Chapter 13: The Bloodline I Never Knew
For several minutes, I couldn’t move.
The message from Vanessa remained on my phone screen.
Your father didn’t save you from Richard.
He saved Richard from you.
I wanted to throw the phone away.
I wanted to scream that it was another lie.
Another manipulation.
Another attempt by my sister to control me.
But deep down, something felt different.
Because Vanessa had spent her entire life trying to hurt me.
Yet somehow, every secret she revealed led me closer to the same horrifying truth.
There was something about me that everyone knew except me.
I looked at my mother.
“Tell me everything.””
She didn’t answer immediately.
That scared me more than anything.
Because my mother always had an answer.
She always knew what to say.
But now she looked like someone who had been carrying a burden for too long.
“Your father wasn’t perfect,” she finally whispered.
I looked at her.
“Robert?””
She nodded.
“But he loved you.””
My eyes filled.
“Was that enough?””
My mother looked down.
“Yes.””
The answer was immediate.
“Yes, Claire. It was more than enough.””
I picked up the letter again.
My father’s handwriting.
The man who raised me.
The man who taught me how to swim.
The man who held my hand when I was afraid.
The man who I had called Dad my entire life.
Claire,
If you are reading this, then you know the truth about Richard.
But you do not yet know the whole truth.
I stopped.
My hands shook.
The whole truth.
Apparently, there were always more pieces.
Richard Ellison was my biological father.
But Robert Bennett was the man who chose me.
That was what the letter said.
Before I was born, my mother’s sister Emily had been involved with Richard.
Richard was charming.
Powerful.
Ambitious.
But he was also dangerous.
When Emily discovered his illegal activities, she tried to leave.
That was when everything changed.
Robert had been Emily’s closest friend.
He helped her escape.
He helped protect her.
And when Emily disappeared, Robert found me.
A baby with no one left.
A baby who would become the center of a battle between powerful people.
My father wrote:
I knew Richard would come looking for you.
Not because he loved you.
Because you were proof.
Proof of the life he tried to erase.
I closed my eyes.
Suddenly, everything made sense.
The hidden documents.
The trust.
The warnings.
The fear.
Richard didn’t want me because I was his daughter.
He wanted me because I was a threat.
But what threat?
I kept reading.
Richard built his entire empire on lies.
The only person who could expose him was Emily.
But when she disappeared, he thought the evidence disappeared too.
He was wrong.
Because Emily left something behind.
Something only you can access.
My heart started racing.
Something only I could access.
The trust.
The documents.
The reason Vanessa had spent years watching me.
I looked at my mother.
“What did Dad mean?””
She swallowed.
“I don’t know.””
I stared.
“You don’t know?””
“No.””
That was the first honest answer I had heard from her in days.
“Robert never told me everything.””
“Why?””
“Because he knew if I knew too much, Richard could use me.””
I sat down.
My entire life had been built around a secret I never asked for.
A secret that started before I was even born.
Then I heard something outside.
A car door closing.
My mother looked toward the window.
Her face changed.
Fear.
Again.
“Who is it?””
She didn’t answer.
I walked toward the window.
A black SUV was parked outside.
A man stepped out.
Older.
Gray hair.
Expensive suit.
I knew immediately.
Richard Ellison.
My biological father.
The man who had haunted my family for decades.
The man who had destroyed my sister’s wedding.
The man responsible for so much pain.
He looked toward the house.
Toward me.
And somehow, I knew.
He had been waiting for this moment.
I stepped outside.
My mother grabbed my arm.
“Claire, don’t.””
I looked at her.
“For thirty-two years, everyone told me what I could handle.””
I pulled away.
“I think I deserve the chance to find out.””
Richard stood near the driveway.
He looked older than I expected.
Not like a monster.
That almost made it worse.
“Claire Bennett.””
Hearing him say my name made my skin crawl.
“You know who I am.””
He smiled sadly.
“Yes.””
“You’re Richard Ellison.””
“Yes.””
“My father.””
The word felt strange.
His expression changed.
Only slightly.
“I was wondering when you would say that.””
I felt anger rise.
“You don’t get to act like this is emotional.””
“I know.””
“Do you?””
I stepped closer.
“Because I spent my entire life believing one man was my father.””
Richard looked away.
“Robert was a good man.””
I froze.
I didn’t expect that.
“You hated him.””
“No.””
His voice became quiet.
“I hated that he was better than me.””
Silence.
For the first time, I saw something human in him.
Regret.
“I made mistakes.””
“You destroyed lives.””
“Yes.””
The honesty shocked me.
“I did.””
He reached into his coat.
My body tensed.
But he pulled out a small envelope.
“This belonged to your mother.””
My heart stopped.
“Emily?””
He nodded.
“She wanted you to have it.””
“Where was she?””
Richard looked at the ground.
“I don’t know.””
“Don’t lie.””
“I’m not.””
His voice cracked.
“She disappeared because she knew what I was capable of.””
I stared at him.
“And Vanessa?””
His expression changed.
“Vanessa is desperate.””
“You used her.””
“Yes.””
The answer came quickly.
“I did.””
My anger became almost unbearable.
“She’s my sister.””
“No.””
Richard looked at me.
“She’s your sister because Robert chose to love her like one.””
That sentence hurt.
Because it was true.
“She has spent her entire life trying to prove she deserved what you had.””
“What did I have?””
Richard looked at me.
“A father who loved you.””
The words broke something inside me.
Because that was the one thing nobody could take away.
Not Vanessa.
Not Richard.
Not the truth.
Robert Bennett was my father.
Then Richard said something that changed everything.
“But Claire, you need to understand one thing.””
“What?””
“The reason Vanessa wanted that box…”
He looked directly at me.
“Was not because of money.””
My heart tightened.
“Then why?””
“Because she knows what your father discovered about her.””
A cold feeling spread through me.
“What did he discover?””
May you like
Richard stepped back.
“That she was never working alone.””
