Chapter 16: The Daughter Frank Never Mentioned

Margaret read the words again.

*Catherine Whitmore — adopted by Frank and Margaret Whitmore.*

Her hands trembled so badly that the photograph nearly slipped from her fingers.

Frank had been dead for three years.

And yet, in one small photograph, he had managed to turn her entire life upside down.

She looked at Helen, sleeping beneath the knitted blanket.

Then she looked toward the doorway.

“Daniel?””

He appeared almost immediately.

“What happened?””

Margaret held out the locket.

Daniel studied the photograph.

His expression changed.

“That's Grandpa Frank.””

“Yes.””

“And that's the baby?””

Margaret nodded.

“He told me we couldn't have children after Richard.””

Daniel looked confused.

“Maybe he didn't know?””

Margaret shook her head.

“He knew. Look at the inscription.””

Daniel read it twice.

“Catherine Whitmore.””

Marcus came closer.

“Are you saying Frank and Margaret adopted another child?””

Margaret swallowed.

“I'm saying my husband kept a daughter from me.””

The words hurt as soon as she spoke them.

Daniel gently took the locket.

“Maybe there's an explanation.””

“I want there to be.””

Peter entered the room with Ethan behind him.

“What's happened?””

Margaret showed him the photograph and the letter.

Peter read the document carefully.

“This is significant.””

“Significant?”” Margaret repeated.

“My husband had another daughter, and I never knew.””

Peter sat beside her.

“I don't want to speculate. We need to establish whether this was a formal adoption, a temporary placement, or an arrangement made under another name.””

Ethan examined the photograph.

“There's a date on the back.””

He tilted it toward the light.

“June 1980.””

Daniel looked at the letter.

“Helen said the baby was born in 1980.””

Peter nodded.

“And Frank's name appears as the adoptive father.””

Margaret closed her eyes.

“Why would he hide this from me?””

Nobody answered.

Then Helen stirred.

“Margaret?””

Her sister opened her eyes.

Margaret immediately moved beside her.

“Helen, sweetheart, I need to ask you something.””

Helen looked at the photograph.

Her face changed.

“Oh.””

“You knew?””

Helen nodded slowly.

“Frank promised he would tell you when it was safe.””

“Safe from whom?””

“Thomas.””

Margaret's voice broke.

“Why would Thomas care about a child Frank and I adopted?””

Helen looked toward Daniel.

“Because Catherine wasn't Thomas's daughter.””

Daniel frowned.

“Then who was her father?””

Helen closed her eyes.

“I never knew his real name.””

Margaret stared.

“What?””

“He was a man I met before Thomas. He was kind. He wanted to marry me. Thomas found out and threatened him.””

Peter leaned forward.

“Do you remember anything else about this man?””

Helen shook her head.

“Only that he worked at a hospital. He had a sister in Pennsylvania. Frank said he found him years later.””

Margaret looked at the letter.

“Frank knew who he was?””

Helen nodded.

“He said the man had agreed to let Catherine grow up with a family that could protect her.””

Daniel sat down.

“So Frank and Margaret adopted her.””

Helen looked at Margaret.

“Yes. But there was a problem.””

“What problem?””

Helen's eyes filled.

“Thomas found out.””

The room went quiet.

Helen continued.

“He threatened to expose the adoption. He said he'd tell everyone Frank had stolen a child. Frank was afraid Thomas would use the courts to take Catherine away.””

Margaret felt her stomach tighten.

“Where is she?””

Helen looked toward the locket.

“I don't know.””

Peter examined the letter again.

“There's a date and a reference number at the bottom. This may connect to an adoption agency.””

Ethan took a photograph of the document.

“I'll see what I can find.””

Margaret looked at him.

“Please.””

For the next hour, Peter made calls while Ethan examined the paperwork. Marcus stayed near Daniel, who seemed unable to decide whether he was angry, relieved, or terrified.

Finally, Ethan looked up.

“I found something.””

Everyone turned.

“The adoption agency closed in 1998, but its records were transferred to a county archive. There's a sealed file under Frank's name.””

Peter nodded.

“We'll need the proper authorization.””

Margaret reached into her purse and removed her identification.

“Then let's get it.””

Peter hesitated.

“Margaret, we should consider what this means. If Catherine is legally your daughter, she may have rights under Frank's estate documents.””

Margaret looked at him.

“I don't care about her rights to money.””

Her voice became firm.

“I want to know whether she's alive.””

Daniel reached for her hand.

“Then we'll find her.””

A little later, Ethan's phone rang.

He answered, listened, and slowly sat back.

“What is it?”” Marcus asked.

Ethan covered the microphone.

“The archive found the file.””

Peter took the phone.

“This is Peter Walsh. I'm acting on behalf of Margaret Whitmore.””

He listened.

Then his expression changed.

“Are you certain?””

Another pause.

“Yes. Please send the information through the official channel.””

He ended the call.

Margaret stood.

“What did they say?””

Peter looked at her.

“The adoption was finalized in August 1980. Catherine was given a new legal name.””

“What name?””

Peter glanced at the document.

“Catherine Whitmore became Catherine Bell.””

Daniel frowned.

“Bell?””

Peter nodded.

“Her adoptive parents were listed as Thomas Bell and his wife.””

Margaret felt the room tilt.

Thomas hadn't merely kept Catherine's existence secret.

He had raised her.

He had taken Helen's daughter and placed her inside his own household.

Margaret whispered, “He took all of them.””

Then Ethan noticed something on the final page.

A signature.

He turned the document around.

“Margaret, look.””

The adoptive mother's signature was missing.

Only Thomas Bell had signed.

Peter's face hardened.

“This adoption may have been improperly authorized.””

And beneath the signature was a note written in a different hand:

Child transferred to private residence. Biological mother not informed.

Margaret stared at the words.

Thomas hadn't just hidden her daughter.

May you like

He had stolen her.

And somewhere in the world, Catherine might still believe Thomas Bell was her father.
