Chapter 2: The Man Behind The Tattoos

Six months earlier, before the courtroom, before the handcuffs, before everyone decided I was a villain, I was just a father trying to keep his family together.

My mornings always started the same way.

Emily climbing onto my bed.

Her messy hair everywhere.

Her favorite stuffed rabbit dragging behind her.

“Daddy,” she would whisper.

Every single time.

Like she was telling me a secret.

“Are you awake?””

And every single time, I pretended I wasn’t.

“Nope.””

She would giggle.

“Yes you are.””

“Nope.””

“Daddy.””

“What?””

“You’re smiling.””

That was my favorite part of being a father.

The little moments.

The moments nobody else saw.

People saw the tattoos.

They saw the motorcycle.

They saw the scars on my hands from years of working with engines.

They saw a man who looked intimidating.

But Emily saw the person underneath.

She knew I sang badly while making breakfast.

She knew I cried during sad movies when I thought nobody noticed.

She knew I always checked the doors twice before going to sleep because I wanted her to feel safe.

She knew me.

Sarah used to know me too.

That was the hardest part.

Because once upon a time, she was the person who understood me better than anyone.

We met when I was twenty-seven.

I was working at a small garage.

She walked in because her car was making a strange noise.

I remember looking at the vehicle.

Then looking at her.

And immediately realizing I had no idea how to talk to someone that beautiful.

She laughed when I got nervous.

“You’re better with engines than people, aren’t you?””

I smiled.

“Probably.””

She smiled back.

“Good. People are overrated.””

I thought she was different.

I thought she was the kind of person who saw beyond appearances.

And she did.

At least, she used to.

When Emily was born, I thought I had everything.

A wife I loved.

A daughter I would die for.

A home filled with laughter.

Then slowly, things changed.

I didn’t notice at first.

Small things.

Arguments that seemed to come from nowhere.

Sarah getting angry when I worked late.

Sarah questioning where I went.

Sarah becoming distant.

At first, I blamed myself.

Maybe I wasn’t home enough.

Maybe I was too focused on work.

Maybe I wasn’t giving her what she needed.

So I tried harder.

I closed my shop earlier.

I spent more time at home.

I cooked.

I cleaned.

I planned family trips.

But somehow, nothing was enough.

Then came the night everything collapsed.

The night that turned me from a father into a suspect.

It started with a phone call.

I was at the garage finishing a repair when Sarah called.

Her voice was shaking.

“Michael.””

I immediately knew something was wrong.

“What happened?””

“Come home.””

“Are you okay?””

“Just come home.””

I dropped everything.

When I arrived, police cars were already outside my house.

My heart stopped.

I ran toward the front door.

An officer stepped in front of me.

“Sir, stop.””

“What happened?””

“Are you Michael Carter?””

“Yes.””

The officer looked at another officer.

Then back at me.

“Turn around.””

I laughed because I thought he was joking.

“What?””

“Sir, turn around.””

That was when I saw Sarah standing behind them.

Holding Emily.

Crying.

And looking at me like she was afraid.

I still remember that moment.

Because I knew then.

Something had changed forever.

“Sarah?””

She looked away.

The officer grabbed my arm.

“Michael Carter, you are under arrest…”

I couldn’t even hear the rest.

My eyes were only on my daughter.

Emily was crying.

“Daddy!””

I fought against the officers.

Not because I wanted to hurt anyone.

Because my little girl was reaching for me.

“Emily!””

But Sarah pulled her back.

And that image destroyed me.

For six months, I kept asking myself the same question.

Why?

Why would Sarah do this?

Why would the woman who once loved me become the person trying to take everything away?

I finally got my answer the week before the trial.

My attorney placed a folder on the table.

“Michael, you need to prepare yourself.””

I opened it.

Inside were documents.

Photos.

Messages.

Evidence.

And one name.

A name I never expected to see.

My hands started shaking.

“No…”

My lawyer looked at me carefully.

“I’m sorry.””

I stared at the pages.

Because suddenly everything made sense.

The accusations.

The timing.

The lies.

Sarah wasn’t just trying to win custody.

She was hiding something.

Something much bigger.

And she was willing to destroy me to keep it hidden.

The next morning, I walked into court wearing handcuffs.

But I wasn’t afraid anymore.

May you like

Because for the first time in six months…

I knew exactly how to fight back.
