Chapter 2: The Secret My Father Never Discovered

The next morning, I woke up before sunrise.

Not because I had an alarm.

Not because someone was yelling downstairs.

Not because I was preparing myself for another day of pretending everything was fine.

I woke up because for the first time in years, my mind was quiet.

I made coffee in my kitchen, walked outside onto the balcony, and watched the city slowly come alive.

The view was incredible.

But strangely, I wasn’t thinking about the money.

Or the house.

Or proving anything to my family.

I was thinking about my mother.

She had always told me one thing.

“Never confuse being loved with being tolerated.””

When I was younger, I never understood what she meant.

Now I did.

My father had tolerated my presence.

Gwendolyn had tolerated my existence.

But neither of them had made me feel chosen.

And that was the difference.

My phone buzzed again.

This time, it wasn’t my father.

It was my attorney, Daniel.

“Good morning, Paige. Congratulations again.””

I smiled.

“Thank you.””

“The final transfer documents are complete. The estate is officially registered under your name.””

I looked around.

“Good.””

“There is one more thing.””

I leaned back.

“What?””

“There has been some activity from your father’s side.””

My expression changed.

“What kind of activity?””

“Nothing illegal. But your stepmother contacted a real estate agent yesterday.””

I frowned.

“Why?””

A pause.

“Apparently, she is planning renovations.””

I almost laughed.

Renovations.

Of course.

Gwendolyn had already started changing my old room before I had even been gone for twenty-four hours.

“What exactly did she say?””

“She asked about converting the upstairs bedroom into a professional content studio.””

I closed my eyes.

Chloe.

Of course.

The bedroom that represented my mother.

The room where I had spent years keeping her memories alive.

To them, it was just a bigger space.

A prettier background.

A place for Chloe to record videos.

I felt anger rise inside me.

But this time, I didn’t let it control me.

“Let them.””

Daniel sounded surprised.

“Are you sure?””

“Yes.””

Because something inside me had changed.

The old Paige would have fought.

She would have driven back.

She would have demanded respect.

She would have begged her father to understand.

But the new Paige knew something important.

People who truly valued you did not need to be convinced.

And people who didn’t value you would never understand your worth.

After ending the call, I opened my laptop and started working.

I had spent years building my career quietly.

While everyone thought I was simply the daughter living in her father’s house, I had been creating something of my own.

A company.

A future.

A life.

By noon, my assistant had sent me the latest reports.

Revenue had doubled.

A major investor wanted a meeting.

A magazine wanted to feature my company.

The same people who had once ignored my opinions were now asking for them.

Funny how quickly the world changed when nobody could dismiss you anymore.

That afternoon, I received another call.

Unknown number.

I almost ignored it.

But something made me answer.

“Hello?””

A woman’s voice spoke.

“Is this Paige Anderson?””

“Yes.””

“This is Elena from the Phoenix lifestyle magazine. We are preparing a feature on young entrepreneurs in Arizona, and we would love to include your new estate as part of the story.””

I looked around.

My estate.

The word still felt strange.

“How did you know about my home?””

The woman hesitated.

“Your purchase became public record.””

My stomach tightened slightly.

Public record.

That meant eventually, people would know.

My father would know.

Gwendolyn would know.

I thanked her and ended the call.

Then I stood by the window.

Because suddenly, I realized something.

I had spent years hiding because I didn’t want conflict.

But secrets never stayed buried forever.

Especially not when those secrets involved a house on a hillside worth millions.

And somewhere across town, my family was about to discover that the daughter they had thrown away wasn’t the one who lost everything.

She was the one who had everything all along.
