Chapter 6: The Man Who Knew the Original Secret
The name echoed through the security room.
Thomas Vane.
Daniel had never heard it before.
But judging by the reactions around him, everyone else had.
Richard stood in front of the monitors, staring at the empty gate where the stranger had disappeared.
For the first time since Daniel could remember, his father looked completely powerless.
Not angry.
Not confident.
Not in control.
Afraid.
Daniel noticed.
And that fear told him more than any explanation could.
“Who is Thomas Vane?””
Nobody answered.
Daniel looked at his mother.
Then Victoria.
Then finally his father.
“Why does everyone keep doing this?””
Richard turned.
“Doing what?””
“Looking at each other like you’re sharing a conversation I’m not allowed to hear.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“I’m done being the person everyone protects from the truth.””
Richard said nothing.
Daniel shook his head.
“I spent my entire life believing you respected honesty.””
A bitter smile crossed his face.
“But apparently honesty was only important when it was convenient.””
Evelyn looked hurt.
“Daniel…”
He looked at her.
“I love you.””
The words surprised everyone.
“But I don’t know how to trust you right now.””
Evelyn looked down.
Because she knew he was right.
Victoria watched quietly.
For twenty-five years, she had imagined this moment.
The moment the Whitmore family would finally face the consequences of their choices.
But seeing Daniel suffer was different.
He was not the enemy.
He was the child everyone had tried to protect.
And somehow, he was the one who had paid the highest price.
Richard walked toward the security monitors.
“Thomas cannot be here.””
Victoria looked at him.
“You said the same thing about me.””
Richard ignored her.
“He disappeared after the investigation.””
Daniel frowned.
“Investigation into what?””
Richard looked at him.
“The company.””
Again.
The same answer.
The same wall.
Daniel stepped forward.
“No.””
Richard stopped.
“No?””
“No more.””
Daniel pointed toward the document in his hand.
“No more vague explanations. No more half-truths. I want everything.””
Richard stared at his son.
For a moment, Daniel saw something unexpected.
Pride.
A small glimpse.
As if Richard recognized the strength he was showing.
Then it disappeared.
“Thomas Vane was my closest business partner.””
Daniel waited.
“And?””
Richard looked away.
“And he betrayed me.””
Victoria immediately responded.
“That’s not what happened.””
Richard’s eyes hardened.
“You weren’t there.””
“I was closer to the truth than anyone.””
Daniel looked between them.
“What did he do?””
Richard remained silent.
Victoria answered.
“Thomas discovered your father was hiding financial records.””
Daniel’s stomach tightened.
“About the fraud?””
Richard interrupted.
“I told you. I was accused.””
Victoria looked at him.
“And I told you. You were exposed.””
The tension between them filled the room.
Daniel could feel there was a much larger story underneath.
Something neither side wanted to reveal.
“Why was I hidden?””
That question stopped everything.
Daniel looked at Victoria.
“You said Thomas was connected to why the blue room existed.””
Victoria nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
She took a deep breath.
“Because Thomas knew about you.””
Daniel froze.
“Me?””
“Yes.””
Victoria looked at the birth document.
“He knew you existed before the world knew your name.””
Daniel felt a cold sensation move through him.
“What does that mean?””
Victoria looked at Richard.
“Tell him.””
Richard didn’t move.
“Richard.””
Still nothing.
Victoria’s voice became sharper.
“Tell your son why Thomas Vane was searching for him.””
Richard closed his eyes.
Then finally spoke.
“When you were born, there was a leak.””
Daniel frowned.
“A leak?””
“Someone inside the company discovered information about our family.””
“What information?””
Richard looked at him.
“You.””
Daniel stared.
“I don’t understand.””
Richard continued.
“Your birth was connected to a legal dispute involving my company. Certain people believed you were the key to controlling my future.””
Daniel felt confused.
“How could a baby control anything?””
Richard looked at him.
“Because of who your biological father was.””
The room became completely silent.
Daniel stopped breathing.
“What?””
Evelyn looked devastated.
Victoria closed her eyes.
The secret had finally reached the surface.
Daniel looked at his mother.
“Biological father?””
His voice was barely audible.
“Dad…”
Richard looked at him.
The word hurt him.
Because he knew what Daniel was asking.
“You’re my father.””
Richard nodded.
“Yes.””
“But…”
Richard looked down.
“There are things about your birth that are complicated.””
Daniel felt anger rising again.
“Complicated?””
He laughed.
“That’s the word everyone uses when they don’t want to say something terrible.””
Evelyn walked toward him.
“Daniel, please.””
He stepped away.
“No.””
He looked at Richard.
“Who was my biological father?””
Nobody spoke.
Then Victoria answered.
“His name was Michael Hale.””
Daniel looked at her.
“My father was Hale?””
Victoria nodded.
“Yes.””
Daniel felt overwhelmed.
Another name.
Another person.
Another secret.
“Who was Michael?””
Victoria’s expression changed.
“He was my brother.””
Daniel froze.
“Your brother?””
“Yes.””
The room became impossible to understand.
“My mother’s sister.””
“My biological father’s sister.””
Daniel looked at Evelyn.
“And you knew all of this?””
Evelyn nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Her tears fell.
“Because Michael died before you were born.””
Daniel went silent.
Victoria continued.
“Michael was involved in the investigation against Richard’s company.””
Richard looked away.
“He was trying to expose corruption.””
Daniel stared.
“And then he died.””
Nobody answered.
But he knew.
The silence was enough.
“Was he killed?””
Evelyn looked terrified.
Richard immediately said:
“Daniel.””
That was all.
Just his name.
But the warning was clear.
Daniel looked at him.
“You know.””
Richard didn’t respond.
“You know what happened to him.””
Richard’s silence became an answer.
Suddenly, the security alarm started.
A loud warning filled the room.
Everyone turned toward the monitors.
One camera showed the blue room.
The forbidden room.
The door was open.
Again.
But nobody had entered.
A message appeared on the screen.
Not from the security system.
From someone else.
Black letters appeared against a white background.
The second secret is not in the blue room.
Everyone stared.
Another sentence appeared.
It is beneath the house.
Daniel looked at Richard.
His father’s face changed.
Not confusion.
Recognition.
“You know about this.””
Richard didn’t answer.
Victoria stepped closer to the monitor.
“There was another room.””
Daniel turned.
“Another room?””
Victoria nodded.
“Yes.””
“Where?””
She looked at the floor beneath them.
“The original foundation of the mansion.””
Daniel felt a chill.
“You mean under this house?””
Richard finally spoke.
“There was never supposed to be anything there.””
Victoria looked at him.
“But there was.””
The message disappeared.
Then the final words appeared.
Come find the truth.
The lights went out.
Complete darkness swallowed the room.
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Then Daniel heard something.
A sound beneath them.
A deep mechanical noise.
Like something old opening.
The mansion itself seemed to wake up.
Richard whispered:
“No.””
Daniel turned toward him.
“What?””
Richard looked terrified.
“The basement door.””
“What about it?””
Richard’s voice dropped.
“It hasn’t opened in twenty-five years.””
A hidden lock clicked somewhere beneath the floor.
May you like
And slowly…
The house revealed another secret.
