Chapter 6: The Secret Frank Took to His Grave

Richard stood in the doorway, breathing heavily.

His eyes moved from the blue folder to the recorder in Margaret's hands.

“Give me that.””

Margaret held it against her chest.

“No.””

“Mom, you don't understand what's in there.””

“Then explain it.””

Richard stepped into the room.

Ethan moved between him and Margaret.

“Take a breath.””

“Get out of my way.””

“Not happening.””

Richard looked toward Lily.

“You too? After everything I've done for you?””

Lily shook her head.

“You mean everything you've done to Grandma?””

Richard's expression hardened.

“I paid for your school. I bought your clothes. I put a roof over your head.””

“And Grandma paid for this house,” Lily replied.

“Grandpa worked his whole life for it.””

Richard pointed at her.

“You have no idea what you're talking about.””

Margaret slowly stood.

“Then tell me what your father meant.””

Richard looked at the recorder.

“Dad was sick. He was confused. He started imagining things.””

“He remembered you meeting Thomas Bell.””

Richard's face changed.

“Where did you find that?””

Margaret held up the photograph.

“Why were you meeting him?””

Richard reached for the picture.

Ethan moved it out of his reach.

“Careful.””

Richard stared at him.

“You have no right to interfere in this family.””

Ethan's voice remained calm.

“Your mother invited us. Your daughter asked us to stay. And your father left behind evidence that someone may have committed fraud.””

Richard laughed, but the sound was hollow.

“You think a few old papers prove anything?””

Cole pointed toward the recorder.

“Your father's voice might.””

Richard's eyes narrowed.

“What did you hear?””

Nobody answered.

That silence frightened him more than any accusation.

He turned toward Margaret.

“Mom, please. Let me handle this.””

She looked at him for a long moment.

“That's what you've been saying for eleven months.””

“Because you needed help!””

“I needed my son.””

Richard looked away.

Margaret continued.

“I called you when the bathroom pipe burst. You sent a plumber but didn't come. I fell in the garden, and Lily found me. I spent Christmas alone because you said you were busy.””

Richard's jaw tightened.

“Mom, I had responsibilities.””

“And yet you had time to change my locks.””

He said nothing.

Margaret held the metal box.

“I want the truth.””

Richard suddenly looked exhausted.

“You don't know what Dad did to me.””

Ethan glanced at him.

“What did he do?””

Richard swallowed.

“He treated me like I was never good enough. Everything belonged to him. The house.

The money. The business. Even Mom's attention.””

Margaret frowned.

“Frank loved you.””

Richard laughed bitterly.

“He loved the version of me he wanted.””

“That doesn't explain the fake deed,” Ethan said.

Richard turned.

“It's not fake!””

“Then why is it dated after his death?””

Richard rubbed his forehead.

“I was supposed to inherit the house eventually. Dad told me that for years.””

Margaret shook her head.

“He told me the house would always be mine.””

“Because he knew you'd never sell it!””

“Why would I?””

Richard looked at the floor.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then he said something that made Margaret's heart sink.

“Because I needed the money.””

Ethan's expression sharpened.

“How much?””

Richard didn't answer.

“How much did you take?””

“Enough.””

Cole looked toward the documents.

“The bank statements suggest there were substantial withdrawals.””

Richard suddenly turned toward him.

“You don't know anything about those accounts.””

“Then tell us.””

Richard's hands began shaking.

“I had debts. The construction company collapsed. I borrowed money to keep it running. I thought I could replace everything before Dad found out.””

Margaret stared at him.

“You took your father's money?””

“I was going to pay it back.””

“How much?””

Richard closed his eyes.

“Four hundred thousand.””

Margaret stumbled backward.

Lily caught her arm.

“Grandma!””

Marcus appeared in the doorway.

He had heard enough from downstairs.

“What's going on?””

Ethan answered quietly.

“Richard admits he took money from his father's account.””

Marcus looked at Richard.

“Did you forge the deed?””

Richard shook his head.

“I didn't forge anything.””

Margaret lifted the photograph.

“Then what was Thomas Bell doing with you?””

Richard stared at it.

Finally, he spoke.

“Thomas said he could help me recover the money.””

“By transferring the house?”” Ethan asked.

Richard nodded reluctantly.

“He said if the deed was recorded, I could use the property as collateral.””

Margaret's eyes filled.

“You wanted to mortgage my home?””

Richard looked at her.

“I was going to save the family.””

“No,” Margaret whispered.

“You were going to save yourself.””

For the first time, Richard looked genuinely ashamed.

But Vanessa, who had quietly appeared behind him, spoke from the hallway.

“There's something else.””

Richard turned sharply.

“Vanessa, don't.””

She held up her phone.

“I recorded a conversation between Richard and Thomas Bell last month.””

Richard's face went pale.

“You did what?””

Vanessa stepped into the room.

“I heard them discussing the deed. I heard Thomas say he could get a notary to certify the signature.””

Peter Walsh appeared behind her.

“Mrs. Whitmore, if that recording is genuine, it may be important evidence.””

Vanessa nodded.

“There's more. Thomas told Richard that the house wasn't the only thing Frank had left behind.””

Margaret looked at her.

“What else?””

Vanessa glanced at Richard.

“He said Frank had discovered the money was being moved through another account. An account Richard didn't know existed.””

Ethan frowned.

“Whose account?””

Vanessa looked toward Margaret.

“Yours.””

Margaret shook her head.

“I don't have another account.””

Peter opened the blue folder again.

He examined the final bank statement, then slowly looked up.

“Mrs. Whitmore, this account was opened in your name. The balance listed here is over six hundred thousand dollars.””

Margaret stared at him.

“But I never opened it.””

Richard suddenly stepped forward.

“That's impossible.””

Peter looked at the signature on the statement.

Then at Margaret.

“Someone opened this account using your identity.””

Marcus's voice became cold.

“Who?””

Peter turned the paper around.

The account authorization carried two signatures.

Margaret Whitmore.

And beneath it, as the authorized representative:

*Richard Whitmore.*

Margaret looked at her son.

He didn't deny it.

Instead, he whispered something nobody in the room expected.

“Mom, I didn't open that account.””

Ethan studied him.

“Then who did?””

Richard looked at Vanessa.

Vanessa began crying.

And then she said the words that changed everything.

“Your father opened it before he died. But Richard wasn't the person he was protecting you from.””

She looked toward the hallway.

“Thomas Bell wasn't working alone.””

A phone began ringing downstairs.

Richard recognized the number immediately.

He pulled his phone from his pocket and stared at the screen.

*THOMAS BELL.*

Then a message appeared.

I know they found the box. Get your mother out of that house before they discover the second will.

Richard's face drained of color.

Because he suddenly understood something his father had planned three years earlier.

Frank hadn't left one secret behind.

May you like

He had left two.

And the second one could destroy everything Richard thought he knew about his family.
