Chapter 9: The Voice From The Past
The person behind the messages agreed to meet after school.
A public place.
A crowded place.
A place where nobody could force anyone into silence.
Mateo and Sofia waited outside a small coffee shop near the school.
They didn’t know who they were meeting.
They only knew one thing.
The person was afraid.
Five minutes passed.
Then ten.
Mateo looked nervous.
“Maybe they changed their mind.””
Sofia shook her head.
“No.””
“How do you know?””
“Because scared people don’t usually send messages like that.””
A teenager approached them.
A girl.
Maybe sixteen.
She stopped several feet away.
“Are you Mateo?””
He nodded.
The girl looked at Sofia.
“You’re the one who turned the camera back on.””
Sofia nodded slowly.
The girl took a deep breath.
“My name is Lily Carter.””
Mateo froze.
“Carter?””
She nodded.
“Evelyn Carter was my aunt.””
Nobody spoke.
The girl looked ashamed.
“I know what you’re thinking.””
Mateo shook his head.
“I’m not.””
“Yes, you are.””
She looked down.
“You’re wondering why someone related to her would help you.””
Honestly?
He was.
Lily sat down.
“My aunt wasn’t always like this.””
Sofia listened carefully.
“She used to be kind.””
Mateo frowned.
“Then what happened?””
Lily looked away.
“Power.””
That answer sounded familiar.
“She learned that if nobody challenged her, she could do whatever she wanted.””
Lily opened her backpack.
Inside was an old envelope.
“I found this in her house.””
She placed it on the table.
“What is it?””
“Copies.””
Sofia opened the envelope.
Inside were printed documents.
Complaints.
Emails.
Private notes.
And one document at the top.
A handwritten statement.
Mateo read the first line.
His hands went cold.
“This is from a student.””
Lily nodded.
“My aunt made me promise never to tell anyone.””
“Why?””
“Because she knew people would believe her.””
Sofia looked through the papers.
“She kept these?””
Lily nodded.
“She thought keeping records meant she had control.””
Mateo looked confused.
“Why would she keep evidence against herself?””
Lily gave a sad smile.
“Because people like her always think they’ll never lose.””
The documents revealed years of manipulation.
Students threatened with punishment.
Complaints redirected.
Parents ignored.
And at the center of everything…
Richard Hale.
“He knew,” Lily said.
Mateo looked up.
“What?””
“He knew about every complaint.””
Sofia’s voice became quiet.
“So the teacher wasn’t the only problem.””
Lily shook her head.
“No.””
She pointed at one document.
“This is the person who protected her.””
Mateo stared at the signature.
Richard Hale.
Again.
And again.
And again.
A pattern.
A history.
A secret.
Then Lily said something that made all three of them go silent.
“There’s one more thing.””
“What?”” Mateo asked.
“My aunt wasn’t trying to destroy the camera footage.””
Sofia frowned.
“Then what was she trying to do?””
Lily looked at them.
“She was trying to find out who was watching.””
A chill moved through Mateo.
“What do you mean?””
Lily lowered her voice.
“The camera wasn’t just recording the classroom.””
She pointed toward the documents.
“The district installed hidden monitoring software months ago.””
Sofia’s eyes widened.
“Why?””
Lily looked at Mateo.
“Because Richard Hale suspected someone was going to expose them.””
The realization hit.
They had not discovered the camera.
The camera had discovered them.
And somewhere inside the district system…
Someone else had been watching the entire time.
Someone who knew the truth.
May you like
Someone who had been silent.
Until now.
