Chapter 14: The Person Behind the Betrayal

I couldn’t stop thinking about one sentence.

She was never working alone.

For days, I believed Vanessa was the enemy.

I believed she was the person behind every lie.

The person who manipulated Graham.

The person who betrayed my father.

The person who tried to use Lily.

But now Richard had introduced a new possibility.

Vanessa wasn’t the mastermind.

She was part of something bigger.

And somehow, that frightened me more.

“Who was helping her?”” I asked.

Richard looked toward the house.

“I think you already know.””

My stomach tightened.

“No.””

“Claire.””

“Don’t.””

Because I knew.

There was only one person left.

One person who had protected Vanessa her entire life.

One person who always made excuses.

My mother.

I turned around.

She was standing in the doorway.

And her expression told me everything.

Not guilt.

Not surprise.

Resignation.

Like she knew this day would come.

“Mom?””

She closed her eyes.

“I’m sorry.””

That was all she said.

And somehow, those two words hurt more than any confession.

I walked back inside.

Richard followed.

My mother sat at the kitchen table.

The same table where she had watched me grow up.

Where she had hidden the truth.

“How long?””

My voice was quiet.

“Claire…”

“How long did you know?””

She cried silently.

“Since the beginning.””

I felt numb.

“You knew about Emily.””

“Yes.””

“You knew about Richard.””

“Yes.””

“You knew about Vanessa.””

A pause.

“Yes.””

The room became unbearable.

“Why?””

My mother looked at me.

“Because I was afraid.””

“Of what?””

“Of losing my daughters.””

I laughed softly.

“You already did.””

She looked devastated.

But I couldn’t stop.

“Vanessa spent years hurting me.””

“I know.””

“You knew?””

“Yes.””

The answer shocked me.

“You knew she hated me?””

“Yes.””

“And you let it happen?””

My mother covered her face.

“I thought I could fix it.””

“You couldn’t.””

“I know.””

“You chose her.””

Her tears fell.

“I thought she needed me.””

“And what about me?””

My mother looked at me.

“You never needed saving.””

That sentence stayed with me.

Because maybe that was the problem.

Everyone saw Vanessa as fragile.

Everyone saw me as strong.

So they forgot strong people can hurt too.

Then my phone rang.

Graham.

I answered.

“Claire?””

His voice was urgent.

“What happened?””

“Where are you?””

“I found something.””

My heart tightened.

“What?””

“Vanessa.””

I stood.

“What about her?””

“She contacted me.””

“Is she okay?””

A pause.

“No.””

My stomach dropped.

“What happened?””

“She knows Richard is involved.””

“Where is she?””

“I’m sending you the location.””

Twenty minutes later, I arrived at an abandoned office building downtown.

Graham was waiting outside.

“She’s inside.””

“Alone?””

He nodded.

We walked in.

The building was dark.

Dust covered the floors.

Finally, we reached a small room.

Vanessa sat inside.

She looked exhausted.

Not like the woman from the wedding.

Not like the confident sister who always had control.

Just broken.

When she saw me, she looked away.

“You came.””

“Yes.””

“I knew you would.””

I crossed my arms.

“Why?””

“Because you’re not like me.””

The answer surprised me.

“What does that mean?””

She laughed sadly.

“You still believe people can be better.””

I said nothing.

She looked at Graham.

Then back at me.

“I didn’t know everything.””

“What didn’t you know?””

“That Richard was using me.””

The room went quiet.

“Explain.””

Vanessa took a deep breath.

“When I was younger, I found out about the documents.””

“The fraud?””

She nodded.

“I thought they belonged to me.””

“Why?””

“Because I thought Dad had chosen you over me.””

There it was.

The same wound.

The same obsession.

“But Richard found me.””

My stomach tightened.

“He told me Robert had stolen my future.””

She looked down.

“I believed him.””

“And Graham?””

“He was supposed to help me get access to the documents.””

“But you fell for him.””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

She didn’t need to.

“So why expose the wedding?””

She looked at me.

“Because I found out the truth.””

“What truth?””

Her eyes filled.

“Richard didn’t want the documents because they would clear him.””

A pause.

“He wanted them because they would destroy you.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

Vanessa whispered:

“Claire, the documents don’t just prove Richard’s crimes.””

She looked terrified.

“They prove what happened the night you were born.””

I felt cold.

“What happened?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“Your biological mother didn’t disappear.””

May you like

Silence.

“She was taken.””
