Chapter 9: The Secret Hidden Inside My Mother’s Legacy
That night, my father couldn’t sleep.
Neither could I.
There was too much happening.
Too many questions.
Too many pieces that didn’t fit together.
Around midnight, I found him sitting alone in the living room.
The lights were off.
Only the city glow came through the windows.
“You should sleep.””
He looked up.
“You sound like your mother.””
The comment caught me off guard.
“What do you mean?””
He smiled faintly.
“She used to say that whenever I worked too much.””
I sat across from him.
“You miss her.””
It wasn’t a question.
He looked down.
“Every day.””
For a moment, we were just two people grieving the same person.
Not father and daughter.
Not the man who failed and the daughter who left.
Just two people who had loved the same woman.
“I should have listened to her more.””
I looked at him.
“About what?””
“Everything.””
He laughed quietly.
“She always knew when something was wrong.””
I thought about the trust.
The inheritance.
The house.
The way she had prepared for my future.
“Dad.””
“Yes?””
“Did Mom ever tell you about this estate?””
He looked confused.
“What estate?””
I hesitated.
“She knew about this property.””
His expression changed.
“What?””
I walked to the cabinet and brought out the cedar box.
I opened it.
Then I removed the photograph.
I handed it to him.
He stared at it.
His face slowly changed.
Because on the back of the photograph was another note.
One I had never shown anyone.
I had always thought it was only meant for me.
But now, looking at my father, I wondered.
Maybe it was meant for both of us.
He read the words silently.
Then his hands started shaking.
“What does this mean?””
I looked at him.
“I don’t know.””
The note said:
**Samuel, if Paige ever needs this place, it means something happened that made her feel like she had nowhere else to go. Please remember something important: she is not a burden. She is not a responsibility.
She is the strongest person I know. Protect her when I cannot.**
My father covered his mouth.
For several seconds, he said nothing.
Then he whispered:
“She knew.””
I nodded.
“She knew you might fail me.””
Those words hurt.
But they were true.
My father looked devastated.
“I promised her.””
“I know.””
“And I broke that promise.””
I didn’t answer.
Because there was nothing to say.
Then he looked at me.
“Paige.””
“Yes?””
“Can I fix this?””
The question was simple.
But the answer wasn’t.
Because forgiveness was not a switch.
Trust was not rebuilt in one conversation.
Love did not erase damage.
But people could change.
If they truly wanted to.
“I don’t know.””
He nodded.
“I understand.””
I appreciated that.
No pressure.
No guilt.
No demand.
Just acceptance.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered cautiously.
“Hello?””
A man’s voice responded.
“Paige Anderson?””
“Yes.””
“My name is Detective Harris. I’m investigating the financial situation involving your father’s company.””
I looked at my father.
He immediately became serious.
“How can I help?””
The detective paused.
“We found something unusual.””
“What?””
“The transactions connected to the missing funds.””
My grip tightened.
“What about them?””
“They weren’t random.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“What do you mean?””
“They were transferred into accounts connected to someone close to your family.””
I looked at my father.
Then the detective said the words that changed everything.
“The money trail leads directly to Gwendolyn Anderson.””
The room went silent.
May you like
Because the woman who had spent years telling me I didn’t belong…
May have been the person who had been stealing from the family all along.
