Chapter 8: The Hidden List Of Names

The recording changed the investigation overnight.

But it also created a new problem.

Nobody knew who they could trust.

The school district announced that an independent review would begin.

Parents demanded answers.

News stations started asking questions.

But behind the scenes, something strange happened.

Several employees refused to speak.

Teachers who had complained about Ms. Carter suddenly claimed they remembered nothing.

Documents disappeared.

Emails were missing.

People who once wanted justice now wanted silence.

Mateo noticed something.

The truth was not fighting against one person.

It was fighting against a system.

And systems were harder to defeat.

Sofia spent the weekend researching.

Her bedroom was covered with notes.

Names.

Dates.

Documents.

Connections.

Her mother walked in late Saturday night.

“You’re still awake?””

Sofia quickly closed her laptop.

“Yeah.””

Her mother looked at the papers.

“What are you working on?””

Sofia hesitated.

Then decided she was tired of hiding.

“The school.””

Her mother’s expression changed.

“What happened?””

Sofia explained everything.

The camera.

Mateo.

The teacher.

The missing records.

When she finished, her mother sat beside her.

“Sofia.””

“What?””

“Are you sure you want to keep doing this?””

The question hurt.

Because it wasn’t about whether she was right.

It was about whether she was safe.

“I don’t know.””

Her mother touched her hand.

“Being brave doesn’t mean you aren’t afraid.””

Sofia looked down.

“It just means you decide something matters more.””

Those words reminded her of Mateo.

So she opened her laptop again.

“I found something.””

Her mother looked at the screen.

A spreadsheet.

A list of complaints.

Not one.

Not two.

Twenty-three.

All connected to Ms. Carter.

And next to several names was the same note.

“Reviewed by R.H.””

Richard Hale.

Sofia’s mother stared.

“Who is that?””

“The person who made them disappear.””

Monday morning, Sofia brought the information to Dr. Wells.

The principal read through the documents carefully.

Her face became more serious with every page.

“Where did you get this?””

“I found it.””

Dr. Wells looked up.

“That’s not an answer.””

Sofia stayed quiet.

The principal sighed.

“I understand why you did it.””

Then she looked back at the list.

“This changes everything.””

Mateo, sitting beside Sofia, asked:

“How many students?””

Dr. Wells looked at the pages.

“Over the years?””

She paused.

“More than twenty.””

The number hit harder than expected.

Because Mateo realized something.

He wasn’t the first.

He was just the first one who had proof.

That afternoon, the school received another surprise.

Ms. Carter resigned.

The announcement came through email.

“Due to personal circumstances, Ms. Evelyn Carter has chosen to step away from her teaching position.””

Mateo read the message twice.

“She quit.””

Sofia shook her head.

“No.””

“What?””

“She escaped.””

Mateo frowned.

“She can’t teach anymore.””

“But she also doesn’t have to answer questions every day.””

That was the difference.

Leaving wasn’t the same as being held responsible.

That night, Mateo’s father watched the news.

A reporter stood outside the school.

“Officials are investigating allegations involving a former teacher and possible misconduct within the district.””

Mateo stood in the doorway.

His father looked at him.

“You okay?””

Mateo nodded.

Then stopped.

“No.””

His father smiled sadly.

“Good.””

Mateo looked confused.

“Good?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because pretending you’re okay when you’re hurting only helps the people who hurt you.””

Mateo sat beside him.

“I’m tired.””

“I know.””

“I don’t want to fight anymore.””

His father looked at him.

“Then don’t fight alone.””

That night, Mateo received a message.

Not from Sofia.

Not from Lucas.

From an unknown number.

One sentence.

“I was one of them.””

Mateo stared.

Another message appeared.

“I was one of the students Ms. Carter hurt.””

Then:

“I know where the original files are.””

Mateo immediately showed Sofia.

Within minutes, they were both awake.

Because they understood.

The missing records.

The erased complaints.

The hidden truth.

Somewhere, there was evidence.

Real evidence.

And someone was finally ready to reveal it.
