Chapter 4: The Child Hidden From the World

Daniel could no longer hear the storm outside.

He could no longer hear the rain hitting the windows or the distant voices of security guards trying to understand what was happening inside the mansion.

All he could hear was his own heartbeat.

Fast.

Confused.

Angry.

He stared at the photograph in his hand.

A hospital room.

His mother.

Victoria.

A newborn baby.

And a sentence that had shattered everything he believed about himself.

Your parents told you that you were their first child.

Daniel slowly lowered the phone.

“Tell me this isn’t real.””

Nobody answered.

That was the worst part.

Not the secret.

Not the photograph.

The silence.

His parents had always been good at hiding things.

But this time, they were not even trying.

They were caught.

“Dad?””

Richard looked at him.

Daniel searched his father’s face for an explanation.

For some kind of denial.

For anger.

For anything.

But Richard only looked tired.

Like a man who had carried a heavy burden for too long and finally realized he could no longer carry it alone.

“Daniel…”

“No.””

Daniel stepped back.

“Don’t say my name like everything is normal.””

His voice broke slightly.

“Tell me the truth.””

Richard looked at Evelyn.

She looked away.

And that answer hurt more than words.

Daniel laughed quietly.

A painful, empty laugh.

“I spent my whole life trying to understand why you were never satisfied with me.””

Richard frowned.

“What are you talking about?””

“I thought maybe I wasn’t successful enough. Maybe I wasn’t strong enough. Maybe I wasn’t exactly what you wanted.””

Daniel shook his head.

“But maybe I was never really your son.””

Olivia immediately stepped closer.

“Daniel, don’t say that.””

He looked at her.

“Why not?””

His eyes were filled with years of frustration.

“Because it might be true?””

Olivia had no answer.

The room became unbearably quiet.

Then Evelyn finally spoke.

“You are my son.””

Daniel looked at her.

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

Tears filled her eyes.

“Because I was afraid.””

“Of what?””

She hesitated.

“Of losing you.””

The answer should have comforted him.

Instead, it made him angrier.

“You thought hiding my entire life from me was protecting me?””

Evelyn looked down.

“I thought if you knew the truth, you would hate me.””

Daniel froze.

Because there was something in her voice.

Not manipulation.

Not an excuse.

Regret.

Real regret.

Richard moved closer.

“Daniel, there are things about that time you don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

Richard looked at him.

“It wasn’t simple.””

Daniel shook his head.

“That’s what everyone says when the truth is ugly.””

Richard said nothing.

And Daniel realized something.

His father had no argument.

Only excuses.

“Who was the baby?””

Daniel asked.

Nobody responded.

His eyes moved between his parents.

“Who was the baby in that picture?””

Evelyn finally whispered:

“You.””

Daniel stared at her.

The room seemed to tilt.

“What?””

“You.””

Her voice trembled.

“You were that baby.””

Daniel looked at the photograph again.

The newborn.

The hospital room.

His younger mother.

“I don’t understand.””

Evelyn wiped her tears.

“When you were born, Victoria was there.””

“Why?””

“Because she was the only person I trusted.””

Daniel looked confused.

“But she said you erased her.””

Evelyn nodded slowly.

“I did.””

The honesty shocked him.

“Why?””

Evelyn looked toward the blue room.

“Because after you were born, everything changed.””

Richard closed his eyes.

Daniel noticed.

Again.

That reaction.

His father knew more.

Much more.

“What happened after I was born?””

Evelyn looked at Richard.

The question was no longer just hers to answer.

Richard remained silent.

Finally, he spoke.

“When Daniel was born, Victoria discovered something about the company.””

Daniel frowned.

“We’re back to the company?””

Richard ignored the comment.

“She found documents. Financial records. Information she believed proved someone inside the company was stealing money.””

“Someone?””

Richard’s face hardened.

“She thought it was me.””

Daniel stared.

“Was she wrong?””

The question remained hanging.

Richard looked away.

That was the second time he failed to answer.

Then a sound came from the hallway.

Footsteps.

Everyone turned.

A security guard appeared.

“Mr. Whitmore.””

Richard immediately became alert.

“What is it?””

The guard looked nervous.

“We found someone near the east gate.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Who?””

The guard swallowed.

“She refused to give her name.””

Richard’s expression changed.

“Where is she?””

“In the security room.””

Everyone knew.

Without saying it.

They all knew.

Victoria had returned.

Richard walked quickly toward the security room.

Daniel followed.

This time, nobody tried to stop him.

The security room was located beneath the main staircase.

A small space filled with monitors showing every corner of the estate.

On one screen, a woman sat in a chair.

She appeared to be in her late fifties.

Her hair was dark with streaks of silver.

Her posture was calm.

Almost confident.

She looked like someone who had spent years waiting for this exact moment.

Daniel stopped when he saw her.

Even without seeing her face clearly, he knew.

Victoria Hale.

The woman who had destroyed the perfect image of his family.

The woman who had revealed every secret.

Richard entered the room.

For several seconds, he and Victoria simply stared at each other through the glass.

Twenty-five years of anger.

Twenty-five years of silence.

Twenty-five years of unfinished business.

Then Victoria smiled.

Not happily.

Sadly.

“Hello, Richard.””

His jaw tightened.

“You shouldn’t be here.””

Victoria stood.

“That’s what you said twenty-five years ago.””

Evelyn entered behind Daniel.

The moment Victoria saw her sister, her expression changed.

Pain replaced confidence.

“Evelyn.””

Evelyn could barely speak.

“Victoria.””

Daniel watched them.

Two sisters.

Separated by a secret.

Destroyed by the same history.

Victoria looked at Daniel.

And her expression softened.

“You’re him.””

Daniel felt uncomfortable.

“Who are you?””

Victoria looked at Richard.

Then back at Daniel.

“I’m the person who held you when you were born.””

Daniel’s breath caught.

“You remember me?””

Victoria smiled sadly.

“I remember everything.””

Richard stepped between them.

“Enough.””

Victoria’s eyes turned cold.

“No, Richard. Not anymore.””

She reached into her coat and pulled out a small envelope.

Daniel immediately recognized it.

Another piece of the truth.

Another weapon.

Victoria placed it on the table.

“This is why I came back.””

Richard stared at it.

“What is it?””

Victoria looked at Daniel.

“The reason your parents spent thirty-two years lying to you.””

Daniel picked up the envelope.

Inside was a document.

An official birth record.

But there was something wrong.

The name on it was not Daniel Whitmore.

His hands trembled.

“What is this?””

Victoria looked directly into his eyes.

“The truth about who you are.””

Daniel looked down at the paper.

And for the first time in his life, he saw a different name.

A different beginning.

A different story.

Behind him, Richard whispered:

“Daniel, don’t believe her.””

Daniel slowly turned around.

Because one thought suddenly became impossible to ignore.

If his father was telling the truth…

Why did he look terrified?

And if Victoria was lying…

Why had his own mother just admitted she had erased her?

The mansion lights flickered again.

The old walls seemed to remember every secret they had been forced to hold.

And now Daniel was standing in the middle of the biggest one.

The truth about his own identity.
