Chapter 9: The Reason He Wanted Me Gone
I didn’t answer immediately.
Marcus stood near the doorway, waiting.
For once, he wasn’t controlling the conversation.
He wasn’t giving a speech.
He wasn’t surrounded by family and friends who already believed his side.
He was alone.
Just him.
And me.
“Say it.””
He looked nervous.
“I don’t know how.””
I almost smiled.
“Try honesty.””
He looked down.
That was the first sign.
Marcus always looked confident when he was hiding something.
But now?
Now he looked afraid.
“I made mistakes.””
I crossed my arms.
“That’s a very general statement.””
He took a breath.
“I’m in trouble.””
The words surprised me.
“What kind of trouble?””
He sat down.
“My company.””
I stared.
“What about it?””
He rubbed his face.
“Things are worse than I told you.””
I felt something shift.
Because suddenly, this wasn’t only about Olivia.
“What does that mean?””
He looked at me.
“I lost money.””
“How much?””
Silence.
“Marcus.””
“Almost everything.””
I stared at him.
“How long have you known?””
He didn’t answer.
And once again, I knew.
“Months.””
He nodded.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because I was embarrassed.””
I laughed softly.
“Embarrassed?””
I shook my head.
“So you told everyone I was the problem instead?””
His eyes filled with shame.
“I didn’t know what else to do.””
And there it was.
The real reason.
Not love.
Not happiness.
Fear.
Marcus had not just wanted a new life.
He wanted an escape.
From debt.
From failure.
From responsibility.
And I had become the easiest person to blame.
“Were you planning to leave me and start over with Olivia?””
He looked away.
“I don’t know.””
That answer hurt.
Because it meant he had considered it.
“You wanted to replace me.””
“No.””
“Yes.””
My voice was quiet.
“You wanted a version of your life where you didn’t have to face what you had done.””
He didn’t deny it.
For a long time, neither of us spoke.
Then Marcus said:
“I was scared.””
I looked at him.
“So was I.””
He looked up.
“What?””
“I was scared too.””
My voice softened.
“I was scared watching you change.””
Silence.
“I was scared feeling you pull away.””
I looked at him.
“I was scared wondering what I did wrong.””
His expression broke.
“But I stayed.””
That was the difference.
“I stayed and tried.””
His eyes filled with tears.
“I know.””
“No, Marcus.””
I shook my head.
“You know now.””
I walked toward the window.
“You didn’t know when it mattered.””
Outside, the neighborhood was quiet.
Normal.
People walking their dogs.
Cars passing.
Families living their ordinary lives.
Nobody knew that inside our house, a marriage was ending.
Or maybe it had ended long ago.
“I need you to move out.””
Marcus looked shocked.
“Maya.””
“I’m serious.””
He stood.
“Where am I supposed to go?””
I looked at him.
“That’s a question you should have asked before you planned a future without me.””
His face fell.
And for the first time, I didn’t feel guilty.
That surprised me.
Because for years, his pain had always become my responsibility.
But not anymore.
He packed a small bag that night.
Before leaving, he stopped at the door.
“I do love you.””
I believed that he believed it.
But love without honesty wasn’t enough.
Love without respect wasn’t enough.
Love without choosing each other wasn’t enough.
“I loved you too,” I said.
His eyes filled.
“Too?””
I nodded.
“I don’t know if I still do.””
And that was the most honest thing I had said in months.
After he left, I sat in the quiet house.
My house.
For the first time in a long time, it felt like mine.
Then my phone rang.
A number I didn’t recognize.
I answered.
A woman’s voice spoke.
“Is this Maya?””
“Yes.””
There was a pause.
“I think you need to know what Marcus did before the birthday party.””
My heart sank.
Not again.
“What do you mean?””
The woman took a breath.
“He didn’t just tell people you were leaving him.””
I waited.
“He also tried to change the ownership of something that belonged to both of you.””
I froze.
“What?””
Her voice became quieter.
“Your house.””
And suddenly, I realized Marcus’s betrayal had never only been emotional.
It was financial.
