Chapter 8: The Woman Who Knew Too Much
I drove to the meeting place alone.
Daniel would have told me not to.
He would have told me it was risky.
He would have told me not to trust someone who disappeared for six months.
And he would have been right.
But there was something about Laura’s voice.
Fear.
Real fear.
Not the kind Sarah performed.
The kind someone has when they know they are standing too close to something dangerous.
The coffee shop was nearly empty.
A rainy evening.
A few people near the windows.
A tired employee cleaning tables.
Normal.
Which somehow made everything feel more suspicious.
Laura sat in the corner.
I almost didn’t recognize her.
She looked exhausted.
Different.
Before everything happened, Laura had always been confident.
Professional.
Organized.
Now she looked like someone who hadn’t slept in weeks.
She stood when she saw me.
“Michael.””
I sat across from her.
“Start talking.””
She looked down.
“I know you’re angry.””
“Angry?””
I laughed quietly.
“My life was destroyed.””
“I know.””
“No.””
I leaned forward.
“You don’t know.””
Her eyes filled with guilt.
“You’re right.””
That surprised me.
She didn’t defend herself.
She accepted it.
“I should have said something earlier.””
“Why didn’t you?””
She looked toward the window.
“Because David threatened me.””
My expression hardened.
“What did he threaten you with?””
“My family.””
The answer came quickly.
Too quickly.
I believed her.
“What does he have?””
Laura opened her bag.
She pulled out a small envelope.
“I saved copies.””
Inside were documents.
Emails.
Transactions.
Contracts.
I looked through them.
My hands became colder with every page.
“What is this?””
“David had been planning this for over a year.””
I looked up.
“Planning what?””
“To take over your company.””
I shook my head.
“That doesn’t make sense.””
“It does when you understand Sarah.””
I frowned.
“What does Sarah have to do with it?””
Laura sighed.
“Sarah was desperate.””
The words hurt.
But I listened.
“She wanted a different life. More money. More status.””
I looked away.
That was hard to hear.
Because part of me still remembered the woman she used to be.
Laura continued.
“David promised her everything.””
“What?””
“A new home. A new business. A fresh start.””
I looked at the documents.
“And me?””
Laura was quiet.
Then:
“You were the obstacle.””
I felt something break inside.
Not anger.
Something worse.
Disappointment.
Because deep down, some part of me had hoped there was another explanation.
A misunderstanding.
A mistake.
But there wasn’t.
Sarah chose this.
She chose to destroy me.
Laura pushed another document forward.
“This is the part you need to see.””
I read it.
Then stopped.
“What is this?””
“A transfer agreement.””
My eyes moved across the page.
My name.
The company name.
Sarah’s signature.
And David’s.
“They were going to transfer ownership?””
Laura nodded.
“After your conviction.””
I looked up.
“So the criminal case…”
“Was never about sending you to prison.””
My heart raced.
“Then what was it about?””
Laura looked directly at me.
“Removing you legally.””
The words hit me.
Because suddenly everything connected.
The accusations.
The custody battle.
The company.
The money.
They didn’t need me gone forever.
They just needed me powerless.
When I returned home, Daniel was waiting outside.
I immediately knew something was wrong.
“What happened?””
He looked at me.
“You went somewhere.””
It wasn’t a question.
I sighed.
“Someone contacted me.””
His expression changed.
“Who?””
“Laura.””
Daniel went silent.
“That’s not good.””
“Why?””
“Because Laura disappeared because she knew too much.””
I handed him the envelope.
“Then maybe she disappeared because she was trying to survive.””
Daniel opened the documents.
As he read, his face changed.
“This…”
“What?””
He looked up.
“Michael, this is bigger than custody.””
I nodded.
“I know.””
“No.””
He shook his head.
“You don’t understand.””
He pointed at the documents.
“This isn’t just fraud.””
May you like
A pause.
“This is conspiracy.””
