Chapter 9: The Wedding Was Only the Beginning

The next morning, I made a decision.

I was done being surprised.

For years, people had made choices about my life without asking me.

My husband left.

My family judged me.

Vanessa manipulated me.

Everyone thought I would just accept it.

Smile.

Stay quiet.

Forgive.

Not anymore.

I took Lily to school.

Then I drove straight to Graham Ellison’s office.

I expected security to stop me.

Instead, his assistant immediately recognized me.

“Ms. Bennett?””

I frowned.

“You know who I am?””

She looked uncomfortable.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

She hesitated.

“Mr. Ellison asked me to let you in if you came.””

That surprised me.

Graham was waiting inside.

He looked exhausted.

Like he hadn’t slept.

“Claire.””

I closed the door.

“I need the truth.””

He nodded.

“I know.””

“You knew about the trust.””

His face changed.

A small reaction.

But I saw it.

“How?””

“Because Vanessa told you.””

He looked away.

That was enough.

I stepped closer.

“You used me.””

“No.””

“You married my sister because of something connected to my father.””

“I didn’t know at first.””

“Then when did you know?””

Silence.

“Graham.””

He sighed.

“After I started dating Vanessa.””

I laughed.

Bitterly.

“You mean after you were already involved?””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t you leave?””

His answer surprised me.

“Because I was trying to fix my father’s mistakes.””

I stared at him.

“Your father.””

He nodded.

“Richard Ellison ruined your family.””

The words were painful because I already knew.

But hearing them made them real.

“My father spent years trying to expose him,” Graham continued.

“And I spent years trying to find proof.””

“Then why marry Vanessa?””

His expression broke.

“Because Vanessa had the proof.””

I froze.

“What?””

“She had documents from years ago.””

“The same documents my father hid?””

“Yes.””

My mind raced.

“But she needed access to the trust.””

Graham nodded.

“That’s why she targeted me.””

I looked at him.

“And you targeted her.””

He didn’t deny it.

“I thought I could get the evidence and end this.””

“And instead?””

He looked down.

“Instead, I started caring about her.””

I almost couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

“After everything?””

“Yes.””

That was complicated.

And I hated that.

Because I wanted everyone to be simple.

Good or bad.

Victim or villain.

But life wasn’t that kind.

“What happened last night?””

Graham looked at me.

“Vanessa disappeared.””

My stomach tightened.

“What?””

“She didn’t go home.””

“Where is she?””

“I don’t know.””

Then he handed me an envelope.

“This was left at my office.””

I opened it.

Inside was a handwritten note.

Claire,

You wanted the truth.

Now you’ll get it.

But you’re going to hate me for it.

My hands shook.

Because I knew that handwriting.

Vanessa.

There was one more page.

Only one sentence.

The reason Dad protected you wasn’t because you were his favorite.

It was because you were the only one who wasn’t his daughter.

I stopped breathing.

The room spun.

I read it again.

And again.

Only one thought filled my mind.

No.

Impossible.

My sister’s words couldn’t be true.

But deep down…

I knew.

The secrets were never just about money.

They were never just about fraud.

They were never just about a wedding.

May you like

They were about me.

And the truth of who I really was.
