Chapter 5: The Truth Buried In The Past

The words didn't make sense.

At least, not at first.

Leo stood in the middle of the dojo, staring at Tyler Miller as if he had heard something impossible.

"My father?""

His voice came out quieter than he expected.

Tyler didn't answer immediately.

That silence was worse than any explanation.

Leo turned toward Daniel.

His instructor.

The person who had trained him for years.

The person who had always told him the truth.

Or at least, the person Leo believed had.

"You knew?""

Daniel looked away.

That single movement answered everything.

Leo felt something inside him shift.

Not anger.

Not yet.

Something deeper.

Disappointment.

"How long?""

Daniel sighed.

"Leo...""

"How long did you know?""

The room became painfully quiet.

The sound of rain tapping against the dojo windows filled the space between them.

Daniel looked older suddenly.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

Like he had been carrying something heavy for a long time.

"Since before you started training.""

Leo stared.

"Before?""

Daniel nodded.

"Your father brought you here.""

Leo froze.

"My father?""

"Yes.""

Leo laughed once, but there was no humor in it.

"That's impossible.""

Daniel didn't move.

"Why?""

"Because my father never came here.""

Leo had spent years believing that.

His father was just his father.

A quiet man.

A hardworking man.

Someone who left early every morning and came home tired every evening.

Someone who taught him kindness.

Patience.

Humility.

Not secrets.

Not hidden pasts.

Tyler stepped forward.

"He wasn't always that person.""

Leo looked at him.

"What does that mean?""

Tyler crossed his arms.

"It means everyone has a version of themselves they don't show the world.""

Leo shook his head.

"No.""

The word came out stronger.

"My father wasn't like that.""

Daniel looked at him.

"You are right.""

That surprised Leo.

"Then explain.""

Daniel took a deep breath.

"Your father was one of the most talented fighters I ever met.""

Leo said nothing.

"Not because he was the strongest.""

Daniel looked toward the mats.

"Because he understood control better than anyone.""

Those words felt familiar.

Too familiar.

Leo remembered every lesson.

Every correction.

Every time Daniel told him strength was meaningless without discipline.

"You're saying he learned from you?""

Daniel nodded.

"Yes.""

Leo looked between them.

"Then why didn't anyone tell me?""

Tyler answered.

"Because your father wanted it that way.""

Leo turned.

"Why?""

Tyler's expression became serious.

"Because he was trying to protect you.""

"From what?""

Nobody answered.

And Leo hated that.

Another secret.

Another missing piece.

He stepped closer to Tyler.

"You came to my house. You threatened me.""

Tyler shook his head.

"I warned you.""

"You sent a message saying I had to deal with you.""

"Because I needed you to understand this was bigger than a cafeteria fight.""

Leo looked at him.

"Then stop talking in circles.""

For a moment, Tyler looked impressed.

"You really are like him.""

Leo's eyes narrowed.

"Like who?""

"Your father.""

That sentence hit harder than Leo expected.

Tyler walked toward the center of the dojo.

"Your father and mine were friends once.""

Leo listened carefully.

"Before everything changed.""

"What changed?""

Tyler looked at Daniel.

The older man lowered his eyes.

Leo noticed.

"Everyone keeps looking at each other.""

His voice sharpened.

"Everyone knows something except me.""

Nobody spoke.

"So tell me.""

Leo looked directly at Tyler.

"What happened?""

Tyler was silent for several seconds.

Then he finally answered.

"Your father was involved in something dangerous.""

Leo's stomach tightened.

"What kind of thing?""

"A group.""

Daniel interrupted.

"Tyler.""

But Tyler continued.

"He helped train people.""

Leo frowned.

"Train people for what?""

Tyler looked at him.

"Protection.""

Leo waited.

"That's not the whole story.""

"No.""

Tyler admitted.

"It's not.""

The honesty bothered Leo more than a lie would have.

"What aren't you telling me?""

Tyler looked down.

"My father believed your father betrayed him.""

The room went silent.

Leo felt like the ground had moved.

"My father betrayed yours?""

Tyler nodded slowly.

"And after that, everything fell apart.""

Leo looked at Daniel.

"Is that true?""

Daniel didn't answer.

And that hurt more.

Because silence from someone you trust feels like confirmation.

Leo stepped backward.

"So all these years...""

His voice cracked slightly.

"You knew.""

Daniel looked at him.

"I knew pieces.""

"But you never told me.""

"I wanted to protect you.""

Leo laughed bitterly.

"Everyone keeps saying that.""

He looked around.

"Protect me from what?""

Nobody answered.

Then Leo's phone buzzed.

The sound cut through the tension.

He looked down.

A message.

Unknown number.

Not Tyler.

Not Brad.

A different number.

The message contained only a photo.

Leo opened it.

His entire body went still.

It was a picture of his father.

But not the father he remembered.

This photo showed a younger man.

Standing inside a dojo.

Beside another person.

Tyler's father.

And Daniel.

At the bottom of the image was a date.

Twenty years earlier.

Then another message appeared.

YOU DESERVE TO KNOW THE TRUTH.

Leo looked up.

"Who sent this?""

Tyler immediately looked at the phone.

His expression changed.

"Give me that.""

Leo pulled it back.

"No.""

Tyler stared at him.

"Leo.""

"No.""

For the first time, Tyler looked frustrated.

"That message changes things.""

"Good.""

Leo's voice became colder.

"Maybe now someone will finally explain.""

Tyler looked at Daniel.

Then back at Leo.

"Do you know who sent it?""

"No.""

Tyler's face became serious.

"But I do.""

Leo waited.

Tyler said one name.

And the moment he said it, Daniel's expression changed.

"Victor Hale.""

Leo didn't recognize the name.

But everyone else did.

Daniel immediately stood.

"That is impossible.""

Tyler looked at him.

"No.""

His voice was calm.

"It's exactly what I was afraid of.""

Leo looked confused.

"Who is Victor Hale?""

Nobody answered.

Tyler looked toward the door.

"Someone who wants the past reopened.""

A cold feeling moved through Leo.

The past.

Everyone kept talking about the past.

But Leo had spent his entire life in the present.

He had never cared about old fights.

Old rivalries.

Old secrets.

Until now.

"Why me?""

Tyler looked at him.

"Because you're the only person left who can prove what happened.""

Leo shook his head.

"I don't understand.""

Tyler stepped closer.

"Your father left something behind.""

"What?""

"A record.""

Leo frowned.

"What kind of record?""

"A record that could destroy someone.""

The rain outside grew heavier.

Leo stared at Tyler.

"Why are you telling me this?""

Tyler looked away.

For the first time, Leo saw something unexpected.

Regret.

"Because yesterday, I thought you were just another problem.""

Tyler looked back.

"But after watching you fight...""

He paused.

"I realized you were exactly what your father hoped you would become.""

Leo didn't know how to respond.

Because he wasn't sure if that was a compliment.

Or a warning.

Tyler moved toward the door.

"Find the truth before someone else finds you.""

Leo watched him leave.

But before Tyler stepped outside, he stopped.

"Leo.""

"What?""

Tyler looked back.

"Your father didn't disappear because he wanted to leave.""

A pause.

"He disappeared because he was running out of time.""

Then Tyler walked away.

The dojo door closed.

Leo stood frozen.

His entire life suddenly felt like a story someone else had written.

A story where everyone knew the ending except him.

Daniel approached slowly.

"Leo.""

Leo didn't look at him.

"Did my father really trust you?""

Daniel swallowed.

"Yes.""

"Then why did you lie?""

The question hurt more than anger.

Daniel looked down.

"Because your father made me promise.""

Leo finally turned.

"A promise?""

Daniel nodded.

"He told me that if the truth ever came out, it would mean you were ready.""

Leo looked at the picture on his phone.

His father.

Daniel.

Tyler's father.

A hidden past.

A mystery waiting.

"Am I ready?""

Daniel looked at him.

And for the first time, he didn't answer immediately.

"I don't know.""

That answer scared Leo more than anything else.

Because Daniel always knew what to say.

But now he didn't.

Outside, a car engine started.

Leo walked to the window.

A black SUV pulled away from the street.

Tyler was leaving.

But someone else was parked farther away.

Watching.

A different vehicle.

A different person.

Leo's phone buzzed again.

Another message.

This time:

YOU'RE LOOKING FOR ANSWERS.

A second message appeared.

BUT YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU'RE GOING TO FIND.

Leo stared at the screen.

Then slowly looked back at the photograph.

The photograph of his father.

The man he thought he knew.

The man who apparently had another life.

May you like

And for the first time in eighteen years, Leo wondered if the biggest mystery in his life had never been who he was.

Maybe it was who his father had been.
