Chapter 11: The Life He Was Building Without Me
The lawyer’s office was quiet.
Too quiet.
I sat there staring at numbers I couldn’t understand.
Numbers that represented years of trust.
Years of believing we were building something together.
My lawyer, Evelyn, folded her hands.
“Maya, I want you to understand something.””
I nodded.
“Okay.””
“Financial situations like this can become complicated. We need facts, not assumptions.””
I appreciated that.
Because after everything with Marcus, facts were the only thing I trusted anymore.
“What do we know?””
She turned the documents toward me.
“Your joint accounts show several unusual withdrawals.””
“How unusual?””
She looked at the paper.
“Large enough that they should have been discussed with you.””
My throat tightened.
“When?””
“Starting about eight months ago.””
Eight months.
The same time Marcus started becoming distant.
The same time Olivia entered the picture.
The same time he began telling people our marriage was failing.
It all happened together.
I had been looking at separate problems.
But they were connected.
“He was preparing,” I whispered.
Evelyn nodded carefully.
“It appears that way.””
I looked down.
For a moment, I felt something close to grief.
Not because of the money.
Because of what the money represented.
Marcus didn’t wake up one day and betray me.
He made small choices.
Repeatedly.
Quietly.
Until one day, I finally saw the person those choices had created.
When I returned home, Marcus was waiting.
I almost didn’t recognize the man standing there.
Not because he looked different.
Because I saw him differently.
“Your lawyer contacted me.””
I nodded.
“Yes.””
He looked nervous.
“Maya, I can explain.””
I placed my bag down.
“I’m tired of explanations.””
His face fell.
“I made mistakes.””
“You already said that.””
“I was scared.””
“And you keep saying that too.””
He looked frustrated.
“What do you want me to say?””
I looked at him.
“The truth.””
He was quiet.
Finally, he sat down.
“I thought I could fix it.””
“Fix what?””
“Everything.””
I waited.
“My business was failing. I was embarrassed. I didn’t want you to see me as a failure.””
I stared at him.
“You thought hiding everything would make you look better?””
“No.””
“That’s exactly what you did.””
He looked away.
“I thought if I had another option…”
I froze.
“Another option?””
He didn’t answer.
“Marcus.””
He sighed.
“I thought maybe if things got worse, I could start over.””
“With Olivia?””
His silence answered.
I nodded slowly.
“So that was the plan.””
“No.””
“Then what was the plan?””
He looked desperate.
“There wasn’t a plan.””
I almost smiled.
Because that was the problem.
There was always a plan.
Maybe not a perfect one.
Maybe not a complete one.
But there was always a choice.
And Marcus kept choosing himself.
“I need to ask you something.””
He looked up.
“Did you ever intend to tell me?””
He didn’t answer.
I waited.
Finally:
“I don’t know.””
That answer broke something inside me.
Not because it surprised me.
Because it confirmed everything.
He didn’t have a moment where he planned to come clean.
He had a moment where he got caught.
There was a difference.
I walked toward the window.
“Do you know what hurts the most?””
He watched me.
“I don’t even hate you.””
His expression changed.
“I should.””
I turned around.
“I should hate you for what you did.””
He looked down.
“But I don’t.””
My voice became quieter.
“Because I still remember who you were.””
His eyes filled.
“And I hate that.””
For a long moment, neither of us spoke.
Then Marcus said:
“I want to fix this.””
I looked at him.
“No.””
The answer came immediately.
He looked shocked.
“No?””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You want to fix the consequences.””
“That’s not true.””
“Isn’t it?””
I stepped closer.
“You didn’t come to me before the party.””
Silence.
“You didn’t come to me before Olivia.””
Silence.
“You didn’t come to me before the money.””
Silence.
“You came when you realized you could lose everything.””
His face changed.
Because he knew I was right.
“I’m sorry.””
I nodded.
“I believe you.””
That surprised him.
“You do?””
“Yes.””
I looked at him.
“I believe you’re sorry.””
A pause.
“But I don’t believe sorry is enough anymore.””
That night, Marcus slept somewhere else.
Not because I hated him.
Because I needed space.
I needed to hear my own thoughts without his explanations filling every corner.
The next morning, I received a call.
It was from Daniel.
“Maya, I need to tell you something.””
I closed my eyes.
Every time someone said that, my life changed.
“What now?””
His voice was serious.
“I found out why Marcus was so desperate to control the story.””
I waited.
“It wasn’t only the money.””
My heart sank.
“What else?””
A pause.
“Marcus knew someone was about to expose him.””
“Who?””
Daniel hesitated.
“His business partner.””
I frowned.
“What does that have to do with me?””
Daniel’s voice lowered.
“Because the person who was going to expose him…”
May you like
Another pause.
“…was someone Marcus had been hiding from everyone.””
