Chapter 6: The Person Behind The Erased Footage

The recording changed everything.

Within minutes, the meeting became chaos.

The board members demanded explanations.

Parents shouted questions.

Teachers avoided eye contact.

And Ms. Carter sat completely still.

Her entire defense had collapsed.

But Mateo noticed something.

Richard Hale wasn’t panicking.

That scared him.

Everyone else looked shocked.

Richard looked calculating.

Like he already knew what came next.

The board president turned toward him.

“Mr. Hale, did you know about this recording?””

Richard stood slowly.

“No.””

The answer came too quickly.

Sofia noticed.

Mateo noticed.

Everyone noticed.

The board president narrowed her eyes.

“Then why were you in the classroom after the incident?””

Richard paused.

A second too long.

“I was investigating.””

“Before the official investigation began?””

Silence.

That question hit harder than anything else.

Because now people were asking the right questions.

Not just about Ms. Carter.

About him.

That evening, Dr. Wells called Mateo and Sofia into her office.

She closed the door.

“There is something you need to know.””

Mateo sat down.

“What?””

“The camera footage wasn’t just interrupted.””

She placed a file on the desk.

“Someone attempted to erase it completely.””

Sofia frowned.

“Who?””

“We don’t know yet.””

Mateo looked at the file.

“But you have an idea.””

Dr. Wells didn’t answer.

That was an answer.

Sofia leaned forward.

“Someone inside the district?””

Dr. Wells looked uncomfortable.

“Yes.””

The room became quiet.

“Why would someone protect her?””

Dr. Wells opened the file.

Inside were complaints.

Many complaints.

All against Ms. Carter.

Dating back years.

Mateo stared.

“She’s done this before?””

“Yes.””

“Then why is she still teaching?””

Nobody spoke.

Because that was the real question.

A complaint.

A warning.

Another complaint.

Another warning.

And every time…

Nothing happened.

Sofia felt angry.

“She was protected.””

Dr. Wells nodded.

“Someone made sure those reports disappeared.””

Mateo looked at the papers.

Then he saw a name.

A signature.

His heart stopped.

“Richard Hale.””

Dr. Wells looked at him.

“Yes.””

The man who claimed he was there to help.

The man who controlled district records.

The man who knew how to make problems disappear.

Mateo slowly understood.

This was bigger than one classroom.

Bigger than one teacher.

The missing camera.

The altered attendance records.

The hidden complaints.

They were all connected.

Later that night, Sofia received another message.

This time, from the same unknown number.

But the words were different.

“Stop looking.””

Her face turned serious.

Another message arrived.

“You don’t know who you’re fighting.””

Then a final one.

“You will regret becoming a witness.””

Sofia stared at the screen.

For the first time since this began…

She felt afraid.

Not for herself.

For Mateo.

Because whoever was behind this had spent years hiding the truth.

And now two children had exposed it.

Mateo looked at her phone.

“What did they say?””

Sofia hesitated.

Then handed it over.

Mateo read the messages.

His expression changed.

“They’re trying to scare us.””

Sofia nodded.

“Yeah.””

A pause.

“But it’s working.””

Mateo looked out the window.

The school building stood silent in the darkness.

A place that was supposed to protect children.

A place where someone had learned how to hide.

Then he remembered his father’s words.

Don’t let the world convince you that your kindness is a weakness.

Mateo turned back.

“No.””

Sofia looked at him.

“No?””

“We’re not stopping.””

She smiled slightly.

“Why?””

Mateo looked at the messages again.

“Because if they’re scared…”

He handed the phone back.

“It means we’re getting close.””

But neither of them knew the truth.

They weren’t just getting close.

May you like

They had already found the secret.

And the people who buried it were preparing to fight back.
