Chapter 12: The Woman Who Became The Target
I never thought I would say this.
But when I heard Sarah had been attacked, my first feeling wasn’t anger.
It was fear.
Not for her.
For Emily.
Because no matter what happened between Sarah and me, she was still Emily’s mother.
And Emily had already lost enough.
We rushed to the hospital.
The entire drive, I stared out the window.
Thinking.
Trying to understand.
The person who spent months destroying my life was now a victim.
The world had a strange way of changing positions.
When we arrived, police were already there.
Daniel spoke with an officer.
I stood in the hallway.
Waiting.
Then I saw her.
Sarah.
Sitting in a hospital bed.
A bandage on her forehead.
Her face pale.
For the first time in years…
She looked fragile.
She saw me.
And immediately looked away.
I understood.
She was ashamed.
A nurse left the room.
Daniel entered.
I followed.
Sarah looked at me.
“I didn’t expect you to come.””
I nodded.
“Emily needs you alive.””
That hurt her.
I saw it.
Because it was true.
Not cruel.
Just true.
She looked down.
“I deserved that.””
Nobody spoke.
Finally, Daniel asked:
“Who attacked you?””
Sarah’s hands tightened.
“I don’t know.””
“Did you see their face?””
“No.””
“Did they say anything?””
Sarah hesitated.
That hesitation mattered.
“What?””
She looked at me.
“They said they were cleaning up a mistake.””
The room went silent.
Daniel frowned.
“Cleaning up?””
Sarah nodded.
“They said I talked too much.””
I felt a chill.
Because suddenly, we understood.
David wasn’t running because he was scared.
He was running because someone was eliminating risks.
Sarah had become a risk.
A loose end.
Daniel looked at me.
“This means David isn’t the top.””
I nodded slowly.
“There’s someone above him.””
Sarah closed her eyes.
“I’m sorry.””
I looked at her.
“For what?””
“For not believing you.””
I didn’t answer.
Because forgiveness wasn’t something I could give instantly.
Some wounds healed slowly.
Some never disappeared.
But then Sarah whispered something else.
“Michael.””
“What?””
She opened her eyes.
“The night you were arrested…”
I waited.
“There was another person there.””
My entire body froze.
“What?””
Sarah looked terrified.
“Someone was watching.””
“Who?””
She swallowed.
“I don’t know.””
A pause.
“But they called David before the police arrived.””
My mind raced.
Someone else had been there.
Someone else had been controlling everything.
Daniel stepped closer.
“Sarah, think carefully.””
She looked at him.
“What did you hear?””
Her voice became a whisper.
“One thing.””
“What?””
She looked at me.
“They said…”
Her face went pale.
“They said, ‘This time, Carter loses everything.’”
The words hung in the room.
Because that sentence changed everything.
This was never just about Sarah.
Never just about David.
Someone had been waiting years for this moment.
Someone who knew my family.
Someone who knew my business.
Someone who knew exactly where to hurt me.
And now they knew something else.
We were getting close.
May you like
Which meant they were no longer hiding.
They were coming for us.
