richard wasn’t my father?””

“Yes.””

“And you let me believe it?””

Her eyes became sad.

“I let you survive.””

Nathan shook his head.

“No.””

His voice broke.

“You let me live a lie.””

Eleanor looked toward the fire.

“Sometimes lies are the only walls protecting people from monsters.””

Nathan stepped closer.

“Was Richard the monster?””

The old woman didn’t answer.

And that was answer enough.

“Tell me everything.””

Eleanor looked at him.

“Your father’s greatest fear was not losing his company.””

She reached into her pocket and placed a small key on the table.

“It was that one day you would discover who your real father was.””

Nathan looked at the key.

“What does it open?””

Eleanor whispered:

“A room Richard never wanted you to find.””

Nathan picked it up.

“And what’s inside?””

Her expression changed.

Fear appeared.

Real fear.

“Proof.””

“Proof of what?””

Eleanor looked directly into his eyes.

“That the Cole empire was built on a stolen name.””

Nathan stared at the key.

Then at his grandmother.

Then at the life he thought he understood.

Five years ago, someone stole his daughter from him.

Now he was discovering someone had stolen something even bigger.

His entire identity.

And somewhere hidden inside the Cole mansion was the truth about the man who gave him his blood.

The man Richard Cole had spent decades trying to erase.
