Chapter 13: The Recording That Revealed Everything
I almost didn’t press play.
The file sat on Aaron’s laptop between us.
A simple audio recording.
A few minutes long.
But somehow, it felt heavier than all the documents, messages, and conversations that had brought me here.
Aaron looked at me carefully.
“I want you to understand something before you hear this.””
I looked up.
“What?””
“I didn’t record this to hurt Marcus.””
I nodded.
“Then why?””
“Because I needed proof.””
His voice was calm, but I could see the frustration behind his eyes.
“Marcus was making decisions that affected everyone. Investors. Employees. People who trusted him.””
I looked at the laptop.
“And me.””
Aaron didn’t say anything.
Because we both knew.
Especially me.
I had trusted Marcus more than anyone.
Aaron pressed play.
At first, there was only background noise.
A restaurant.
People talking.
Glasses clinking.
Then I heard Marcus’s voice.
My entire body went still.
“I can’t keep pretending everything is fine.””
His voice sounded tired.
Not like the man who stood in front of everyone at his birthday party.
Not like the man who blamed me.
This sounded like someone afraid.
Then Olivia spoke.
“What are you going to do?””
My heart tightened.
Hearing her voice made everything feel real again.
Marcus sighed.
“I need to get out before everything collapses.””
Out.
That word stayed with me.
Not fix.
Not repair.
Escape.
Olivia asked:
“What about Maya?””
A long pause.
Then Marcus said:
“She’ll be okay.””
I closed my eyes.
Such a simple sentence.
Such a painful one.
She’ll be okay.
As if I was a person who would magically recover from whatever damage he created.
As if my feelings were something temporary.
The recording continued.
“I don’t want to destroy her,” Marcus said.
Olivia replied:
“Then tell her the truth.””
Another pause.
And then Marcus said something that made my hands go cold.
“I can’t.””
“Why?””
“Because if she knows everything, she’ll fight.””
I opened my eyes.
Aaron looked at me.
I didn’t need to explain.
I understood.
Marcus knew me.
He knew I wouldn’t quietly disappear.
He knew I would ask questions.
He knew I would protect myself.
And instead of respecting that…
He planned around it.
The recording continued.
“I need people on my side first,” Marcus said.
Olivia sounded uncomfortable.
“Marcus…”
“I’m serious. If everyone thinks I’m the one who tried to save the marriage, it changes everything.””
I felt something break inside me.
Not my heart.
Something else.
The last excuse I had been giving him.
I had spent weeks trying to understand why.
Why he lied.
Why he blamed me.
Why he humiliated me.
And now I knew.
Because it worked.
Because he thought controlling the story would protect him.
The recording ended.
The silence afterward was unbearable.
Aaron closed the laptop.
“I’m sorry.””
I stared at the table.
“Thank you for showing me.””
He nodded.
“I know this is a lot.””
“It is.””
I looked at him.
“But I needed to know.””
On the drive home, I didn’t cry.
That surprised me.
Months ago, hearing those words would have destroyed me.
But now?
Now I felt something different.
Peace.
Not because I was okay.
Because I finally stopped searching for explanations.
I knew.
Marcus didn’t lose his way.
He chose a path.
And every step brought him closer to losing me.
When I arrived home, Marcus was in the living room.
He looked up.
“You met Aaron.””
I put my keys down.
“Yes.””
His face changed.
“What did he tell you?””
I stared at him.
“What do you think?””
He stood.
“Maya, listen.””
“No.””
My voice was calm.
“I’ve listened enough.””
That made him stop.
“I listened when you said you were unhappy.””
I walked closer.
“I listened when you said you felt trapped.””
I looked at him.
“I listened when you said you were scared.””
A pause.
“But you never listened when I said I was hurting.””
His expression softened.
“Maya…”
“You didn’t need a wife.””
I shook my head.
“You needed someone to carry your problems and protect your image.””
“That’s not fair.””
“Isn’t it?””
He looked away.
And again, I saw it.
The inability to deny the truth.
“I loved you.””
His voice cracked.
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
He looked at me.
“I really did.””
I nodded slowly.
“I believe that.””
He looked surprised.
“But love isn’t the only thing that matters.””
I took a breath.
“Someone can love you and still hurt you.””
Silence.
“Someone can love you and still betray you.””
His eyes filled.
“Someone can love you and still choose themselves over you.””
I walked toward the stairs.
“Maya.””
I stopped.
“What?””
“I don’t know how to fix this.””
I looked back.
For the first time, I saw him as he really was.
Not powerful.
Not confident.
Just a man who had destroyed something valuable and finally understood the cost.
“You don’t.””
His face fell.
“You don’t fix trust after someone else breaks it.””
That night, I packed a suitcase.
Not because I was running away.
Because I needed to remember who I was without him.
Before leaving, I looked around the house one last time.
The house where we started.
The house where he tried to erase me.
The house where I finally found myself again.
My phone buzzed.
A message from Evelyn.
“Good news. The documents you found are important. We can protect your ownership.””
I read it twice.
Then another message appeared.
This one from an unknown number.
“You think Marcus was the only person lying?””
I frowned.
A second message followed.
“Ask his mother what happened before you two got married.””
I stared at the screen.
May you like
Because suddenly, after everything…
There was one more secret.
