Chapter 11: The Trap Hidden Behind the Family Smile
The next morning, I woke up to thirty-seven missed calls.
Twenty-three from unknown numbers.
Nine from my father.
Five from Chloe.
I immediately knew something had happened.
I grabbed my phone and called Chloe first.
She answered instantly.
“Paige.””
Her voice was shaking.
“What happened?””
“It’s Mom.””
My stomach tightened.
“What about her?””
“She came back.””
I sat up.
“Where?””
“She’s at Dad’s office.””
That surprised me.
“Why?””
Chloe hesitated.
“She wants to talk.””
I almost laughed.
Of course she did.
Now that the truth was coming out, she wanted a conversation.
Not an apology.
Not accountability.
A conversation.
“Did Dad let her in?””
“No.””
“Then how is she there?””
Silence.
Then Chloe whispered:
“She said she has information.””
That was interesting.
People like Gwendolyn always had information.
Usually information they used as a weapon.
“I’m going there.””
“Paige, wait.””
“What?””
“Please be careful.””
I smiled slightly.
The fact that Chloe was now warning me about her own mother said everything.
When I arrived at my father’s office, security was already outside.
The building felt tense.
Employees whispered quietly.
Everyone knew something was wrong.
Inside, I found my father standing across from Gwendolyn.
The woman who had once ruled every room she entered now looked completely different.
Her makeup was perfect.
Her clothes were expensive.
Her posture was confident.
But her eyes revealed the truth.
She was scared.
The second she saw me, her expression changed.
“Paige.””
I didn’t respond.
I simply looked at her.
“What do you want?””
Her lips pressed together.
“Is that how you speak to family?””
I almost smiled.
“You only remember family when you need something.””
My father looked uncomfortable.
But he didn’t stop me.
Good.
Because this was not the time for him to protect her feelings.
Gwendolyn looked at him.
“You told her?””
My father’s face hardened.
“You lied to me.””
Her expression shifted.
“I was trying to protect us.””
“No.””
His voice was stronger than I had ever heard.
“You were protecting yourself.””
That hit her.
For a moment, she looked almost hurt.
Then the mask returned.
“You don’t understand.””
“Then explain.””
She looked between us.
“I made mistakes.””
Mistakes.
A word people used when they wanted to shrink their actions.
Not crimes.
Not betrayal.
Mistakes.
“How much?”” my father asked.
She looked away.
“Samuel.””
“How much money?””
Her silence answered.
My father closed his eyes.
“Tell me.””
“Almost one million.””
Chloe, who had just entered the room, gasped.
I looked at Gwendolyn.
“One million?””
She quickly said:
“It wasn’t like that.””
“How was it?””
“I borrowed money.””
My father stared at her.
“Without telling me?””
“I knew you would say no.””
There it was.
The truth.
She didn’t hide because she was protecting him.
She hid because she knew he would stop her.
“You stole from me.””
“No.””
Her voice became sharper.
“I was trying to secure our future.””
I stepped forward.
“Your future.””
She looked at me.
“You always think everything is about you.””
I stared at her.
“No.””
My voice was calm.
“That’s the problem.””
She frowned.
“What?””
“Everything was always about you.””
The room went quiet.
“You wanted my bedroom because Chloe needed a studio.””
“You pressured Dad because you wanted control.””
“You moved money because you wanted security.””
“You lied because you wanted to avoid consequences.””
I paused.
“And somehow, every time you hurt someone, you still found a way to make yourself the victim.””
Her expression hardened.
“You have no idea what I sacrificed.””
I almost laughed.
“Sacrificed?””
“Yes.””
She stepped closer.
“I raised you.””
I looked at my father.
Then back at her.
“No.””
The word was quiet.
“But you lived with me.””
That sentence destroyed her argument.
Because she knew.
She had never been my mother.
She had never tried to be.
She had simply wanted the authority of a parent without the responsibility.
Then Marcus entered.
Everyone turned.
His face changed when he saw me.
Not surprise.
Fear.
“Marcus.””
My father’s voice was cold.
“What are you doing here?””
Marcus looked around.
“I heard there was a misunderstanding.””
I smiled.
A misunderstanding.
That was the word everyone used before the truth came out.
Detective Harris entered behind him.
“Actually, Mr. Anderson, I think we’re past misunderstandings.””
Marcus froze.
The detective stepped forward.
“You are being asked to answer questions regarding financial fraud.””
Gwendolyn went pale.
Marcus immediately looked at her.
And that was the moment I noticed something.
She looked back at him.
Not like a partner.
Like someone realizing she had been betrayed too.
Because maybe Marcus had never cared about her.
Maybe she was just another person he used.
The police escorted Marcus away.
Gwendolyn remained standing.
Broken.
For the first time, I saw her without the confidence.
Without the control.
Without the mask.
And strangely…
I didn’t feel happy.
I felt tired.
Because revenge was not as satisfying as people imagined.
Watching someone fall didn’t erase the years they hurt you.
It didn’t bring back time.
It didn’t repair wounds.
May you like
It simply proved one thing.
Truth eventually found its way out.
