Chapter 8: The Person Abigail Trusted Before She Died

The warehouse smelled like rust, dust, and old rain.

Every step I took echoed across the empty space.

I hated that I came alone.

Every logical thought in my mind told me it was reckless.

A stranger had contacted me.

A stranger had asked me to come to an abandoned building.

A stranger who somehow knew details about Abigail’s investigation.

But after three years of lies, I had learned something.

Sometimes the truth didn’t come to you in safe places.

Sometimes you had to walk into the darkness to find it.

I kept one hand inside my coat pocket.

Not because I wanted a fight.

Because I needed to feel like I still had control.

The lights above me flickered.

Then turned on.

And I saw him.

My heart stopped.

“Dad?””

The word came out before I could stop it.

Standing twenty feet away was my father’s younger brother.

My uncle.

Richard Voss.

The man who had raised me after my father died.

The man who attended my wedding.

The man who held Nora when she was born.

The man Abigail trusted.

The man I never once considered part of this.

He looked older than I remembered.

Tired.

Broken.

Like someone who had spent years carrying something too heavy.

“Nolan.””

His voice shook.

I stared at him.

“You sent the messages?””

He nodded.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

He looked away.

“Because I should have done it three years ago.””

Anger moved through me.

“That’s not an answer.””

“I know.””

“Then give me one.””

Richard took a slow breath.

“Because Abigail was right.””

The words hit me.

“About what?””

“About everything.””

I stepped closer.

“Everything?””

He nodded.

“Ethan. The money. Celeste. The accident.””

My chest tightened.

“You knew?””

“Yes.””

The answer was simple.

Too simple.

I felt something break inside me.

“You knew my wife was in danger?””

His face changed.

Pain.

Real pain.

“I knew something was wrong.””

“That’s not the same thing.””

“No.””

He looked at me.

“It isn’t.””

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

His eyes filled.

“Because I was a coward.””

The honesty surprised me.

But it didn’t excuse him.

“You watched me mourn her.””

“I know.””

“You watched me believe she died because of bad luck.””

“I know.””

“You watched me build a life with someone who might have betrayed her.””

His face dropped.

“I know.””

I wanted to yell.

I wanted to demand answers.

But there was something about seeing him admit it that made the anger heavier.

Because he wasn’t fighting.

He wasn’t defending himself.

He looked like a man who had already punished himself for years.

“What happened?””

Richard walked toward an old table.

He placed a folder on it.

“Abigail discovered Ethan was stealing from your company.””

I nodded.

“I know.””

“But she didn’t discover it first.””

I frowned.

“What?””

Richard opened the folder.

“She came to me.””

My heart slowed.

“When?””

“Two months before she died.””

“Why?””

“Because she found something strange in the company records.””

He pulled out documents.

“Your financial system had been altered.””

I looked at the papers.

“What kind of alterations?””

“Someone created access points.””

“For who?””

Richard looked at me.

“For someone who wasn’t supposed to have access.””

“Ethan?””

“Yes.””

I looked through the documents.

“But Ethan couldn’t do this alone.””

Richard didn’t answer.

That silence told me enough.

“Who helped him?””

He looked down.

“Nolan…”

“Who?””

Richard closed his eyes.

“Celeste.””

The name still hurt.

Even after everything.

I hated that it still hurt.

“How?””

“She provided information.””

“What information?””

“Your schedule.””

My stomach tightened.

“Why?””

“So Ethan knew when you wouldn’t be watching.””

I stepped back.

“No.””

Richard looked at me.

“I wanted to believe it wasn’t true too.””

“How did Abigail find out?””

“She noticed money movements.””

“Like the police found.””

“Yes.””

“She confronted Ethan?””

“No.””

“Why?””

“Because she knew confronting him would make him hide everything.””

Richard handed me another paper.

“She started gathering evidence.””

I looked down.

It was a list.

Dates.

Times.

Names.

My eyes stopped.

Celeste.

Ethan.

And one more name.

Richard.

I looked up.

“You were on this list.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because Abigail didn’t know if she could trust me.””

The answer hurt.

“Could she?””

Richard looked away.

“No.””

The word was quiet.

But it carried years of guilt.

“What did you do?””

He sat down.

“I made a mistake.””

“What mistake?””

“I told Celeste about Abigail’s investigation.””

My body went cold.

“You what?””

“I thought she deserved to know.””

“Why?””

“Because I believed Celeste was innocent.””

I laughed bitterly.

“You believed the wrong person.””

“Yes.””

Richard looked at me.

“I did.””

“What happened after you told her?””

“Abigail found out.””

“And?””

“She was furious.””

“What did she say?””

Richard’s voice broke.

“She told me I had just put her life at risk.””

Silence.

I looked away.

Because suddenly, I understood.

Abigail wasn’t afraid because she didn’t know who was involved.

She was afraid because people she trusted kept making choices that put her in danger.

“What happened the night she died?””

Richard looked down.

“She was supposed to meet me.””

“When?””

“The night of the accident.””

I froze.

“She was coming to you?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“She had something.””

“What?””

“The original documents proving Ethan’s theft.””

My heart raced.

“The blue folder.””

Richard nodded.

“She called it the insurance.””

“Where is it?””

His expression changed.

“It disappeared.””

“Who had access?””

Richard looked at me.

“After the accident?””

“Yes.””

He hesitated.

“Celeste.””

I looked away.

The truth was becoming impossible to avoid.

“She was at the scene?””

“No.””

“Then how?””

“Because after Abigail died, Celeste came to your house before anyone else.””

I frowned.

“That’s impossible.””

“No.””

Richard shook his head.

“She told everyone she came to support you.””

My mind went back.

The funeral.

The first week.

Celeste always being there.

Helping.

Organizing.

Comforting.

I thought it was kindness.

Now it felt like opportunity.

“What else?””

Richard reached into the folder.

He pulled out a small envelope.

My name was written on it.

My hands started shaking.

“Where did you get this?””

“Abigail gave it to me.””

“Why?””

“She told me if anything happened to her, I should give it to you when the time was right.””

I stared.

“You waited three years.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because she told me not to give it to you until you were ready.””

I almost laughed.

“Ready?””

Richard looked at me.

“She knew you would destroy yourself trying to find the truth.””

“She knew me.””

“Yes.””

My throat tightened.

More than anyone.

Richard pushed the envelope toward me.

I opened it.

Inside was a letter.

Another one.

My wife’s handwriting.

Nolan,

If Richard gives you this, it means the truth is already coming out.

I closed my eyes.

She knew.

She knew this day might happen.

I continued.

I need you to understand something.

The person who hurt me did not do it because they hated me.

They did it because they wanted something I had.

My family.

My life.

My daughter.

My breath caught.

The letter continued.

But the person who betrayed me is not the only person responsible.

Someone helped them.

Someone opened the door.

Someone made it possible.

My hands tightened.

Abigail had always been fair.

Even when she was hurt.

Even when she was afraid.

She didn’t just want revenge.

She wanted the truth.

The next line destroyed me.

Nolan, if you are reading this, do not look for the person who caused my death first.

Look for the person who benefited from it.

I stared.

Who benefited?

Then the answer came.

Celeste.

But Abigail wasn’t finished.

The next paragraph made my heart stop.

Because the person who benefited most was not the person you think.

I frowned.

Not Celeste?

I kept reading.

The person who gained the most power after I was gone was the person who controlled your grief.

The person who controlled your home.

The person who controlled access to Nora.

My hands went numb.

A person who controlled access to Nora.

Only one person came to mind.

But it couldn’t be.

No.

I looked at Richard.

“Who knew about this letter?””

“Nobody.””

“Who knew Abigail was meeting you?””

“Nobody.””

“Who knew about the blue folder?””

He hesitated.

Then said:

“Three people.””

I looked at him.

“Who?””

Richard’s face became serious.

“Abigail.””

A pause.

“Me.””

Another pause.

“And the person who was following her.””

My heart stopped.

“Someone followed her?””

Richard nodded.

“Yes.””

“Who?””

He looked toward the warehouse entrance.

Suddenly, his expression changed.

Fear.

Real fear.

“Nolan…”

A sound came from behind us.

A door closing.

We both turned.

Someone was standing in the darkness.

Watching.

Richard stepped in front of me.

“Who is that?””

No answer.

The person slowly walked forward.

The lights flickered.

And then I saw the face.

My blood went cold.

Because it wasn’t Ethan.

It wasn’t Celeste.

It wasn’t a stranger.

It was someone who had been part of my life every single day.

Someone who had held my daughter.

Someone Abigail trusted.

Someone I had never questioned.

Richard whispered:

“Nolan…”

His voice broke.

“That’s the person Abigail was trying to protect you from.””

The figure stepped into the light.

And I realized the most terrifying truth.

May you like

The person who destroyed my family…

Was the person I had invited into it.
