Chapter 6: The Message That Changed Everything

After the family meeting, I didn't cry.

That surprised me.

I expected tears.

I expected anger.

I expected to break.

But instead, I felt empty.

Sometimes betrayal doesn't hurt immediately.

Sometimes your mind protects you by making everything feel distant.

Marcus and I drove home without speaking.

Halfway there, he finally said:

"How are you?""

I looked out the window.

"I don't know.""

That was the honest answer.

Because what do you do when the person who hurt you isn't a stranger?

What do you do when the person who tried to destroy your happiness is someone who shared your childhood?

When we got home, I found an envelope waiting by the door.

No name.

No return address.

Just my name written across the front.

Claire.

I picked it up.

Marcus immediately looked concerned.

"Do you know who sent it?""

I shook my head.

Inside was a printed photograph.

My blood ran cold.

It was Rachel and me.

From years ago.

We were teenagers.

Standing outside our old house.

Smiling.

Happy.

On the back of the photo was a sentence.

I thought you deserved to know the truth about your sister.

My hands trembled.

There was another piece of paper.

A message.

I read the first line.

And everything inside me froze.

Rachel didn't lose her job because of bad luck.

She lost it because of what she did.

I looked at Marcus.

"What?""

I kept reading.

The message explained that Rachel hadn't been fired.

She had been removed after a serious incident at work.

An incident she had never told anyone about.

An incident involving another woman.

Another accusation.

Another moment where Rachel claimed she was the victim.

My heart pounded.

Because suddenly, the question wasn't only why Rachel hurt me.

The question was whether this was the first time.

Marcus took the paper from my hand.

His face changed as he read.

"Claire...""

I looked at him.

"What?""

He was quiet for a long moment.

Then he said:

"I think your sister has been hiding a lot more than we know.""

I stared at the photograph.

At the smiling girl who used to promise she would protect me.

I wanted to believe this was a misunderstanding.

I wanted to believe Rachel had simply broken under pressure.

But the truth was beginning to appear.

And it was darker than I imagined.

My phone suddenly rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

"Hello?""

A woman's voice came through.

"Is this Claire?""

"Yes.""

"My name is Vanessa.""

I sat up.

"How do you know me?""

There was a pause.

Then she said:

"Because I'm the reason your sister was fired.""

My heart stopped.

"Who are you?""

Her voice became quieter.

"Someone who tried to warn people about Rachel before she hurt someone else.""

I looked at Marcus.

He immediately knew something was wrong.

Vanessa continued.

"I saw the video online.""

My grip tightened around the phone.

"And I knew I couldn't stay silent anymore.""

"Why?""

The answer came softly.

"Because Rachel doesn't just get angry.""

A pause.

"She destroys people.""

I couldn't breathe.

The room suddenly felt smaller.

My sister.

The person I had defended my entire life.

The person I had made excuses for.

The person my family was protecting.

Maybe she wasn't just jealous.

May you like

Maybe she was dangerous.

And Vanessa was about to tell me everything. :::
