Chapter 6: The Sister Who Wanted My Silence
I didn’t open the door.
Not immediately.
The person outside knocked again.
This time harder.
“Claire.””
My sister’s voice.
Of course.
Vanessa.
The woman who had smiled while destroying me.
The woman who had watched my daughter expose her secret.
The woman who somehow knew about a box my father had hidden before he died.
Lily looked terrified.
I moved in front of her.
“Go upstairs.””
“But Mom—”
“Now, Lily.””
She hesitated.
Then she ran.
I waited until I heard her bedroom door close.
Only then did I open the door.
Vanessa stood on my porch.
She looked nothing like the bride from yesterday.
Her makeup was gone.
Her hair was messy.
Her expensive dress had been replaced with jeans and a sweater.
For the first time, she looked ordinary.
Almost human.
But I knew better now.
“Where is it?””
No apology.
No explanation.
No pretending.
Just a question.
I stared at her.
“Hello would be nice.””
“Claire.””
Her voice was sharp.
“Where is Dad’s box?””
The fact that she said it so easily confirmed everything.
“You knew about it.””
Her expression changed.
Only slightly.
But enough.
“I need what’s inside.””
“You mean you want it.””
She stepped closer.
“You have no idea what you’re dealing with.””
I almost smiled.
“Funny. That’s exactly what everyone says when they don’t want to tell me the truth.””
Vanessa looked away.
“Give it to me.””
“No.””
Her eyes snapped back.
“You don’t understand.””
“Then explain.””
She was silent.
For the first time, my sister had no perfect answer.
No clever insult.
No performance.
Just fear.
“You think Graham was the problem,” she said.
I said nothing.
“He wasn’t.””
That surprised me.
“Then what was?””
Vanessa swallowed.
“Dad.””
The word felt like a betrayal.
“Our father?””
“Yes.””
I shook my head.
“You’re blaming Dad?””
“I’m telling you he lied.””
I laughed bitterly.
“My father was the one person in this family who protected me.””
“No.””
Vanessa’s voice cracked.
“He protected you because he felt guilty.””
I froze.
“What does that mean?””
She stepped closer.
“Ask Mom.””
I hated that answer.
Because it meant there was another secret.
Another piece missing.
“What did Dad do?””
Vanessa looked at the house.
Then at me.
“Something that changed both our lives.””
“And you planned to marry Graham because of it?””
Her face hardened.
“You don’t know anything about Graham.””
“I know enough.””
“No, Claire.””
She shook her head.
“You know the version everyone showed you.””
I wanted to hate her.
I tried.
But there was something in her expression.
Pain.
Real pain.
And that confused me more than anything.
“Why did you involve Lily?””
That question changed her.
For a moment, Vanessa looked ashamed.
“I didn’t.””
“You talked to my daughter.””
“I didn’t know she would do that.””
“You told an eight-year-old to keep secrets from her mother.””
Vanessa looked down.
And I saw it.
Regret.
But it was too late.
“You were always Dad’s favorite.””
I stared at her.
“What?””
“You.””
Her voice became quieter.
“Everyone thought I had everything. The looks. The confidence. The attention.””
She laughed softly.
“But Dad always looked at you like you were the one who mattered.””
“That’s what this is about?””
“No.””
She looked at me.
“It’s about what he left you.””
I tightened my grip on the box behind me.
“You’re not getting it.””
Vanessa’s face changed.
The fear disappeared.
Something colder replaced it.
“Then you’re making a mistake.””
A chill moved through me.
“What does that mean?””
She stepped backward.
“It means you should open the box before someone else does.””
Then she walked away.
I watched her leave.
And I knew one thing.
Whatever my father had hidden…
It was bigger than money.
Bigger than a wedding.
Bigger than my sister’s jealousy.
Because Vanessa wasn’t trying to destroy me.
She was trying to reach something.
May you like
Something my father had spent years protecting.
And now it belonged to me. :::
