Chapter 11: The Enemy I Never Saw Coming
The problem with uncovering one lie is that it often reveals ten more.
I thought David and Sarah were the end of the story.
I was wrong.
They were only the first chapter.
Daniel spent the next two days investigating everything connected to David.
Bank records.
Business documents.
Old communications.
Every piece of information we could find.
And every answer created another question.
Finally, he called me.
“Michael, you need to come to my office.””
I knew from his voice that something was wrong.
When I arrived, he had papers spread across his desk.
“Tell me.””
He looked at me.
“You remember when Sarah said David had help?””
I nodded.
“We found it.””
My heart started beating faster.
“Who?””
Daniel pushed a document toward me.
I looked down.
At first, I didn’t understand.
Then I saw the name.
And everything inside me went cold.
*Richard Carter.*
My father.
I stared at the page.
“No.””
Daniel watched me carefully.
“Michael.””
“No.””
I pushed the paper away.
“That’s impossible.””
My father had been dead for three years.
He couldn’t have been involved.
He couldn’t have known.
He couldn’t have helped destroy me.
Daniel sighed.
“Michael, it’s not your father.””
I looked up.
“What?””
He pointed.
“Richard Carter was your uncle.””
I froze.
My uncle.
My father’s younger brother.
A man I barely knew.
A man who had disappeared from our family years ago.
“What does he have to do with this?””
Daniel leaned forward.
“Your uncle owned a percentage of the company before you bought him out.””
I remembered.
Years earlier.
My father had passed away.
My uncle had demanded control.
There had been arguments.
Legal battles.
Eventually, I bought his share.
I thought it was over.
Apparently, it wasn’t.
“He wanted the company back.””
Daniel nodded.
“And David offered him a way.””
I stood.
“This goes back years?””
“Yes.””
I walked toward the window.
For years, I thought my biggest mistake was trusting Sarah.
Maybe it was trusting everyone.
That evening, I visited my mother.
I needed answers.
When she opened the door and saw my face, she already knew something was wrong.
“What happened?””
I walked inside.
“Mom, did Dad ever talk about Uncle Richard?””
Her expression changed.
That was all I needed.
“You know something.””
She sat down slowly.
“I hoped you would never find out.””
My heart sank.
“Find out what?””
She looked at me.
“Your uncle hated your father.””
“Why?””
“Because he thought your father stole his future.””
I laughed bitterly.
“By building a company?””
She nodded.
“Richard believed everything should have belonged to him.””
I looked away.
“So he worked with David.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
My mother’s voice became quieter.
“Because revenge lasts longer than anger.””
I thought about that.
Six months.
Maybe more.
A person doesn’t accidentally destroy someone’s life.
They plan it.
They wait.
They prepare.
And suddenly, my entire world looked different.
The arrest.
The accusations.
The company.
The custody battle.
It wasn’t just Sarah’s betrayal.
It was a war.
And I had been fighting people I didn’t even know were against me.
The next court hearing was supposed to decide custody.
But before it began, Daniel received a call.
He answered.
His expression changed.
“What?””
A pause.
“Are you sure?””
He hung up.
I looked at him.
“What?””
He didn’t answer immediately.
Then:
“David disappeared.””
My stomach dropped.
“What do you mean disappeared?””
“He left the state last night.””
“Can he do that?””
“Not if he’s under investigation.””
I stared at him.
“So he ran.””
Daniel nodded.
“He knows the truth is coming.””
But then his phone rang again.
This time, he looked even more concerned.
He answered.
“Hello?””
Silence.
Then:
“Where?””
I watched his face.
The color disappeared.
“What happened?””
He slowly lowered the phone.
“Michael.””
“What?””
May you like
His voice was quiet.
“Sarah was attacked.””
