Chapter 12: The Truth That Broke The Family Apart

For a moment, I couldn't understand the word.

Not because I didn't hear it.

Because my brain refused to accept it.

Marcus.

My husband.

The man who held my hand through every doctor's appointment.

The man who talked to my belly every night.

The man who had spent years building a life with me.

Rachel said his name.

And suddenly the room felt impossible.

I looked at her.

"Say that again.""

She started crying.

"I didn't want to tell you.""

"Say it again.""

"Claire...""

"Say it.""

My voice shook.

"Tell me exactly what you mean.""

My father looked horrified.

My mother covered her mouth.

Rachel whispered:

"Before you got pregnant... Marcus and I...""

I didn't let her finish.

"No.""

The word came out before I could stop it.

"No.""

Rachel looked down.

"I'm sorry.""

I laughed.

A broken sound.

"You're sorry?""

She nodded.

"I made mistakes.""

"Mistakes?""

I stepped back.

"You don't get to call this a mistake.""

My entire body was shaking.

Because suddenly every memory felt different.

Every conversation.

Every family gathering.

Every time Rachel looked at Marcus.

I searched my mind for signs.

Warnings I missed.

Things I ignored.

Because I wanted to believe the best.

Because I trusted my husband.

Because I trusted my sister.

And they both betrayed me.

"When?""

Rachel cried harder.

"Before your wedding.""

I froze.

Before my wedding.

Not recently.

Not after years of marriage.

Before.

A terrible thought entered my mind.

"Did you sleep with him?""

Rachel closed her eyes.

That was enough.

I felt like the ground disappeared.

My father looked at Marcus.

Wait.

Marcus.

I turned.

He wasn't there.

I hadn't noticed.

He had left the room.

The realization terrified me.

"Where is he?""

Nobody answered.

I ran outside.

Not because I knew what I would find.

Because I needed to find him.

Marcus was standing beside his truck.

His hands were on his head.

He looked destroyed.

"Marcus.""

He turned.

And the expression on his face broke me.

Not guilt.

Pain.

"Claire...""

I stopped.

Because I didn't know what question to ask first.

Did it happen?

Why didn't you tell me?

Did you love her?

Was I second choice?

Finally, I whispered:

"Is it true?""

He looked away.

And that hurt more than anything.

Because silence was an answer.

I felt tears burn my eyes.

"How long?""

"One night.""

I closed my eyes.

"One night.""

"Claire, please.""

"No.""

My voice cracked.

"One night is enough.""

He stepped closer.

"I was drunk.""

I stared.

That was the first excuse.

And I hated it.

Because it sounded like Rachel.

A reason.

Not responsibility.

"I made the biggest mistake of my life.""

I looked at him.

"Then why did you marry me?""

His face broke.

"Because I loved you.""

"Did you love her?""

"No.""

The answer came instantly.

Too instantly.

But I didn't know what to believe anymore.

"Did she love you?""

He looked away.

And that hesitation destroyed something inside me.

"Marcus.""

He swallowed.

"She thought she did.""

I felt sick.

Then everything connected.

Rachel's jealousy.

Her obsession.

Her anger.

Her hatred when I became pregnant.

She wasn't only losing attention.

She was losing the fantasy that someday Marcus would choose her.

The baby wasn't the beginning of the problem.

It was the final proof that she had lost.

I went back inside.

Rachel was still crying.

I looked at her.

"All these years.""

She couldn't meet my eyes.

"You watched me build a life with him.""

"I'm sorry.""

"You watched me love him.""

"Claire...""

"You watched me carry his child.""

She covered her face.

"I know.""

"No.""

My voice became quiet.

"You don't.""

Because she didn't.

If she understood, she would have never kicked me.

She would have never lied.

She would have never tried to destroy me.

My mother stepped forward.

"Claire...""

I looked at her.

"Did you know?""

She froze.

That answer was enough.

"You knew?""

"We found out later.""

I stared at my parents.

Everyone knew something.

Everyone had pieces of my life.

Except me.

I was the last person to know.

The final secret.

The person everyone protected from the truth while protecting the people who hurt me.

I walked toward the door.

"Where are you going?""

My father asked.

I looked back.

"Home.""

With tears in my eyes, I said the words I never thought I would say.

"I need to decide if I still have one.""

Because the two people I trusted most had broken my heart.

May you like

And now I had to decide whether love was something that could survive betrayal...

Or whether some things could never be repaired.
