Chapter 7: The Message Abigail Hid From Everyone
I didn’t open the flash drive immediately.
That surprised even me.
Three years ago, I would have torn it open without hesitation.
I would have needed answers.
I would have demanded the truth.
But now?
Now I was afraid.
Not of what I would discover.
I was afraid of what I already suspected.
Because every secret I uncovered led to another door.
And behind every door was another piece of my life I no longer recognized.
I sat in my car outside Mae’s apartment, the flash drive resting in my palm.
A tiny piece of plastic.
That was all.
But somehow it felt heavier than anything I had ever held.
Abigail had touched this.
She had created this message.
She had known she might not be alive when I saw it.
That thought hurt more than anything else.
My wife had spent her final days preparing for a future without her.
A future where I would have to raise Nora alone.
A future where she trusted strangers more than the people closest to us.
I connected the drive to my laptop.
A single file appeared.
ABIGAIL_FINAL.
My hands stopped moving.
Final.
Not last.
Not important.
Final.
Like she knew.
Like somewhere deep inside, she knew there might not be another chance.
I clicked.
The screen went black.
Then Abigail appeared.
My breath disappeared.
It was the first time I had seen her face in motion in three years.
Not photographs.
Not memories.
Her.
Her eyes.
Her smile.
The tiny expression she made whenever she was trying not to cry.
For several seconds, she just looked into the camera.
Then she whispered:
“Nolan.””
I covered my mouth.
Hearing my name from her lips almost destroyed me.
“I don’t know when you will see this.””
She paused.
“And I’m sorry.””
My eyes burned.
She looked tired.
Not physically.
Emotionally.
Like someone carrying something too heavy for too long.
“If you’re watching this, it means I was right to be afraid.””
She took a deep breath.
“But before anything else, I need you to know something.””
She smiled sadly.
“I loved you.””
I closed my eyes.
The pain came back instantly.
Every memory.
Every morning.
Every laugh.
Every ordinary moment I thought I would have forever.
“I loved you more than anything.””
Her voice shook.
“And I loved Nora more than my own life.””
A tear slipped down my face.
“I know you’re probably angry.””
She looked directly into the camera.
“You should be.””
A small pause.
“But please don’t waste your anger on finding someone to blame before you protect our daughter.””
My body stiffened.
There it was.
Again.
Nora.
Everything always came back to Nora.
“What happened to me is not the most important thing.””
Abigail looked down.
“That’s what I need you to understand.””
She leaned closer.
“The people who hurt others rarely start by attacking them.””
The video paused briefly.
Then continued.
“They start by making themselves necessary.””
My heart started pounding.
I thought about Celeste.
About how quickly she became part of our lives.
How she was always there when I needed someone.
How she became the person I depended on after Abigail died.
Abigail continued.
“They become the person you call when you’re scared.””
A pause.
“The person who helps you when you’re weak.””
Another pause.
“The person you trust because they were there during your worst moment.””
I stared at the screen.
The words felt like they were cutting directly through me.
“Sometimes the most dangerous people are not strangers.””
Abigail looked away.
“They are the people who know exactly what you need.””
The video went quiet.
Then she said:
“Nolan, I need you to check one thing.””
A document appeared beside her.
“The night of the accident, my car was not the only vehicle involved.””
I froze.
“What?””
The recording continued.
“The police report is incomplete.””
My breathing changed.
“I found evidence that someone followed me.””
My hands tightened.
“Someone who knew where I was going.””
I looked at the screen.
My mind raced.
“If something happens to me, do not trust the first explanation.””
Abigail swallowed.
“Especially if someone tells you it was just bad luck.””
The video ended.
I sat there for almost a minute without moving.
Then I watched it again.
And again.
Every word.
Every expression.
Every hesitation.
I noticed something.
Something I missed the first time.
Abigail kept looking toward the left side of the camera.
Like she wasn’t alone.
I stopped the video.
I rewound.
I watched.
There.
A shadow.
A movement.
Someone was there.
I immediately grabbed my phone.
I called Mae.
She answered after one ring.
“Yes?””
“Where did Abigail record this?””
Silence.
Then:
“You saw it.””
“Where?””
Mae hesitated.
“Nolan…”
“Where?””
Her voice became quiet.
“Her office.””
I frowned.
“But the video was recorded at night.””
“Yes.””
“Why was she in her office?””
Mae didn’t answer.
“Mae.””
“She went there because she believed someone had entered the house.””
My stomach dropped.
“What?””
“She found something missing.””
“What?””
“A file.””
“What file?””
Mae whispered:
“The one containing the original ownership records of your company.””
I went cold.
The company.
Everything connected back to the company.
Money.
Ethan.
Abigail’s investigation.
The accident.
All of it.
“What did she do?””
“She contacted me.””
“When?””
“The night before she died.””
I closed my eyes.
“What did she say?””
Mae was quiet.
Then:
“She said, ‘If Nolan asks about the blue folder, tell him the truth.’”
“The blue folder?””
“Yes.””
I looked around my car.
“Where is it?””
“I don’t know.””
“You don’t know?””
“No.””
I heard something in her voice.
Fear.
“Mae.””
She finally said:
“Because it disappeared after Abigail died.””
I felt a cold wave move through me.
Someone had taken it.
Someone had removed evidence.
Someone had cleaned up after Abigail was gone.
And I had been too broken to notice.
I drove straight home.
The mansion looked different.
Not because anything changed.
Because I had changed.
Every hallway felt like it held a secret.
Every room felt like it remembered something I didn’t.
I went directly to Abigail’s old office.
The door had been closed for three years.
Nobody entered.
Not even me.
My hand hovered over the handle.
For a moment, I almost turned away.
Then I remembered Abigail’s face.
Protect Nora.
I opened the door.
The room smelled old.
Dust.
Paper.
Memories.
Everything was exactly how she left it.
Her chair.
Her books.
Her desk.
The small plant near the window that had died months after she was gone.
I walked slowly inside.
I searched everything.
Drawers.
Shelves.
Cabinets.
Nothing.
Then I noticed something.
The bookshelf.
One section was cleaner than the others.
Like something had been moved recently.
I pulled the books away.
Behind them was a small compartment.
Empty.
Except for one thing.
A note.
My hands shook as I opened it.
The handwriting was Abigail’s.
Nolan,
If you found this, then you finally looked where I hoped you would.
I continued reading.
I know you want answers.
But answers can be dangerous when you don’t know who else is searching.
My heart beat faster.
There is one person who knows everything.
Not Ethan.
Not Celeste.
Someone closer.
I stopped.
Closer?
Who could be closer?
The next line made my blood run cold.
Someone who has been protecting the person who betrayed us.
I read it again.
Then again.
Protecting the person who betrayed us.
The note continued.
I wanted to believe I was wrong.
I wanted to believe love was stronger than fear.
But if you are reading this, I was wrong.
A sound came from behind me.
I turned.
The office door was open.
Nobody was there.
But I knew I had closed it.
I stepped into the hallway.
“Hello?””
No answer.
Then my phone vibrated.
Unknown number.
A message.
Do not trust Mae.
I stared at the screen.
Another message appeared.
She was never hired by accident.
My heart started pounding.
Then a third message.
She came to your house because Abigail asked her to.
I froze.
Because that wasn’t a warning.
It was a confession.
Someone knew.
Someone had been watching.
I typed:
Who is this?
The reply came immediately.
Someone who knows what Abigail found.
I stared.
Then another message.
Meet me alone if you want the truth.
A location appeared.
An abandoned warehouse outside the city.
I knew better.
Every instinct told me not to go.
But another part of me knew something else.
Someone wanted me afraid.
Someone wanted me confused.
And the only way to end this was to stop running.
I grabbed my coat.
Before leaving, I looked upstairs.
At Nora’s room.
My daughter was the reason Abigail fought.
The reason Mae stayed.
The reason every secret existed.
I whispered:
“I’ll protect you.””
Then I walked outside.
I didn’t know who sent the messages.
I didn’t know if it was a trap.
But I knew one thing.
When I arrived at the warehouse, I was not alone.
Someone had been waiting.
And when the lights turned on…
I saw the person who had been hiding the truth for three years.
Not Celeste.
Not Ethan.
May you like
Someone I never suspected.
Someone from my own family.
