Chapter 6: The Hidden Room Beneath The Past
Leo didn't sleep.
Not because he wasn't tired.
He was exhausted.
His body still felt the effects of the cafeteria fight. His shoulder ached slightly. His muscles were sore from the sudden burst of movement.
But none of that mattered.
Every time he closed his eyes, he saw the photograph.
His father.
Daniel.
Tyler's father.
Standing together twenty years earlier.
Three people who had apparently shared a history Leo knew nothing about.
The hardest part wasn't discovering that his father had secrets.
Everyone had secrets.
The hardest part was realizing the person he trusted most had helped hide them.
By sunrise, Leo was already awake.
He sat on the edge of his bed, staring at the old wooden box sitting in the corner of his room.
He had owned it for years.
A box filled with things his father left behind.
Old watches.
A few handwritten notes.
Pictures.
Nothing unusual.
Nothing that seemed important.
But now everything felt different.
Leo walked over and opened it.
The first thing he saw was an old photograph.
Not the one Tyler showed him.
Another one.
His father standing beside him when Leo was five years old.
A normal memory.
A normal father.
Leo touched the picture.
"Who were you?""
The question felt strange.
Because he wasn't asking about a stranger.
He was asking about the person who taught him how to ride a bike.
The person who stayed up late helping with homework.
The person who always told him that kindness mattered more than winning.
Then Leo noticed something underneath the photographs.
A small envelope.
He had seen it before.
Many times.
But he had never opened it.
His father had written his name on the front.
LEO.
Only that.
Nothing else.
His heart started beating faster.
For eighteen years, he had assumed it was just another memory.
Now he wasn't sure.
Slowly, he opened it.
Inside was a single piece of paper.
Five words.
WHEN YOU ARE READY, LOOK BELOW.
Leo stared.
Below.
Below what?
He turned the paper over.
Nothing.
Then he looked around his room.
His father's old habits suddenly felt like clues.
The way he organized things.
The way he kept certain items hidden.
The way he always avoided talking about his past.
Leo walked toward the wooden floor near his closet.
He remembered something.
A small sound from years ago.
A loose floorboard.
His father had fixed it.
Or at least, Leo thought he had.
He moved the carpet aside.
There it was.
A small difference in the wood.
A place where the floor didn't perfectly match.
Leo grabbed a tool from his desk and carefully lifted the board.
Underneath was a narrow space.
Empty.
Except for one small metal key.
Leo picked it up.
His hands went cold.
Because now he knew.
His father hadn't just left memories.
He had left instructions.
When Leo arrived at the dojo, Daniel immediately knew something was different.
"You found something.""
It wasn't a question.
Leo held up the key.
Daniel's expression changed.
Not surprise.
Fear.
That was enough.
"You knew about this.""
Daniel looked away.
"Where did you find it?""
"In my room.""
Daniel became quiet.
Leo stepped forward.
"You knew.""
Daniel sighed.
"Your father told me he left something for you.""
"What?""
"I didn't know where.""
"But you knew.""
Daniel nodded slowly.
"Yes.""
Leo looked disappointed again.
"You keep saying you wanted to protect me.""
Daniel lowered his head.
"Because I did.""
"No.""
Leo shook his head.
"You wanted to protect the secret.""
Daniel didn't argue.
And that hurt.
More than anger.
More than betrayal.
Because Leo wanted him to deny it.
He wanted Daniel to say he was wrong.
But he didn't.
Daniel walked toward the back of the dojo.
"There is something you need to see.""
Leo followed.
The old man stopped in front of a locked wooden door.
Leo had seen that door before.
Hundreds of times.
But he had never seen it opened.
Daniel inserted a key.
Not the one Leo found.
A different one.
The door unlocked.
Inside was a small room.
Dust covered everything.
Old training equipment.
Boxes.
Documents.
Photographs.
A hidden room inside the dojo.
Leo stared.
"How long has this been here?""
"Twenty years.""
Daniel walked inside.
"This was where your father kept records.""
Leo entered slowly.
The room felt frozen in time.
Like nobody had touched it since his father left.
On the wall were pictures.
His father.
Tyler's father.
Daniel.
But there were others.
People Leo didn't recognize.
"Who are they?""
Daniel looked uncomfortable.
"People your father worked with.""
"Doing what?""
Daniel didn't answer.
Leo looked at him.
"Still protecting me?""
Daniel closed his eyes.
Then finally said:
"Your father helped people who had no one else.""
Leo waited.
"But?""
Daniel sighed.
"But some people used his skills for things he never intended.""
Leo looked at the documents.
"Like what?""
"Violence.""
The word was quiet.
But heavy.
Leo looked back.
"My father wasn't violent.""
"No.""
Daniel shook his head.
"He wasn't.""
"Then what happened?""
Daniel walked to a locked cabinet.
"He found out someone was using the group for personal power.""
"Victor Hale.""
Daniel froze.
Leo noticed.
"You know him.""
Daniel looked at him.
"Yes.""
"Who is he?""
Daniel opened the cabinet.
Inside were several files.
"The person your father was trying to stop.""
Leo took the files.
The first page had a name.
VICTOR HALE.
Below it were years of notes.
Meetings.
Locations.
Names.
Leo flipped through them.
Then he stopped.
One page caught his attention.
A handwritten note.
His father's handwriting.
Leo recognized it immediately.
IF ANYTHING HAPPENS TO ME, DO NOT LET THEM FIND LEO.
His breathing changed.
Daniel saw the page.
"He wrote that the night before he disappeared.""
Leo looked up.
"The night before?""
Daniel nodded.
"You knew he was in danger?""
Daniel looked away.
"I suspected.""
Leo felt anger rising.
"Suspected?""
"Leo...""
"No.""
His voice shook.
"You knew something was wrong and you let us live normally?""
Daniel's eyes were filled with regret.
"Your father begged me.""
Leo stopped.
"He begged me to keep you away from this life.""
The room became silent.
Leo looked back at the note.
For the first time, he understood.
His father wasn't hiding his past because he was ashamed.
He was hiding it because he was afraid.
Afraid for Leo.
Then a sound interrupted them.
Footsteps.
Both turned.
The dojo door opened.
Tyler walked in.
But this time, he wasn't alone.
Brad stood beside him.
Leo was surprised.
Brad looked uncomfortable.
Almost embarrassed.
"What are you doing here?""
Leo asked.
Brad looked away.
"I need to talk.""
Leo crossed his arms.
"About what?""
Brad glanced at the room.
His expression changed.
"You found it.""
Leo looked at him.
"Found what?""
Brad looked at Tyler.
Tyler answered.
"The same thing Victor is looking for.""
Leo felt his stomach tighten.
"You know about this?""
Brad nodded.
"My father told me.""
"Your father?""
Tyler's father.
Another connection.
Another secret.
Brad stepped closer.
"Leo...""
For the first time, Brad's voice wasn't arrogant.
It was honest.
"I'm sorry.""
The apology surprised everyone.
Brad looked down.
"About the cafeteria.""
Leo said nothing.
"I was angry. I wanted to prove something.""
He paused.
"But I didn't know what was happening.""
Leo studied him.
"You knew about my father?""
"No.""
Brad shook his head.
"But I knew Tyler was looking for something.""
Tyler looked at his brother.
"You weren't supposed to get involved.""
Brad looked back.
"I already did.""
The brothers stared at each other.
And Leo noticed something.
For all their differences, they were both carrying the same burden.
A family secret.
A past they didn't choose.
A truth they were forced to inherit.
Then the lights suddenly went out.
The entire dojo went dark.
Everyone froze.
A second later, a phone screen illuminated the room.
Leo's phone.
A new message.
Unknown number.
One sentence.
YOU FOUND THE ROOM.
Leo's heart stopped.
Another message appeared.
NOW I KNOW WHERE YOU ARE.
Daniel immediately looked toward the windows.
Tyler moved.
Brad stepped forward.
And Leo finally understood.
They weren't searching for the truth anymore.
The truth had found them.
Outside the dojo, a shadow moved past the window.
Someone was watching.
May you like
Someone who knew everything.
And they were getting closer.
