Calm

Chapter 9: The Truth Behind The Person I Trusted Most

For a moment, I couldn’t move.

I couldn’t breathe.

I couldn’t even process what I was seeing.

Because my mind kept trying to reject the truth standing in front of me.

The person in the doorway.

The person Abigail had been afraid of.

The person who had been hiding behind kindness and loyalty.

Was someone I had trusted with my entire life.

My uncle Richard moved slightly in front of me.

Not because he wanted to protect himself.

Because he was trying to protect me.

That told me everything.

“You came.””

The voice was calm.

Too calm.

I knew that voice.

I had heard it thousands of times.

At family dinners.

At business meetings.

During holidays.

During moments when I thought I was surrounded by people who loved me.

My hands tightened into fists.

“Ethan.””

He stepped fully into the light.

My former business partner.

My friend.

The man I trusted enough to leave my company in his hands when I was struggling after Abigail’s death.

He looked completely different from the person I remembered.

Not because his appearance changed.

Because the mask was gone.

“I was hoping we could talk without all this drama.””

I stared at him.

“Drama?””

My voice shook.

“You’re the one who followed my wife.””

Ethan sighed.

“I knew Richard would tell you eventually.””

Richard’s face hardened.

“You should have told him years ago.””

Ethan looked at him.

“You had your chance.””

“I was wrong.””

“Yes.””

Ethan smiled slightly.

“That’s what everyone says when it’s too late.””

I stepped forward.

“Did you kill Abigail?””

The question filled the warehouse.

Ethan didn’t answer immediately.

And that silence was worse than anything.

“I didn’t plan for that night to happen.””

My stomach turned.

Not a denial.

A carefully chosen sentence.

“You didn’t plan it?””

“No.””

“Then what did you plan?””

He looked at me.

“I planned to fix a problem.””

“A problem?””

“My problem.””

I stared.

The man standing in front of me was not confused.

Not desperate.

He was calm.

Like he had spent years preparing this conversation.

“What did Abigail find?””

Ethan looked away.

“She found things she wasn’t supposed to find.””

“Money.””

“Yes.””

“Your theft.””

“Yes.””

“Your partnership with Celeste.””

His expression changed slightly.

Just enough.

“You know about that.””

“I know enough.””

Ethan laughed softly.

“No, Nolan.””

He stepped closer.

“You know pieces.””

“Then tell me the whole story.””

For a moment, he was quiet.

Then he said:

“Your wife was smarter than you thought.””

The words made my chest tighten.

“She saw patterns.””

Ethan continued.

“She noticed missing money. She noticed strange transactions. She noticed people changing behavior.””

His eyes moved to me.

“She noticed me.””

I said nothing.

“She also noticed Celeste.””

The mention of her name felt like another wound.

“How long?””

Ethan looked confused.

“How long what?””

“How long were you both using me?””

He smiled sadly.

“That’s the thing, Nolan.””

His voice lowered.

“It wasn’t supposed to be like that.””

I almost laughed.

“Of course.””

“I’m serious.””

“You stole from me.””

“Yes.””

“You lied to me.””

“Yes.””

“You helped destroy my marriage.””

He looked at the ground.

“I didn’t destroy your marriage.””

My eyes narrowed.

“What?””

“Your marriage was already falling apart.””

The anger hit instantly.

“Don’t talk about Abigail.””

“I’m not insulting her.””

“You are.””

“No.””

Ethan looked at me.

“I’m telling you the truth.””

I stepped closer.

“The truth is you betrayed my family.””

Ethan didn’t react.

Instead, he looked toward the envelope in my hand.

“You found Abigail’s letter.””

I froze.

“How do you know about that?””

He smiled.

“Because I helped her write it.””

The words made no sense.

“What?””

Ethan looked at Richard.

Then back at me.

“Abigail was trying to expose me.””

“Yes.””

“But before she did, she tried to understand why.””

My heart slowed.

“What are you saying?””

“She didn’t immediately believe I was guilty.””

I remembered Abigail.

That sounded like her.

She always searched for explanations.

“She contacted me.””

“When?””

“A week before she died.””

My hands tightened.

“She met with you?””

“Yes.””

“And you admitted it?””

“No.””

“Then what happened?””

Ethan looked away.

“She asked me why.””

A strange sadness crossed his face.

“Not how much. Not how long.””

“Why.””

I hated that part of me understood.

Abigail always cared about the reason behind people’s actions.

“She wanted to know why someone she trusted would betray her.””

I looked at him.

“And what did you say?””

Ethan was silent.

Then:

“I told her I was tired of watching people like you have everything.””

The words disgusted me.

“People like me?””

“Yes.””

He looked at me.

“People who were born into opportunity.””

I shook my head.

“You were my partner.””

“I was your employee.””

“No.””

“Yes.””

His voice became sharper.

“You never saw the difference.””

I stared.

Because this wasn’t just about money.

This was resentment.

Years of it.

“You hated me.””

“No.””

“Then what?””

Ethan looked at me.

“I hated that I needed you.””

The silence was heavy.

“I built half that company.””

“Yes.””

“I worked just as hard.””

“Yes.””

“But when people talked about success, they talked about Nolan Voss.””

I shook my head.

“That doesn’t justify anything.””

“No.””

He nodded.

“It doesn’t.””

For the first time, he looked tired.

“I know.””

Then why?

The question stayed in my mind.

But before I could ask, my phone rang.

Detective Harris.

I answered.

“Nolan.””

Her voice was urgent.

“Where are you?””

I looked at Ethan.

“Why?””

“Because Celeste is missing.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

“She left the city.””

“Why?””

“We don’t know.””

I looked at Ethan.

He didn’t look surprised.

That terrified me.

“Does Ethan know?””

A pause.

“Nolan…”

“What?””

“We found evidence connecting Celeste to the financial fraud.””

I closed my eyes.

Another betrayal.

But then Detective Harris continued.

“And we found something else.””

“What?””

“Someone accessed Abigail’s old medical records.””

My blood ran cold.

“Who?””

She hesitated.

“Celeste.””

I looked at Ethan.

“Why?””

Detective Harris lowered her voice.

“We don’t know yet.””

I ended the call.

The warehouse became silent.

“Where is she going?””

Ethan didn’t answer.

I grabbed his jacket.

“Where?””

He looked at me.

And for the first time, he looked afraid.

“She’s going after Nora.””

My blood turned cold.

“What did you say?””

Ethan pulled away.

“I said she’s going after Nora.””

“Why?””

His face changed.

Because he knew something.

Something worse.

“Because Abigail found out the reason Celeste got close to you.””

I stared.

“What reason?””

Ethan swallowed.

“She wasn’t trying to become your wife.””

I felt my chest tighten.

“Then what?””

He looked at me.

“She was trying to get custody.””

The world went silent.

“What?””

“She wanted Nora.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Ethan looked away.

“Because Abigail changed her will.””

My mind raced.

“Changed it how?””

“She left everything for Nora.””

I already knew that.

“What does that have to do with Celeste?””

Ethan’s answer came quietly.

“She needed to become Nora’s legal guardian.””

I felt sick.

“She needed me.””

“Yes.””

“She needed my trust.””

“Yes.””

“She needed Abigail gone.””

Ethan didn’t answer.

He didn’t need to.

The truth was already there.

I released him.

My hands were shaking.

“Where is Nora?””

The question came out immediately.

Because suddenly, nothing else mattered.

Not Ethan.

Not Celeste.

Not the money.

My daughter.

Ethan looked at me.

“At your house.””

I grabbed my phone.

I called.

No answer.

Again.

No answer.

A third time.

Nothing.

Fear started spreading through me.

I called the house manager.

She answered immediately.

“Mr. Voss?””

“Where is Nora?””

Silence.

That was wrong.

“Where is my daughter?””

Her voice trembled.

“Sir…”

“What happened?””

“I thought she was with you.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

“She left with Ms. Celeste.””

Everything went quiet.

“When?””

“About twenty minutes ago.””

I felt like I couldn’t breathe.

“Did Nora want to go?””

The woman hesitated.

“No.””

My vision blurred.

“What did she say?””

“She said…”

A pause.

“She said, ‘Daddy told me never to go anywhere without him.’”

I closed my eyes.

My daughter knew.

She knew something was wrong.

And still, someone had taken her.

I looked at Ethan.

“Where would she go?””

His face had gone pale.

Because he knew.

“She’ll take her somewhere Abigail knew.””

“What?””

“The place Abigail kept her final backup.””

I stepped closer.

“Where?””

Ethan looked toward the exit.

“The old family lake house.””

My heart dropped.

The place Abigail loved.

The place where we spent our first anniversary.

The place where Nora learned to walk.

The place filled with memories.

I ran.

Because for three years, I had been searching for the truth.

But now I understood something.

The truth didn’t matter if I lost the person Abigail died trying to protect.

My daughter.

And as I reached my car, my phone received one final message.

From Celeste.

I looked down.

Only one sentence.

You should have listened when Abigail warned you.

Then another message appeared.

A picture.

Nora.

Standing inside the old lake house.

Holding Abigail’s necklace.

May you like

And behind her…

A locked door.
