Calm

Chapter 8: The Enemy Hidden Among the Family

The whisper outside the underground door was quiet.

Almost gentle.

But it froze everyone inside the hidden room.

Daniel stood completely still.

His hand remained on the old recording device.

The voice had lasted only one word.

Finally.

Whoever was standing outside had been waiting.

Waiting for them to discover the truth.

Waiting for this exact moment.

Olivia moved closer to Daniel.

“Did you hear that?””

Nobody answered.

They all heard it.

Richard walked toward the door.

“Who is there?””

Silence.

Then a soft laugh.

A laugh that sounded familiar.

Daniel looked at his father.

Richard’s expression changed.

He knew the voice.

“Dad?””

Richard didn’t respond.

Daniel stepped closer.

“You know who that is.””

Richard looked at the door.

His voice was barely audible.

“Yes.””

“Who?””

Before Richard could answer, the door handle moved.

Slowly.

Someone on the other side was trying to open it.

Victoria grabbed a metal object from the desk.

Evelyn moved behind her children.

For the first time in decades, the Whitmore family was not protecting their image.

They were protecting themselves.

The lock clicked.

The door opened.

And standing there was a man Daniel had seen before.

The stranger from the gate.

Thomas Vane.

He looked older than the photograph on the wall.

But his eyes were the same.

Calm.

Cold.

Knowing.

Daniel stared.

“You.””

Thomas looked around the room.

Then smiled.

“Daniel.””

The way he said his name made Daniel uncomfortable.

Like they had met before.

Like Thomas knew him.

Richard stepped forward.

“What are you doing here?””

Thomas looked at him.

“Still asking the wrong questions after all these years.””

Richard’s jaw tightened.

“You disappeared.””

“Yes.””

“And now you come back tonight?””

Thomas glanced around the hidden room.

“Tonight was always going to happen.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Who are you?””

Thomas looked at him.

Then smiled sadly.

“I was your father’s best friend.””

Daniel looked at Richard.

“And now?””

Thomas’s expression changed.

“Now I’m the person who knows what he did.””

Richard immediately responded.

“Don’t listen to him.””

Daniel turned.

“Why?””

Richard hesitated.

Daniel’s eyes narrowed.

“Why shouldn’t I listen to him?””

Because that was the question nobody could answer.

Everyone had told Daniel who to believe.

But nobody had ever given him a reason.

Thomas walked deeper into the room.

His eyes moved toward the old documents.

“You found Michael’s message.””

Daniel froze.

“You knew about the recording?””

Thomas nodded.

“I helped him create it.””

Victoria looked shocked.

“What?””

Thomas looked at her.

“You didn’t know everything either.””

Victoria tightened her grip on the metal object.

“Where were you when Michael died?””

Thomas became silent.

For the first time, his confidence disappeared.

Daniel noticed.

There were too many secrets.

Too many people with pieces of the story.

And everyone believed their piece was the truth.

Thomas looked at Daniel.

“Your father wants you to believe I betrayed him.””

Richard said nothing.

“Your aunt wants you to believe Richard destroyed everything.””

Thomas continued.

“And your mother wants you to believe silence was an act of love.””

Evelyn looked away.

Thomas lowered his voice.

“But none of them are completely honest.””

Daniel felt exhausted.

“Then tell me the truth.””

Thomas nodded.

“That’s why I came.””

He reached into his coat and pulled out a small envelope.

Daniel immediately recognized the handwriting.

Michael.

Another letter.

Richard stepped forward.

“No.””

Thomas looked at him.

“You had twenty-five years.””

He handed it to Daniel.

“Now it’s his turn.””

Daniel opened the letter.

The handwriting was shaky.

But clear.

Daniel,

If you are reading this, then the people around you finally decided you were old enough to know the truth.

Daniel continued.

Your birth was never the problem.

He frowned.

The problem was what people believed your birth represented.

He looked up.

Thomas watched him.

Daniel kept reading.

There are people who wanted control of the company. They believed you had a legal connection to my shares and my inheritance.

Daniel looked confused.

“My inheritance?””

Thomas nodded.

“Michael owned part of the company.””

Daniel continued.

Richard promised me he would protect you. I believed him.

Daniel looked at Richard.

The letter continued.

But after I died, everything changed.

Daniel stopped.

His eyes moved across the next sentence.

Richard made a choice.

The room went silent.

“What choice?””

Nobody answered.

Daniel looked at Thomas.

“What did he do?””

Thomas looked at Richard.

Richard closed his eyes.

Then finally spoke.

“I changed the inheritance documents.””

Daniel stared.

“What?””

Richard looked broken.

“I removed your connection to Michael’s estate.””

Daniel felt anger rise.

“You stole my inheritance?””

“No.””

Richard’s voice was desperate.

“I protected you.””

“By changing legal documents?””

“Yes.””

“Without telling me?””

“Yes.””

Daniel stepped back.

“How is that protection?””

Richard looked at him.

“Because if people knew you had access to Michael’s assets, you would have become a target.””

Thomas interrupted.

“That’s only part of the truth.””

Richard looked at him.

“Thomas.””

Thomas ignored him.

“The real reason Richard changed the documents was because someone inside the family wanted those assets.””

Daniel looked around.

“Someone in the family?””

Thomas nodded.

“Yes.””

A cold silence filled the room.

Daniel looked at Evelyn.

Then Olivia.

Then Richard.

“Who?””

Thomas did not answer immediately.

Instead, he looked toward the door.

“We don’t have much time.””

“What does that mean?””

Thomas pointed upward.

“The person who locked this room knows we are here.””

Everyone looked at the door.

Daniel felt a chill.

Someone had trapped them.

Someone who knew about the hidden room.

Someone who knew the family secrets.

Thomas moved toward the old shelves.

“There is another exit.””

Richard stared.

“You knew?””

Thomas nodded.

“Michael showed it to me.””

Victoria looked angry.

“You knew this entire time?””

Thomas looked at her.

“I knew enough to survive.””

The words were painful.

Because everyone in this family had been surviving.

Not living.

Surviving.

Thomas opened a hidden panel behind the shelves.

A narrow tunnel appeared.

Daniel stared.

“This mansion has tunnels?””

Richard looked ashamed.

“Yes.””

“Of course it does.””

Daniel almost laughed.

“Why wouldn’t it?””

One secret after another.

One hidden door after another.

The Whitmore mansion was not a home.

It was a vault.

A place built to contain the past.

They entered the tunnel.

The passage was dark and narrow.

Daniel walked beside Thomas.

After several minutes, he finally asked:

“Do you know who is inside the family?””

Thomas stopped.

“Yes.””

Daniel waited.

“Who?””

Thomas looked at him.

“You’re not ready.””

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“I’ve heard that my entire life.””

Thomas looked at him.

Then quietly said:

“Your sister knows.””

Daniel froze.

“What?””

Thomas continued walking.

“Olivia knows more than she told you.””

Daniel turned around.

Olivia stopped.

Everyone looked at her.

Her face changed.

Not confusion.

Not anger.

Fear.

Daniel stared.

“Olivia?””

She said nothing.

His heart sank.

Because his sister’s silence was the one answer he never expected.

“Tell me I’m wrong.””

Olivia looked at him.

Tears formed in her eyes.

“I was going to tell you.””

Daniel felt betrayed.

“Tell me what?””

The tunnel seemed to become colder.

Olivia whispered:

“I knew about the blue room.””

Nobody moved.

“I knew about Victoria.””

Daniel stared.

“How?””

Olivia looked down.

“Because she contacted me first.””

The words destroyed the last piece of trust Daniel had left.

Richard looked shocked.

Evelyn looked heartbroken.

Victoria looked betrayed.

Thomas only watched.

Because he knew.

The family was finally reaching the truth.

Not the truth from documents.

Not the truth from old recordings.

The truth from the people who were still alive.

Daniel looked at his sister.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Olivia cried silently.

“Because I was scared.””

“Of what?””

She looked at him.

“Of losing you.””

Daniel shook his head.

“Everyone says that.””

He stepped away.

“Everyone says they lied because they loved me.””

The tunnel fell silent.

Then Thomas spoke.

“Daniel.””

Everyone looked at him.

His expression was serious.

“You need to understand something.””

Daniel looked at him.

“What?””

Thomas lowered his voice.

“The person who started all of this…”

A pause.

“The person who has been controlling every message, every photograph, every secret…”

He looked toward the mansion above them.

“Is not trying to destroy your family.””

Daniel waited.

“They are trying to expose the person who destroyed it.””

A distant sound echoed through the tunnel.

Footsteps.

Someone was following them.

Thomas turned off the flashlight.

Everyone froze.

From the darkness ahead…

A voice whispered.

“Daniel.””

His blood turned cold.

Because he recognized the voice.

It was someone from his family.

May you like

Someone he trusted.

Someone who should not have been there.
