Calm

Chapter 3: The Brother Behind The Shadow

The night air felt colder than Leo expected.

He stepped onto the front porch and quietly closed the door behind him.

The street was empty.

Too empty.

The kind of empty that made every sound feel louder.

A distant dog barked somewhere in the neighborhood.

A streetlight flickered above the sidewalk.

The black SUV remained parked across the street, its windows dark enough that Leo couldn't see who was inside.

For several seconds, neither side moved.

Leo stood still.

Waiting.

Listening.

The old training instincts returned.

Not the part about fighting.

The part about awareness.

His instructor had always told him that the first mistake people made in dangerous situations was focusing only on the person in front of them.

Danger rarely came from one direction.

Leo looked around the street.

No movement.

No other cars.

No footsteps.

Then the driver's door opened.

A man stepped out.

He was tall.

Not as tall as Brad, but close.

Older.

Stronger.

He wore a black jacket and dark jeans, his hands resting casually at his sides.

But there was nothing casual about him.

Leo immediately knew.

Tyler Miller.

The older brother.

The name that had followed whispers through Westbrook Academy for years.

Tyler slowly walked across the street.

He didn't rush.

He didn't need to.

People like Tyler didn't hurry.

They expected the world to wait for them.

"You look different than I expected.""

Tyler stopped several feet away.

Leo didn't move.

"How did you expect me to look?""

Tyler studied him.

"Smaller.""

Leo almost smiled.

"Your brother probably said the same thing.""

That sentence changed Tyler's expression.

Only slightly.

But Leo noticed.

A small movement around the eyes.

A tiny reaction.

Tyler wasn't angry that Leo mentioned Brad.

He was angry because Leo understood something.

Brad had underestimated him.

Tyler looked toward the house.

"Your parents home?""

Leo didn't answer.

Tyler looked back.

"Relax.""

The word sounded strange coming from him.

"I didn't come here to hurt you.""

Leo kept his distance.

"Then why are you here?""

Tyler looked at the ground for a moment.

Then back at Leo.

"Because my brother called me.""

Leo waited.

"And?""

"And he told me what happened.""

Leo crossed his arms.

"So you're here because Brad lost a fight?""

Tyler's jaw tightened.

"No.""

His voice became quieter.

"I'm here because Brad has never looked that embarrassed in his life.""

The honesty surprised Leo.

For a moment, Tyler didn't look like the person everyone feared.

He looked like an older brother.

Someone disappointed.

Someone protective.

Then the expression disappeared.

"You made him look weak.""

Leo stared at him.

"He did that himself.""

A long silence followed.

Tyler stepped closer.

Leo immediately adjusted his stance.

Tyler noticed.

His eyes moved downward.

"You train.""

It wasn't a question.

Leo said nothing.

"Judo?""

Still nothing.

Tyler nodded slowly.

"Interesting.""

Leo watched him carefully.

"Are you going to fight me?""

Tyler looked almost amused.

"No.""

"Then why are you here?""

Tyler reached into his jacket pocket.

Leo's body tensed instantly.

But Tyler only pulled out his phone.

He unlocked the screen and showed Leo something.

A video.

Not the cafeteria fight.

Something else.

Leo looked closer.

It was security footage.

A parking lot.

Brad.

And three older students.

The video quality wasn't great, but Leo could clearly see Brad standing there.

Arguing.

Then Tyler paused it.

"Look.""

Leo stared.

"What am I looking at?""

"Brad didn't tell you everything.""

Tyler turned the phone toward himself.

"Because Brad doesn't like admitting when he needs help.""

Leo looked confused.

"You came here to show me a video of your brother?""

"I came here because you think this was just about lunch.""

Tyler's voice became serious.

"It wasn't.""

The wind moved through the trees.

Leo looked back at the screen.

"What happened?""

Tyler put the phone away.

"Someone has been targeting my family.""

Leo raised an eyebrow.

"Your family?""

"Yes.""

"Why would anyone target you?""

Tyler gave a humorless smile.

"That's the right question.""

Leo studied him.

"You expect me to believe that?""

"No.""

Tyler turned away.

"I expect you to be smart enough to understand that not everything is what it looks like.""

Before Leo could respond, another car slowly drove past the house.

Both of them noticed.

Tyler immediately became alert.

The change was instant.

The relaxed attitude disappeared.

His eyes followed the vehicle until it turned the corner.

Leo noticed.

"You weren't worried about me.""

Tyler looked back.

"What?""

"You were watching the street.""

Tyler said nothing.

Leo understood.

Tyler hadn't come looking for revenge.

He had come because he was expecting something else.

Someone else.

"Who are you afraid of?""

Tyler's face hardened.

"I'm not afraid of anyone.""

Leo looked at him.

"That wasn't my question.""

For the first time, Tyler looked genuinely irritated.

"You really are different.""

Leo shrugged.

"I hear that a lot.""

Tyler looked toward the house again.

"Stay away from this.""

Leo frowned.

"You came here and dragged me into it.""

"No.""

Tyler shook his head.

"You were already in it.""

The words stayed between them.

Because Leo knew they were true.

The moment Brad pushed him.

The moment everyone recorded it.

The moment Tyler saw the video.

Something had changed.

Tyler walked back toward the SUV.

Leo watched him.

"Tyler.""

He stopped.

Leo hesitated.

Then asked:

"Did Brad really tell you what happened?""

Tyler didn't turn around.

"No.""

"Why not?""

A few seconds passed.

Then Tyler answered.

"Because Brad doesn't want me to know he finally met someone he couldn't intimidate.""

Leo watched him get into the SUV.

Before closing the door, Tyler looked back.

"Leo.""

"Yeah?""

"Next time someone challenges you...""

Tyler paused.

"Make sure you know why.""

The SUV started.

Then disappeared into the darkness.

The next morning, Westbrook Academy felt like a completely different school.

Leo knew it the second he walked through the entrance.

People stared.

Not secretly.

Not quickly.

Openly.

Students stopped talking when he passed.

Some looked impressed.

Others looked nervous.

A few held up their phones, pretending they weren't recording.

Leo hated it.

He had spent years trying to avoid attention.

Now attention followed him everywhere.

At his locker, he found something unexpected.

A crowd.

Kyle and Mason stood there.

Leo stopped.

The two boys looked uncomfortable.

Like they had practiced what they wanted to say.

Kyle spoke first.

"Hey.""

Leo nodded.

"Hey.""

An awkward silence followed.

Finally Mason cleared his throat.

"About yesterday...""

Leo waited.

Kyle looked down.

"We were wrong.""

Leo didn't respond immediately.

The apology sounded strange coming from people who had laughed while his food was thrown onto the floor.

But maybe strange things happened when people saw someone they underestimated fight back.

"You don't have to apologize.""

Kyle looked surprised.

"We don't?""

"No.""

Leo closed his locker.

"But you should understand something.""

The two boys listened.

"Being around someone powerful doesn't make you powerful.""

Neither of them spoke.

Leo walked away.

Behind him, the hallway returned to its usual noise.

But one thing had changed.

People moved out of his way.

Not because they were afraid.

Not exactly.

Because they were finally seeing him.

At lunch, Leo sat alone.

That was how he preferred it.

Until Emma placed her tray across from him.

"You know everyone is talking about you, right?""

Leo looked up.

"I noticed.""

She smiled slightly.

"Tyler came to your house.""

Leo froze.

"How do you know that?""

Emma looked uncomfortable.

"Because Tyler isn't as invisible as he thinks.""

Leo lowered his voice.

"Who told you?""

"No one.""

She paused.

"I saw his car.""

Leo studied her.

"Emma.""

"What?""

"How much do you actually know?""

Her expression changed.

For the first time, Leo realized something.

Emma wasn't just a girl who happened to record the fight.

She had been watching.

Paying attention.

And maybe she knew more about the Miller family than she admitted.

Before he could ask another question, every phone in the cafeteria buzzed at the same time.

Hundreds of notifications.

Students immediately looked down.

The room went quiet.

Leo checked his phone.

A new video had been posted.

No title.

No description.

Just a thirty-second clip.

He pressed play.

The video showed the cafeteria.

His fight with Brad.

But this wasn't the same recording everyone had seen.

This angle was closer.

Someone had been standing only a few feet away.

Someone who shouldn't have been there.

Then the video ended.

A message appeared underneath.

THE QUIET KID ISN'T WHO YOU THINK HE IS.

Leo stared at the screen.

Emma looked worried.

"Leo...""

He didn't answer.

Because beneath the message was the name of the account that posted it.

Tyler Miller.

And suddenly Leo understood.

May you like

The fight in the cafeteria wasn't exposing his secret.

Someone was trying to create a new one.
