Chapter 9: The Lie Before The Attack

I went to my parents' house the next morning.

I didn't tell them I was coming.

I didn't want another carefully prepared explanation.

I wanted the truth.

My father opened the door.

His face changed the second he saw me.

"Claire.""

"Where is Mom?""

He stepped aside.

She appeared in the hallway.

The look on her face told me everything.

She knew why I was there.

"I saw the picture.""

Neither of them spoke.

"The one of Rachel talking to Dad before the cookout.""

My father's shoulders dropped.

"Claire...""

"What did she tell you?""

My mother looked away.

And that was when I knew.

They had been hiding something.

"Tell me.""

My father sighed.

"Rachel came to us because she was upset.""

"About me?""

He nodded.

"What did she say?""

My mother whispered:

"She said you were trying to replace her.""

I almost laughed.

"Replace her?""

"She said after the baby was born, you wouldn't need your family anymore.""

I stared at them.

That was ridiculous.

And yet...

I understood.

That was Rachel's fear.

Being forgotten.

Being unnecessary.

But fear didn't excuse cruelty.

"What else?""

My father hesitated.

"She said you had been telling people she was a failure.""

My eyes widened.

"I never said that.""

"I know that now.""

"Now?""

The word came out sharper than I intended.

"You believed her before?""

Nobody answered.

I walked into the living room.

The room where Rachel and I used to decorate the Christmas tree.

The room where we watched movies as kids.

The room where my mother had once told us sisters were supposed to protect each other.

Funny how those lessons disappeared when they became inconvenient.

"Why didn't you ask me?""

My mother started crying.

"We thought there was truth on both sides.""

I turned.

"What truth?""

She couldn't answer.

Because there wasn't any.

Rachel had created a version of reality where she was always losing.

And everyone around her kept adjusting themselves to fit it.

Then my father said something that stopped me.

"Rachel wasn't only angry because of the baby.""

I looked at him.

"What does that mean?""

He took a breath.

"There was something else.""

My heart sank.

"What?""

He looked toward the stairs.

"She found out we changed our will.""

I froze.

"What?""

My mother closed her eyes.

"We wanted to make sure you and the baby were taken care of.""

I felt sick.

"Rachel knew?""

"Yes.""

"And she thought...""

My father nodded.

"She thought we were choosing you over her.""

There it was.

The final piece.

Money.

Attention.

Love.

Everything Rachel measured.

Everything she compared.

I whispered:

"She thought my daughter was taking her place.""

Nobody spoke.

Then my phone rang.

Vanessa.

I answered immediately.

"Claire, you need to listen carefully.""

Her voice was urgent.

"What happened?""

"I found something.""

"What?""

"Something from before the cookout.""

I walked away from my parents.

"What?""

A pause.

Then Vanessa said:

"Rachel didn't just plan what she was going to say after she attacked you.""

My heart raced.

"She planned the attack itself.""

The world seemed to stop.

"What?""

"I found messages.""

"Between who?""

"Rachel and someone else.""

My fingers went cold.

"Who?""

Vanessa's voice dropped.

"Your cousin Kayla.""

I stopped breathing.

"No.""

"I know what it sounds like.""

"No. Kayla recorded everything.""

"Yes.""

"Then why?""

"Because Rachel asked her to.""

I couldn't move.

The girl who saved me.

The girl who captured the truth.

The girl everyone trusted.

Could she have been part of it?

Vanessa continued.

"I don't know the whole story yet.""

I stared at the street outside my parents' house.

"Then find out.""

"I will.""

The call ended.

I stood there frozen.

Because I suddenly realized something terrifying.

The person who exposed Rachel might have been helping her first.

And if that was true...
