Chapter 11: The Plan To Take Everything

I couldn't speak.

The park suddenly felt too loud.

Children screaming.

Dogs barking.

People laughing.

A normal afternoon happening around me while my entire reality changed.

"Why?"" I finally asked.

Kayla looked down.

"She said Marcus was the only reason you weren't alone.""

I frowned.

"What does that mean?""

"She thought if she could make him doubt you...""

She didn't finish.

She didn't need to.

I felt a chill.

Rachel didn't just want attention.

She wanted isolation.

She wanted me without support.

Without people who believed me.

Without anyone strong enough to challenge her.

"How?""

Kayla hesitated.

"She talked about making you look unstable.""

My heart stopped.

"Unstable?""

"She said pregnancy hormones would make people believe anything.""

I closed my eyes.

The cruelty of it made me sick.

Rachel had planned to use the very thing I was most vulnerable about.

My pregnancy.

My emotions.

My fears.

She wanted people to see me as irrational.

The angry pregnant woman.

The difficult sister.

The problem.

"Did she say anything about Marcus?""

Kayla nodded.

"She said Marcus deserved to know the truth about you.""

"What truth?""

Kayla looked uncomfortable.

"I don't know.""

But I had a feeling.

A terrible feeling.

When I got home, I told Marcus everything.

He listened quietly.

Too quietly.

When I finished, he stood and walked to the window.

For a moment, I thought he was angry.

Then I realized he was hurt.

"Marcus?""

He turned.

"Do you know what bothers me most?""

I shook my head.

"She thought she could manipulate me.""

He walked back toward me.

"She thought I didn't know my own wife.""

My eyes filled.

Because that was the thing Rachel never understood.

Marcus knew me.

He knew the real me.

Not the version Rachel created.

The next morning, Marcus received a message.

From Rachel.

I saw his face change.

"What?""

He handed me the phone.

The message was simple.

Marcus, I think Claire is becoming dangerous. I think she needs help.

I stared.

I actually laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was unbelievable.

She had kicked me.

She had lied.

She had manipulated people.

And now she was saying I was dangerous.

Marcus immediately replied.

Don't contact me again.

Rachel responded within seconds.

You don't know the whole story.

Marcus typed:

I know enough.

Then blocked her.

For the first time in days, I felt something close to relief.

But it didn't last.

That evening, my father called.

His voice was serious.

"Claire, you need to come over.""

"Why?""

"Because Rachel admitted something.""

My heart dropped.

"What?""

"She says there is a reason she reacted the way she did.""

I closed my eyes.

"What reason?""

My father was silent.

Then:

"She says Emma isn't the only thing she lost.""

I frowned.

"What does that mean?""

"I don't know.""

"Where is Rachel?""

"At the house.""

I almost said no.

I should have said no.

But some part of me still wanted answers.

So I went.

Rachel was sitting in the living room.

No anger.

No tears.

Just exhaustion.

"I know you're never going to forgive me.""

I stayed standing.

"Maybe.""

She looked surprised.

I continued:

"Because forgiveness isn't something you demand.""

She nodded.

"I deserve that.""

For once, she didn't argue.

"Then tell me the truth.""

She looked at me.

"The truth?""

"Why?""

Her eyes filled.

"Because I lost everything.""

I waited.

"Six months ago, I found out something.""

"What?""

Rachel looked down.

"I was pregnant.""

The room went silent.

I felt my breath leave.

"What?""

She nodded.

"I didn't tell anyone.""

"Why?""

"Because I lost the baby.""

My heart softened for half a second.

Not because what she did was forgiven.

But because grief was powerful.

And grief could destroy people.

"I didn't know.""

"Nobody did.""

She wiped her face.

"And then you announced your pregnancy.""

I understood.

Not the hatred.

But the pain.

"You saw my happiness and remembered your loss.""

Rachel nodded.

"I hated myself for feeling angry at you.""

Her voice broke.

"But I did.""

I looked at her.

"And you decided I deserved to suffer because you were hurting?""

"No.""

But her answer was too quick.

I waited.

Finally, she whispered:

"I don't know.""

That honesty was more frightening than a lie.

Because it meant even Rachel didn't understand herself.

Then she said:

"There is one more thing you don't know.""

I stared.

"What?""

She looked toward my father.

Then back at me.

"My baby wasn't the only thing I lost.""

A cold feeling moved through me.

"What else?""

Rachel's eyes filled with tears.

"The father of my baby.""

I froze.

"Who?""

She looked at me.

May you like

And when she said the name, my entire world stopped.

"Marcus.""
