Chapter 12: The Woman Who Was Forced to Leave

Eleanor read Frank's statement again.

Then she placed it carefully on the desk.

Margaret stood.

“Someone forced my sister to leave?””

Eleanor nodded.

“That's what Frank believed.””

“Who?””

“I don't know yet.””

Margaret looked toward the photograph of Helen.

“My sister was stubborn. She wouldn't have left her children willingly.””

Daniel sat down.

“Thomas said she disappeared.””

Eleanor opened another folder.

“Frank hired an investigator named Samuel Carter. His reports are included here.””

She began reading.

“Samuel located Helen in Pennsylvania in 1981. She was living under another name and working at a nursing home.””

Margaret's eyes widened.

“Was she alone?””

Eleanor turned another page.

“No. She had a young daughter with her.””

Elizabeth.

Margaret covered her mouth.

“What happened?””

Eleanor continued.

“According to the investigator, Helen refused to return to Thomas. She believed he was dangerous.””

Peter leaned forward.

“Did she explain why?””

Eleanor found another report.

“She claimed Thomas had threatened to take the children if she ever told anyone about their relationship.””

Daniel clenched his jaw.

“So he controlled her.””

“Yes.””

Margaret sat slowly.

“And Frank knew all this?””

“He discovered it shortly before he died.””

“Why didn't he tell me?””

Eleanor looked at her gently.

“Because he believed Thomas was watching him. He wanted to protect you and the children.””

Marcus glanced at the report.

“Does it say where Helen went?””

Eleanor shook her head.

“The investigator lost contact with her in 1984.””

Daniel looked frustrated.

“That's forty-two years ago.””

“There's an address in the final report.””

Eleanor read it.

“St. Mary's Hospital, Erie, Pennsylvania.””

Peter checked the date.

“That's where Helen was admitted after a serious accident.””

Margaret stood abruptly.

“What accident?””

Eleanor looked at the next page.

“An automobile collision. She suffered a head injury.””

Daniel frowned.

“Did she survive?””

“The hospital record says she was discharged.””

Eleanor turned another page.

“But there's a note here that she was transferred to a long-term care facility.””

Margaret's hands trembled.

“Which facility?””

Eleanor found the name.

“Rosewood Rehabilitation Center.””

Peter looked at the date.

“That facility closed years ago.””

Ethan shook his head.

“Records don't disappear just because a building closes.””

He took a photograph of the page.

“We can trace the facility's records through the state archives.””

Daniel stood.

“I'm going.””

Marcus looked at him.

“Not without a plan.””

“I've spent my entire life wondering who my biological mother was. Now I find out she might have been alive for decades, and everybody kept it from me.””

Marcus nodded.

“I understand.””

“No, you don't.””

Daniel's voice broke.

“I don't even know whether she remembers giving me away.””

Margaret stepped toward him.

“Then we'll find out together.””

Daniel looked at her.

For a moment, he seemed unable to speak.

Then he nodded.

Vanessa sat quietly beside Lily.

She had been holding something in her hand for several minutes.

Finally, she stood.

“There's one more thing.””

Richard wasn't there to stop her now.

She placed a small USB drive on Eleanor's desk.

“I copied this from Richard's computer.””

Eleanor looked at it.

“What is it?””

“Emails between Richard and Thomas.””

Peter picked it up.

“Are you certain?””

Vanessa nodded.

“I read them.””

Ethan asked, “What do they contain?””

Vanessa looked at Margaret.

“Richard knew Thomas had stolen the family inheritance. But he didn't know everything.””

She swallowed.

“Thomas told him that Helen had signed away her parental rights voluntarily. He also told him the adoption was arranged because she was unstable.””

Margaret shook her head.

“That isn't true.””

“No. It isn't.””

Vanessa continued.

“There are messages where Thomas admits he threatened Helen. He says he paid someone at the adoption agency to make sure the twins were separated.””

Daniel's face hardened.

“He deliberately separated us?””

Vanessa nodded.

“And he did something else.””

She looked toward Peter.

“He told Richard that if he helped transfer the house, Thomas would give him the original adoption records.””

Ethan frowned.

“Why would Richard want those?””

Vanessa looked at Lily.

“Because Thomas convinced him that Frank had never legally adopted him.””

Margaret's eyes widened.

“What?””

Vanessa nodded.

“He told Richard that his adoption papers were fraudulent. He said Richard had no legal claim to the family inheritance.””

Peter immediately shook his head.

“That's not how adoption works. If the adoption was legally finalized, Richard remained Frank and Margaret's son under the law.””

Vanessa looked relieved.

“That's what I told Richard.””

Ethan opened the USB drive on Eleanor's computer.

The first email was dated eight months earlier.

*From: Thomas Bell*

You want your share of the money? Then stop waiting for your mother to give it to you. Get the house transferred. The trust will follow.

The second email was more disturbing.

*From: Richard Whitmore*

What if Mom refuses?

Thomas's reply:

Then make her believe she has no choice. She's old. Nobody will believe her over you.

Margaret covered her mouth.

Daniel stared at the screen.

“That's the man who called himself my father.””

Marcus placed a hand on his shoulder.

“Biology doesn't excuse behavior.””

Peter continued scrolling.

Then he stopped.

“There's another email.””

It was dated just three days earlier.

Thomas had written to Richard:

The old woman has no idea what happened to Helen. Keep her away from Eleanor. If she finds the original hospital file, everything is finished.

Eleanor leaned closer.

“There's an attachment.””

Peter opened it.

A scanned hospital record appeared.

The patient name was Helen Whitmore.

The date was 1984.

But the most important information was in the final section.

*Emergency contact: Margaret Whitmore.*

Margaret stared.

“That's my old telephone number.””

Eleanor nodded.

“The hospital attempted to contact you.””

Margaret's voice trembled.

“I never received anything.””

Peter looked at the record.

“There's a handwritten note.””

He enlarged it.

Caller instructed staff not to contact Margaret. Patient transferred under alternative identity.

Margaret stepped backward.

“Who instructed them?””

Peter looked at the bottom of the page.

A name had been written beside the instruction.

*Thomas Bell.*

Daniel slammed his fist against the desk.

“He kept her away from us!””

Eleanor nodded slowly.

“And it appears he did more than that.””

She opened the final page.

The transfer destination was listed.

*Rosewood Rehabilitation Center — Patient File 1842.*

But beneath the facility name was another handwritten notation.

Patient released to legal guardian, December 1985.

Margaret frowned.

“Who was her legal guardian?””

Peter turned the page.

The name was printed clearly.

*THOMAS BELL.*

Nobody spoke.

Then Lily noticed something else.

“Grandma?””

Margaret looked at her.

“What is it?””

Lily pointed at the date.

“That's the same year Dad said Grandpa adopted him.””

Margaret stared at the documents.

Then she slowly understood.

Thomas hadn't merely hidden the truth about Richard's birth.

He had controlled Helen's life after the children were separated.

And he had been legally responsible for her when she disappeared from the records.

Daniel looked at Eleanor.

“Can you find out where my mother went after Rosewood?””

Eleanor nodded.

“I'll contact the state archives first thing tomorrow.””

Daniel shook his head.

“No. There's something we can do tonight.””

He picked up his phone.

“What?””

“I want to call Thomas.””

Marcus immediately stepped forward.

“Daniel—”

“I won't threaten him. I just want to ask him one question.””

Margaret looked at Daniel.

“What question?””

Daniel's eyes filled.

“Whether my mother ever knew I was alive.””

He dialed the number.

The phone rang twice.

Then Thomas answered.

“Daniel. I was wondering when you'd call.””

Daniel swallowed.

“Did my mother know I was alive?””

Thomas laughed softly.

“Of course she did.””

“Did she try to find me?””

A long silence followed.

Then Thomas replied.

“She tried.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Why didn't she?””

Thomas's voice became colder.

“Because I made sure she couldn't.””

Marcus looked at Ethan.

Ethan began recording the conversation.

Daniel's hands shook.

“What did you do to her?””

Thomas sighed.

“Your mother made some very bad decisions. I protected the family from her.””

Daniel's voice cracked.

“She was my mother.””

Thomas answered without hesitation.

“And you were better off without her.””

Then he added:

“By the way, Daniel, if you want to know where she is, stop listening to Eleanor Price. She's been lying to Margaret for thirty years.””

The call ended.

Daniel stared at the phone.

Margaret slowly sat down.

And Eleanor, who had remained silent throughout the conversation, finally spoke.

“There's a reason Thomas doesn't want you to find your mother.””

She opened the last sealed page of Frank's investigation.

At the bottom was an address.

A nursing home in Ohio.

And beside it, a note written in Frank's handwriting:

Helen is alive. She knows the truth about Thomas. If anything happens to me, find her before he does.
