Chapter 3: The Secret My Wife Took To Her Grave
I didn’t sleep that night.
Not because I was angry.
Anger would have been easier.
I stayed awake because my entire reality had started breaking apart piece by piece, and I was terrified of what I would find underneath.
Every memory I had with Celeste suddenly looked different.
Every smile.
Every promise.
Every conversation.
My mind kept replaying moments I had ignored.
Small moments.
The kind people dismiss because they seem meaningless.
The way Celeste became irritated whenever Nora mentioned Abigail.
The way she avoided old family photos.
The way she always changed the subject whenever I talked about the past.
I had called those things jealousy.
Insecurity.
Normal relationship problems.
But what if they were warnings?
What if my instincts had been trying to tell me something for years?
I sat in the living room with the old photograph in my hand.
Mae had left an hour earlier.
She didn’t want to stay.
She said she had already caused enough damage.
I told her she hadn’t caused anything.
But she only smiled sadly.
“Sometimes telling the truth feels like destroying someone’s life,” she had said.
Then she walked away.
And I hated that I understood what she meant.
Because my life had been destroyed.
Just not by her.
The front door opened.
I looked up.
Celeste walked in.
She had changed clothes.
The white engagement dress was gone.
Now she wore a simple black sweater and jeans.
For a second, she looked like the woman I knew.
The woman who used to drink coffee with me on Sunday mornings.
The woman who laughed when Nora spilled cereal everywhere.
The woman I thought I loved.
Then I remembered the ring.
And the image disappeared.
“You’re still awake.””
Her voice was soft.
I didn’t answer.
She looked at the photograph on the table.
Her face changed.
Only slightly.
But enough.
“You showed him.””
I stood.
“What?””
She looked toward the door.
“Mae.””
My chest tightened.
“You already knew she had this?””
Celeste stayed silent.
That was becoming her answer too often.
“Celeste.””
She sighed.
“Not everything is what you think.””
“That’s exactly what everyone says when they don’t want to tell the truth.””
She looked hurt.
“Do you really think I would hurt Nora?””
The question caught me.
Because it was the right question.
And the worst part was that I didn’t know anymore.
“I think I don’t know you as well as I thought I did.””
Her eyes filled instantly.
The old version of me would have rushed forward.
I would have apologized.
I would have held her.
I would have tried to fix everything.
But tonight, I stayed where I was.
And she noticed.
That hurt her more than any accusation.
“What happened to us?””
I looked away.
“I’m trying to figure that out.””
She sat down slowly.
“You believe her.””
“I believe what I saw.””
“She manipulated the situation.””
“Did she manipulate the engraving?””
Celeste froze.
There it was again.
That reaction.
The one she couldn’t hide.
“I can explain.””
“Then explain.””
She looked down.
For a long moment, she said nothing.
Then she whispered:
“I knew Abigail.””
The room went silent.
I stared at her.
“What?””
“I knew your wife.””
I felt like the floor moved.
“How?””
Celeste looked at the old photograph.
“She was my cousin.””
The words hit me harder than I expected.
“Your cousin?””
“Yes.””
“Then why did you never tell me?””
Her eyes became glassy.
“Because I didn’t think it mattered.””
I almost couldn’t believe what I was hearing.
“Your cousin was my wife.””
“She was complicated.””
My jaw tightened.
“Don’t.””
Celeste looked up.
“Don’t what?””
“Don’t talk about Abigail like she’s the problem.””
Her expression changed.
“I’m not.””
“You just called her complicated.””
“She was.””
I stepped back.
“Explain.””
Celeste took a deep breath.
“She made mistakes.””
“What mistakes?””
She looked away.
“Things you don’t know about.””
I laughed once.
A cold, empty sound.
“Interesting.””
“What?””
“Because everyone seems to know things about my wife except me.””
Celeste flinched.
I continued.
“I knew her for eight years.””
“She didn’t tell you everything.””
“And you did?””
Silence.
That was the answer.
I walked toward the window.
The mansion looked different at night.
The place I had built with Abigail.
The place where Nora took her first steps.
The place where I thought I had created safety.
Now every room felt like it was hiding something.
“What happened between you and Abigail?””
Celeste’s voice became quieter.
“We weren’t close.””
“But you knew her.””
“Yes.””
“Then why did you never mention her?””
She didn’t answer.
“Why did you never tell me you were related?””
“I thought bringing up the past would hurt you.””
“No.””
I turned around.
“You thought the truth would hurt you.””
Her face hardened.
“You don’t understand.””
“Then help me understand.””
She stood.
“Abigail wasn’t the person you think she was.””
I stared at her.
“Prove it.””
She looked shocked.
“What?””
“Prove it.””
I pointed toward the photograph.
“Show me.””
She hesitated.
That hesitation told me everything.
“You don’t have anything.””
“I have memories.””
“Memories can be changed.””
She looked angry now.
“You think I’m lying?””
“I think you’re hiding something.””
The silence between us felt endless.
Then Celeste walked toward a cabinet near the wall.
She opened it.
Inside were several old boxes.
My heart started beating faster.
“What are those?””
She didn’t answer.
She pulled out one small box.
Then another.
She placed them on the table.
“These belonged to Abigail.””
I stared.
“Why do you have them?””
She looked at me.
“Because after she died, her family divided her things.””
I frowned.
“You got them?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
She looked away.
“Because nobody else wanted them.””
That sounded wrong.
Everything sounded wrong.
“Open them.””
She hesitated.
Then opened the first box.
Inside were old letters.
Photos.
Small personal items.
Things that belonged to someone who was gone.
My throat tightened.
I reached for one photograph.
It was Abigail.
Pregnant.
Smiling.
Holding her stomach.
I remembered that day.
I remembered taking that photo.
I remembered telling her she looked beautiful.
She laughed because she said she felt enormous.
I had forgotten that memory.
Until now.
Then I saw something else.
A note.
Folded carefully.
My name was written on the outside.
Nolan.
My hands went cold.
I reached for it.
Celeste immediately grabbed my wrist.
“Don’t.””
The word came too quickly.
I looked at her.
“Why?””
She released me.
“I…”
She had no answer.
My heart sank.
“Why don’t you want me to read something written by my own wife?””
Celeste looked terrified.
Not angry.
Not defensive.
Terrified.
I took the note.
I opened it.
The handwriting was Abigail’s.
I knew it instantly.
My eyes moved across the page.
Nolan,
If you are reading this, something happened that stopped me from telling you myself.
My breathing changed.
The room disappeared.
I kept reading.
I need you to trust your instincts.
I need you to protect Nora.
And most importantly…
I need you to be careful who you let into our home.
My hand shook.
The note continued.
There is someone close to us who does not want you to know the truth.
Someone who has been waiting for the right moment.
I looked at Celeste.
She looked away.
I continued reading.
The ring was supposed to be yours.
Not because of the diamond.
Not because of the money.
Because it was proof.
Proof of a promise someone made to me.
A promise that if anything happened, Nora would be protected.
My eyes blurred.
Then I saw the final line.
The line that made my entire body go cold.
Nolan, if Celeste ever tells you I was unstable, remember this:
She is the reason I was afraid.
I lowered the paper.
I couldn’t speak.
Celeste’s face had gone pale.
“You weren’t supposed to find that.””
The sentence came quietly.
But I heard it.
Every word.
“You knew about this letter.””
She closed her eyes.
“I knew it existed.””
“How?””
She didn’t answer.
“How?””
Her voice cracked.
“Because Abigail gave it to me.””
I stared.
“She gave it to you?””
“Yes.””
“Why would she give you a letter accusing you?””
Celeste looked down.
And for the first time all night, she looked less like a villain.
She looked broken.
“I didn’t know what she wrote.””
I didn’t believe her.
Not completely.
“But you kept it.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
She looked at me.
“Because I was scared.””
The answer surprised me.
“Of what?””
Her eyes filled.
“Of losing everything.””
I waited.
She whispered:
“Because Abigail knew something about my family.””
I frowned.
“What?””
Celeste looked toward the stairs.
Toward Nora’s room.
Then back at me.
“Something that could destroy all of us.””
The room became cold.
“What did she know?””
Celeste didn’t answer.
Instead, she said something worse.
“Nolan…”
Her voice trembled.
“You need to ask Mae why she really came here.””
I froze.
“What?””
“Ask her why she waited three years before entering your house.””
My eyes narrowed.
“She told me she wanted to help Nora.””
Celeste shook her head.
“That’s not the whole story.””
“What is the whole story?””
She looked at the letter.
“At first, Mae wasn’t looking for you.””
A chill moved through me.
“Then who was she looking for?””
Celeste swallowed.
“Nora.””
I stared.
“That makes no sense.””
“It will.””
She stepped closer.
“Because Mae knows something about your daughter.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
Celeste’s voice dropped.
“Something Abigail never had time to tell you.””
I looked at the stairs.
At the room where my daughter slept.
Suddenly, every sound in the house felt louder.
The old wooden floor.
The wind against the windows.
My own heartbeat.
“What does Mae know?””
Celeste looked at me.
And said:
“She knows who Nora’s real protector was supposed to be.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
But Celeste didn’t stop.
“She also knows why Abigail was afraid to die.””
I stared at her.
“Tell me.””
Celeste looked toward the front door.
Toward the darkness outside.
Then whispered:
“Because the person who caused the accident that killed Abigail was never caught.””
My blood turned cold.
“What accident?””
Celeste looked back at me.
“The accident you were told was just bad luck.””
I couldn’t move.
Because suddenly, the one question I had buried for three years came rushing back.
May you like
The question I never allowed myself to ask.
What if Abigail’s death wasn’t an accident?
