Chapter 11: The Attack On The Truth

The next morning, the flash drive was gone.

Not lost.

Gone.

Mateo noticed immediately.

Because he had placed it inside his backpack the night before.

The same backpack his father had repaired three times.

The same backpack he carried everywhere.

He searched every pocket.

Nothing.

“Sofia.””

She looked up.

“What?””

“It’s missing.””

Her face changed.

“The drive?””

He nodded.

They both knew.

Someone had taken it.

But the question was when.

And how.

Dr. Wells immediately called security.

The school searched cameras.

Checked entrances.

Reviewed access logs.

But the strange thing was…

There was no evidence.

No person entering the office.

No suspicious activity.

Nothing.

Like the person who took it had always belonged there.

That was the most frightening part.

By noon, another problem appeared.

The district released a statement.

It was short.

Carefully written.

And dangerous.

It claimed that recent accusations were “based on incomplete information.””

It claimed that “student statements had been influenced by outside pressure.””

And worst of all…

It mentioned Mateo by name.

Sofia read it on her phone.

“They’re attacking him.””

Mateo looked at the screen.

“They’re making me the problem again.””

Dr. Wells looked furious.

“They’re trying to control public opinion.””

“But why?””

Sofia answered before anyone else could.

“Because they don’t have the evidence anymore.””

Everyone looked at her.

“If they can’t destroy the truth, they destroy the person telling it.””

Mateo felt that sentence hit harder than he wanted.

Because he had seen it happen before.

That afternoon, Mateo’s father received a call from an unknown number.

After hanging up, his face was pale.

Mateo noticed immediately.

“Dad?””

His father looked away.

“What happened?””

“Nothing.””

Mateo stood.

“Don’t.””

His father looked at him.

“Don’t what?””

“Don’t pretend.””

A long silence.

Finally, his father sighed.

“They asked questions.””

“About me?””

“Yes.””

Mateo felt anger rise.

“They called you?””

“They wanted information.””

“Why?””

His father looked at him.

“Because they know you matter.””

That was not comforting.

It was terrifying.

Later that evening, Sofia discovered something.

She had been searching old district records when she found a strange entry.

A file created six months before the classroom incident.

Title:

“Student Risk Review.””

Inside were names.

Including Mateo.

Sofia immediately called him.

“Mateo.””

“What?””

“I found something.””

She sent him the document.

His expression changed as he read.

“They were watching me.””

“Yes.””

“But why?””

Sofia kept reading.

Then she found the answer.

A note at the bottom.

“Potential source of exposure.””

Mateo felt cold.

“They knew I might talk.””

Sofia nodded.

“They were afraid of you before you even knew what was happening.””

The next day, a new student approached Mateo.

A girl he didn’t recognize.

She looked nervous.

“Are you Mateo?””

“Yes.””

“My name is Emma.””

She looked around.

“I need to tell you something.””

Mateo waited.

“I was on the list.””

Sofia stepped closer.

“What list?””

Emma swallowed.

“The one you found.””

Silence.

“You too?””

Emma nodded.

“They watched students who complained.””

Mateo’s heart sank.

“How many?””

Emma looked at them.

“More than you think.””

That evening, they met in secret.

Emma brought something.

A small notebook.

“I kept records.””

Sofia opened it.

Inside were names.

Dates.

Events.

Everything students remembered.

Mateo stared.

“You all knew.””

Emma shook her head.

“No.””

She corrected him.

“We all suspected.””

That difference mattered.

Because suspicion was easy to ignore.

Evidence was harder.

Then Emma pointed to the final page.

“This is why I contacted you.””

At the bottom was one sentence.

Written years earlier.

“The next student who exposes the district will be removed.””

Mateo stared.

“Removed?””

Emma nodded.

“They don’t mean expelled.””

Nobody spoke.

Because everyone understood.

They meant erased.

And suddenly Mateo realized something terrifying.

The fight had never been about one teacher.

It had never been about one classroom.

May you like

They had been building this machine for years.

And now Mateo was standing directly in front of it.
