Chapter 12: The Secret That Destroyed His Perfect Story
I met Daniel at a small coffee shop across town.
Not because I didn’t trust him.
Because I didn’t want to sit in my house surrounded by memories.
That house had too many versions of Marcus inside it.
The man I loved.
The man who betrayed me.
The man I was trying to understand.
Daniel looked exhausted when he arrived.
He sat across from me and immediately apologized.
“I’m sorry.””
I shook my head.
“You’ve said that a lot lately.””
He gave a sad smile.
“I know.””
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then I asked:
“What did you find out?””
Daniel looked down.
“It’s about Marcus’s company.””
I waited.
“You know how Marcus always said he was building everything himself?””
I nodded.
“He wasn’t.””
I frowned.
“What do you mean?””
Daniel sighed.
“His business partner, Aaron, invested a lot of money.””
“Okay.””
“But Marcus told people Aaron abandoned the company.””
I stared.
“And?””
“Aaron didn’t abandon it.””
Daniel looked at me.
“Marcus pushed him out.””
I felt a chill.
“Why?””
“Because Aaron found something.””
“What?””
Daniel hesitated.
“He found out Marcus had been hiding financial problems.””
I thought about Evelyn’s words.
The accounts.
The withdrawals.
The documents.
“What does this have to do with me?””
Daniel looked uncomfortable.
“Because Marcus used your name.””
My stomach dropped.
“What?””
“He told Aaron the house and your shared assets could cover the losses.””
I stared at him.
“He told his business partner that?””
Daniel nodded.
“He made it sound like you agreed.””
I felt sick.
Because once again, Marcus had used my name without me.
My reputation.
My trust.
My life.
He had built a safety net using things that belonged to both of us.
“When did Aaron find out?””
“Before the birthday party.””
I looked away.
“So that’s why Marcus rushed everything.””
Daniel nodded.
“He knew Aaron was going to confront him.””
I finally understood.
The party.
The announcement.
The separation story.
The victim narrative.
It wasn’t just about Olivia.
It wasn’t just about his image.
Marcus was trying to create a version of events before the truth caught up.
He wanted everyone to believe he was the innocent husband trapped in a failing marriage.
Because if people believed that…
Maybe nobody would ask what he had done.
I returned home that afternoon.
Marcus was there.
Packing.
He looked at me.
“Where were you?””
I ignored the question.
“Who is Aaron?””
His hands stopped moving.
That was all I needed to see.
“Who told you?””
I laughed quietly.
“That’s your first question?””
He looked away.
“Maya…”
“No.””
I stepped closer.
“I want to know why my name keeps appearing in decisions I never made.””
His face fell.
“I was going to handle it.””
“You always were.””
I looked around.
“You were going to handle the marriage.””
“You were going to handle Olivia.””
“You were going to handle the money.””
“You were going to handle the house.””
My voice became quiet.
“But somehow, I was never allowed to know anything.””
He looked ashamed.
“I was trying to protect you.””
I stared at him.
“That’s the biggest lie you’ve told.””
He looked hurt.
But I continued.
“Protection means standing beside someone.””
I pointed toward the door.
“What you did was hide things from me and call it protection.””
Marcus sat down.
For once, he looked completely defeated.
“I don’t know how I became this person.””
I looked at him.
“Neither do I.””
That answer seemed to hurt him.
Because maybe he expected anger.
Anger would mean I was still fighting.
But I wasn’t.
I was accepting.
And acceptance was something he couldn’t control.
Later that evening, I received another message.
This time, it was from Aaron.
“Can we meet?””
I stared at the screen.
Another person connected to Marcus.
Another secret.
Another piece of a story I never asked to be part of.
I almost said no.
But then I remembered something.
The truth had hurt me.
But lies had nearly destroyed me.
So I replied:
“Tomorrow. Tell me everything.””
Because I was finally done discovering pieces of my own life after everyone else already knew the whole story.
And when Aaron showed up the next day, he brought something that changed everything.
A recording.
May you like
A conversation between Marcus and Olivia.
A conversation they never expected me to hear.
