Chapter 5: The Name That Was Buried With the Past

Daniel stared at the document in his hands.

The room felt smaller.

The air felt heavier.

Every person around him was waiting for his reaction, but nobody understood that his entire life had just been reduced to a piece of paper.

A different name.

A different beginning.

A different truth.

He read the document again.

Then again.

But the words refused to make sense.

“This isn’t possible.””

His voice was quiet.

Almost a whisper.

Victoria watched him carefully.

“I know it’s difficult.””

Daniel looked up.

“Difficult?””

The anger returned.

“You think this is just difficult?””

He held up the document.

“You’re telling me my parents lied about who I am.””

Victoria did not look away.

“Yes.””

Richard stepped forward.

“That document is meaningless.””

Daniel turned toward him.

“Then why are you afraid of it?””

Richard froze.

Only for a second.

But Daniel noticed.

He noticed everything now.

Every hesitation.

Every glance.

Every silence.

Because his entire life had been built around things nobody wanted him to see.

Victoria walked closer.

“Daniel, your father spent decades making sure this information disappeared.””

Richard’s expression hardened.

“Be careful.””

Victoria smiled sadly.

“I spent twenty-five years being careful.””

She looked at Daniel.

“And look where that got us.””

Evelyn stood between them.

“Stop.””

Everyone turned.

Her voice was shaking.

“I can’t listen to both of you destroy each other anymore.””

Victoria looked at her sister.

“Destroy each other?””

A painful laugh escaped her.

“Evelyn, we were destroyed a long time ago.””

The words cut deeper than Daniel expected.

Because he could see it.

Whatever happened twenty-five years ago had not only created secrets.

It had damaged everyone in the room.

Daniel looked at the document again.

The name printed there felt unfamiliar.

Like it belonged to someone else.

“What was my name?””

Nobody answered.

Daniel looked at his mother.

“Mom.””

Evelyn’s eyes filled with tears.

“Daniel…”

“What was my name before Whitmore?””

Richard closed his eyes.

And Evelyn whispered:

“Daniel Hale.””

The room went silent.

Daniel felt like the ground disappeared beneath him.

“Hale?””

He looked at Victoria.

“You’re saying I’m related to you?””

Victoria nodded.

“Yes.””

Daniel stared.

“You’re my aunt?””

Victoria’s expression softened.

“Yes.””

“And my parents knew?””

Another silence.

That was all the answer he needed.

Daniel turned away.

He walked toward the window, staring out at the dark garden beyond the mansion.

Thirty-two years.

Every birthday.

Every family photo.

Every memory.

Suddenly, everything felt uncertain.

“What else don’t I know?””

Nobody spoke.

Daniel turned around.

“I’m asking a simple question.””

His voice grew louder.

“What else?””

Richard finally answered.

“There are things you need to understand before you judge us.””

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“That’s your answer?””

Richard stepped forward.

“You have no idea what we were dealing with.””

“Then tell me!””

Daniel’s voice echoed through the room.

“Tell me why my name changed. Tell me why my aunt disappeared. Tell me why there was a locked room in this house. Tell me why everyone has been lying to me since the day I was born.””

Richard looked at his son.

And for the first time, he looked older.

Not powerful.

Not untouchable.

Just tired.

“When you were born, there was a threat against our family.””

Daniel frowned.

“A threat from who?””

Richard looked at Victoria.

She answered.

“From the people your father trusted.””

Daniel looked between them.

“What does that mean?””

Victoria crossed her arms.

“It means Richard wasn’t only hiding secrets from you.””

She looked directly at him.

“He was hiding secrets from himself.””

Richard’s expression changed.

“Enough.””

“No.””

Victoria stepped closer.

“You don’t get to decide when the truth begins and ends anymore.””

Daniel watched them.

There was history between them.

Deep history.

The kind built from betrayal.

“You two know something about my birth.””

Nobody denied it.

Daniel felt his stomach tighten.

“Tell me.””

Evelyn walked toward him.

“You were born during the most dangerous time of our lives.””

She took a breath.

“Richard’s company was collapsing because of an internal investigation.””

Daniel looked at his father.

“An investigation?””

Richard nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

“For what?””

Richard hesitated.

Victoria answered.

“Fraud.””

The word hung in the air.

Daniel stared.

“My father was investigated for fraud?””

Richard’s face became cold.

“I was accused.””

Victoria corrected him.

“You were exposed.””

Evelyn looked at her sister.

“Victoria.””

“What?””

Victoria’s voice cracked.

“Are you still protecting him?””

Evelyn looked away.

That was when Daniel realized something.

His mother was not protecting Richard because she believed he was innocent.

She was protecting him because she loved him.

And sometimes love made people do terrible things.

Daniel turned to Victoria.

“What happened after the investigation?””

Victoria looked at Richard.

“He made a deal.””

Richard’s eyes narrowed.

“Don’t.””

Victoria continued.

“He gave up something important to protect the company.””

Daniel waited.

“What?””

Victoria looked at Evelyn.

“He gave up the truth.””

A long silence followed.

Daniel felt frustrated.

“Everyone keeps talking like I’m supposed to understand. I don’t.””

Victoria sighed.

“Your father was willing to let people believe terrible things about him.””

Richard looked away.

“Because it was the only way.””

“The only way for what?””

Nobody answered.

Then suddenly, one of the security monitors flickered.

Everyone turned.

The screen showed the mansion entrance.

A man stood outside the gate.

Not security.

Not a guest.

A stranger.

The guard watching the monitor looked confused.

“We didn’t see him arrive.””

Richard immediately moved closer.

“Who is that?””

The camera zoomed in.

Daniel watched the screen.

The stranger appeared to be in his forties.

He wore a dark coat.

His face was calm.

Too calm.

Then the man lifted his hand.

He held something.

A photograph.

The same photograph that had started everything.

Richard went pale.

“No.””

Daniel noticed.

“You know him.””

Richard didn’t answer.

The stranger placed the photograph against the gate camera.

Then he held up a handwritten note.

The security system zoomed in.

Three words appeared.

Ask your father.

The stranger turned and walked away.

Richard immediately grabbed his phone.

“Lock down the property.””

The guards moved.

Daniel stared at him.

“Who was that?””

Richard ignored him.

“Everyone stays inside.””

Daniel stepped in front of him.

“Who was that?””

Richard looked at his son.

And this time, there was no way to hide.

“That was Thomas Vane.””

Victoria’s face changed instantly.

She whispered:

“He’s alive.””

Daniel looked at her.

“You know him too?””

Victoria nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

“Who is he?””

Richard looked toward the dark windows.

A terrible realization appeared on his face.

“He is the reason the blue room was created.””

Daniel felt a chill.

The mystery was growing.

Every answer created another question.

And now there was someone else connected to the secret.

Someone Richard believed was gone.

Someone Victoria believed was dead.

Someone who had returned on the same night the truth finally began to escape.

Daniel looked at the birth document still in his hand.

The name Daniel Hale no longer felt like a stranger.

It felt like a warning.

Because if his real identity had been hidden for thirty-two years…

Then the question was no longer who he was.

May you like

The question was why everyone had been so desperate to hide it.

And what they were willing to do to keep the rest of the truth buried.
