Calm

Chapter 7: The Enemy Who Knew Everything

Nobody moved.

The darkness inside the dojo felt heavier than it should have.

Leo stood frozen, staring at the glowing screen of his phone.

YOU FOUND THE ROOM.

NOW I KNOW WHERE YOU ARE.

The words were simple.

But everyone in that room understood what they meant.

Someone was watching.

Someone knew.

Daniel moved first.

"Everyone away from the windows.""

His voice was calm, but Leo had never heard that tone before.

Not even during training.

It wasn't the voice of a teacher.

It was the voice of someone who had been in danger before.

Tyler immediately turned off the phone screens around him.

Brad looked confused.

"What is happening?""

Tyler ignored him.

"Did you bring anyone here?""

Brad looked offended.

"No.""

"Are you sure?""

Brad's expression hardened.

"Yes.""

Tyler stared at him for a moment, then nodded.

Leo noticed something.

Tyler trusted almost nobody.

But he trusted his brother.

At least a little.

Daniel moved toward the back entrance.

"Stay here.""

Leo looked at him.

"You're going outside?""

"I need to know if we're alone.""

Tyler grabbed his arm.

"No.""

Daniel looked at him.

"This is my dojo.""

"And that is exactly why you shouldn't go alone.""

For a moment, the two older men stared at each other.

Leo noticed the history between them.

Not friendship.

Not anymore.

Something more complicated.

Years of trust.

Years of regret.

Years of things never said.

Then a loud sound came from outside.

A car door closing.

Everyone went silent.

Brad looked toward the window.

"Someone is here.""

Leo's heart started beating faster.

Not from fear.

From realization.

All his life, he thought the biggest problems he would face were normal ones.

Grades.

College.

Finding his place.

He never imagined standing in a hidden room beneath a dojo while strangers searched for him because of his father's past.

The lights suddenly returned.

Everyone blinked.

The room looked exactly the same.

But nothing felt the same anymore.

Daniel slowly opened the door.

Nobody was there.

Only the empty street.

Then he looked down.

A small envelope sat on the ground.

Leo felt a chill.

Daniel picked it up.

"Don't.""

Leo stopped him.

"What?""

"That could be a trap.""

Daniel looked surprised.

For a second, nobody spoke.

Then Tyler gave a small nod.

"He learned.""

Leo looked at him.

"What?""

"Your father.""

Tyler looked at Leo.

"He taught you awareness.""

Leo didn't respond.

Because that was exactly what Daniel had always taught him.

Observe first.

React second.

Daniel carefully opened the envelope.

Inside was a photograph.

Everyone gathered around.

Leo looked at it.

And immediately recognized the person.

His father.

But this time, he wasn't alone.

Standing beside him was Victor Hale.

A younger version.

Both men looked calm.

Almost like friends.

On the back of the photo was a handwritten message.

YOU STILL THINK YOU KNOW YOUR FATHER.

Leo felt his stomach tighten.

Brad looked uncomfortable.

"Who sent that?""

Nobody answered.

Then Tyler said:

"Victor.""

Daniel shook his head.

"No.""

Tyler looked at him.

"Who else?""

Daniel stared at the photograph.

"Someone who wants us to believe Victor is behind this.""

Leo looked between them.

"So you're saying it might not be him?""

Daniel nodded.

"Victor is dangerous.""

A pause.

"But he isn't careless.""

Leo studied the message.

The person who sent it knew exactly what they were doing.

They wanted confusion.

Fear.

Distrust.

And it was working.

The next morning, Westbrook Academy was louder than ever.

The cafeteria fight had already made Leo famous.

Now something else had happened.

Someone had leaked another story.

This time, it wasn't about the fight.

It was about Leo's family.

Rumors spread quickly.

"His dad was involved with some secret group.""

"I heard Leo's been training since he was a kid.""

"Maybe that's why he acts weird.""

"Maybe he's dangerous.""

Leo heard everything.

He pretended not to.

But he did.

People always thought being quiet meant not listening.

They were wrong.

Emma found him near the library.

She looked worried.

"You need to see this.""

Leo looked at her.

"Another video?""

She shook her head.

"No.""

She handed him her phone.

A news article.

An old one.

The headline:

LOCAL BUSINESS OWNER MISSING AFTER INVESTIGATION.

Leo read the name.

Michael Carter.

His father.

His hands tightened around the phone.

"What is this?""

Emma looked at him.

"I found it this morning.""

"Where?""

"My brother helped.""

Leo immediately noticed.

"Noah.""

Emma nodded.

"He knows more than he told me.""

Leo gave the phone back.

"Everyone knows more than they tell me.""

Emma didn't argue.

Because she knew it was true.

"Leo...""

He looked at her.

"Your father disappeared twelve years ago.""

"Yes.""

"But the investigation was closed.""

Leo frowned.

"Why?""

"Because they said there wasn't enough evidence.""

"Evidence of what?""

Emma hesitated.

"That he didn't leave voluntarily.""

Leo felt cold.

Everyone had always told him the same story.

His father was gone.

A tragedy.

A mystery.

But nobody ever said someone might have taken him.

"Why didn't my mother tell me?""

Emma looked down.

"Maybe she was trying to protect you.""

Leo almost laughed.

That phrase again.

Protect.

Everyone used it.

But every secret had only made things worse.

After school, Leo went home.

His mother was in the kitchen when he entered.

She immediately knew.

Mothers always knew.

"What happened?""

Leo placed the old photograph on the table.

Her face changed.

Only for a second.

But Leo saw it.

"You know this picture.""

She sat down slowly.

"Where did you get it?""

"Answer me.""

His mother looked at the photograph.

Then closed her eyes.

"I hoped you would never see it.""

Leo felt his chest tighten.

"Why?""

"Because your father wanted you away from that world.""

"What world?""

She didn't answer.

Leo's patience finally broke.

"Everyone keeps saying that.""

His voice rose.

"Everyone keeps saying my father wanted to protect me, but nobody tells me what I need protecting from.""

His mother looked at him.

And he saw tears forming in her eyes.

"The truth.""

Leo froze.

She whispered:

"Your father discovered something he shouldn't have.""

"What?""

"A network of people who used power and fear to control others.""

Leo thought of Victor.

Tyler.

The files.

"He tried to stop them?""

She nodded.

"And they made sure he couldn't.""

Silence.

Leo looked away.

"Is he alive?""

The question came out before he could stop it.

His mother looked at him.

And that expression told him everything.

Not an answer.

But not a denial.

"Mom.""

She took a breath.

"I don't know.""

Leo stared.

"You don't know?""

"Your father made arrangements before he disappeared.""

"What kind of arrangements?""

She stood and walked to a cabinet.

From inside, she pulled out a small box.

She placed it on the table.

"I was told to give this to you only if someone from his past came looking.""

Leo looked at the box.

"Someone did.""

His mother nodded.

"Then you're ready.""

Leo opened it.

Inside was a flash drive.

And a handwritten note.

His father's handwriting.

Leo.

If you are reading this, then the past has found you.

Leo's breathing slowed.

The note continued.

Do not trust the people who claim to know the truth. Everyone has their own version.

His eyes moved down.

Find Daniel.

Trust Tyler only when he has no reason to lie.

And remember this:

The strongest person is not the one who wins every fight.

It is the one who knows what they are fighting for.

Leo stared at the words.

Then he noticed something.

A final sentence.

One he hadn't seen before.

Your enemy is closer than you think.

Leo slowly looked up.

His mother was staring at the flash drive.

"What?""

She whispered:

"I thought that was gone.""

Leo looked at her.

"What?""

She pointed.

"The symbol.""

On the flash drive was a small engraved mark.

A symbol.

One Leo had seen before.

On Victor Hale's files.

On the old documents.

And now here.

His father had left it behind.

A message.

A warning.

A connection.

Leo closed his hand around the flash drive.

For the first time, he understood.

His father wasn't asking him to discover the past.

He was asking him to finish something.

And somewhere out there, someone knew Leo had started.

The phone on the table vibrated.

Everyone froze.

A new message.

Unknown number.

Leo opened it.

A picture appeared.

It showed him.

Standing outside his house.

Taken only seconds earlier.

The message below said:

YOU'RE GETTING CLOSER.

BUT SO AM I.

Leo stared at the screen.

Then slowly looked toward the window.

May you like

Because this time, he wasn't wondering if someone was watching.

He knew they were.
