Chapter 9: The Bloodline Nobody Knew

Margaret didn't speak for nearly a minute.
She sat in Eleanor's study, holding the photograph of her younger sister.
Helen.
The little girl who had followed her around their childhood farm.
The teenager who had stolen her favorite dress.
The young woman who had promised they would never keep secrets from each other.
And now, according to the evidence on Eleanor's desk, the woman who had secretly given birth to Margaret's son.
“Tell me this isn't true,” Margaret whispered.
Vanessa sat beside her.
“I wish I could.””
Margaret turned.
“How long have you known?””
Vanessa looked down at her hands.
“Since last summer.””
“Last summer?””
“Yes.””
“And you let me spend Thanksgiving alone?””
Vanessa started crying harder.
“I didn't know how to tell you.””
Margaret pulled her hand away.
“You could have told me the truth.””
Vanessa nodded.
“You're right.””
Eleanor gently placed the photograph on the desk.
“Margaret, there are documents that support the investigator's findings. But I want to be careful. We shouldn't treat an old photograph as final proof of parentage.””
Margaret looked at her.
“What happened to Helen?””
Eleanor opened another folder.
“The investigator traced her to a small town in Pennsylvania. She changed her name after Richard's birth.””
Margaret closed her eyes.
“Why?””
“That is something we still need to establish.””
Lily wiped her cheeks.
“So Thomas Bell is my grandfather?””
Eleanor nodded slowly.
“Based on the evidence Frank collected, that appears to be the case.””
Lily looked horrified.
“But he was helping Dad steal Grandma's house.””
Marcus leaned against the wall.
“People can share blood and still make terrible choices.””
Daniel, who had remained unusually quiet, finally spoke.
“Family is what you do, not just who you're related to.””
Margaret looked at the photograph again.
“Frank knew?””
“Yes,” Eleanor replied.
“He discovered the connection after tracing the forged bank withdrawals.””
Peter Walsh shifted in his chair.
“I need to ask something.””
Everyone turned.
Peter looked uncomfortable.
“Thomas Bell has been a client of my firm for several years. He introduced Richard to me. He said he was helping his son resolve a financial problem.””
Margaret's eyes narrowed.
“His son?””
Peter nodded.
“He never explained the relationship. I assumed they were close family friends.””
Ethan studied him.
“Did you know about the suspicious deed?””
“No. I was given documents and told they had been legally executed. I should have verified the details more carefully.””
Eleanor folded her arms.
“Then you should cooperate fully with any investigation.””
Peter nodded.
“I will.””
Margaret stood.
“Can we find Helen?””
Eleanor looked at her.
“We can try.””
“I want to speak to my sister.””
Vanessa took her hand.
“Margaret, there's something you need to understand about Richard.””
Margaret turned.
“What?””
“He didn't know about the adoption until a few months ago.””
Lily looked at her mother.
“Dad didn't know?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“Thomas told him after the construction company failed. He showed Richard some old records and claimed he had been forced to give up his son.””
Margaret sat down again.
“Why would Thomas tell him now?””
“Because he wanted Richard to help him get access to Frank's money.””
Eleanor frowned.
“That's consistent with what Frank suspected.””
Vanessa continued.
“Thomas told Richard that Frank had stolen money that belonged to him. He convinced Richard that the house and the investment account should have been his all along.””
Marcus shook his head.
“So Thomas used his own son to steal from the woman who raised him.””
Vanessa nodded.
“He told Richard that once the house was transferred, they would divide the proceeds.””
Margaret's eyes filled.
“Richard believed him?””
“Yes.””
Lily looked at the floor.
“Dad always said Grandpa didn't love him.””
Margaret reached for her granddaughter.
“Your grandfather loved Richard very much.””
“Then why did he leave everything to you?””
“Because he knew I would need it.””
Eleanor placed the second will back inside its envelope.
“There's another matter. Frank left specific instructions about Thomas Bell.””
“What instructions?”” Marcus asked.
“He wanted a full investigation into the financial transactions. He also requested that all documents concerning Richard's adoption remain sealed until Margaret chose to reveal them.””
Margaret looked up.
“Why?””
Eleanor hesitated.
“Because Frank believed Richard might use the information to destroy his own identity if he learned the truth in the wrong circumstances.””
Lily frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Eleanor reached into the folder and removed a final document.
It was a copy of a hospital record.
The mother's name was Helen Whitmore.
The father's name was left blank.
But beside the birth date, someone had written a handwritten note.
*Biological father identified privately.*
Eleanor turned the page.
A separate letter was attached.
It was written by Helen.
Margaret recognized her sister's handwriting immediately.
Her hands began to shake.
“Read it,” she whispered.
Eleanor unfolded the letter.
Dear Frank,
I know you have every right to hate me. I know I disappeared when Margaret needed me most. But I was young, frightened, and convinced that giving Richard to you and Margaret was the only way to give him a safe life.
Thomas promised me he would never interfere. He promised he would stay away.
I have kept my distance for thirty years.
But now he's looking for our son.
Margaret covered her mouth.
Eleanor continued reading.
If Thomas ever contacts Richard, please don't let him convince our boy that he was abandoned because nobody loved him.
I gave him away because I loved him enough to let him have a better life.
The letter slipped from Eleanor's hands.
Margaret stared at the floor.
For thirty years, she had believed she and Frank had rescued a little boy who had lost his parents.
Now she was learning that her own sister had placed that baby in her arms.
And Thomas Bell had spent decades watching from a distance.
Marcus looked at Ethan.
“This explains why Thomas has so much influence over Richard.””
Ethan nodded.
“But it doesn't explain the second part of Frank's warning.””
“What second part?””
Ethan pointed to the bottom of the hospital record.
There was a handwritten reference to a second child.
A twin.
Margaret looked at Eleanor.
“Richard had a twin?””
Eleanor nodded.
“The investigator found a second birth record.””
Lily stood.
“Does that mean I have another aunt or uncle?””
Nobody answered.
Eleanor slowly removed a photograph from the folder.
Two newborn babies lay side by side in a hospital nursery.
One had a small birthmark near his left ear.
The other had the same mark.
On the back, Helen had written:
Richard and Daniel. My two boys.
Margaret stared at the photograph.
“Daniel?””
Marcus suddenly straightened.
He looked at the picture again.
Then at the name.
Daniel, the youngest biker, had been standing near the doorway.
He stepped forward slowly.
“Why is my name on that photograph?””
Eleanor looked at him.
“What's your full name?””
Daniel swallowed.
“Daniel Hayes.””
Eleanor examined his face.
Then she looked at the photograph.
“Mr. Hayes, I think you need to sit down.””
Daniel stared at the two babies.
One was Richard.
The other was him.

And suddenly, the woman he had met in a roadside diner that afternoon wasn't just a stranger who needed a son for Thanksgiving.
She might have been the grandmother he had spent his entire life believing was dead.
