Chapter 24: The Voice From My Father’s Final Recording

Nobody spoke.

Not one word.

The recording continued playing in my hand.

My father's voice filled the small living room.

A voice I hadn't heard in years.

A voice I never thought I would hear again.

"I spent years believing loyalty meant protecting people from consequences.""

A pause.

"That was my mistake.""

My eyes closed.

Because that sounded exactly like the lesson I had learned.

Family didn't mean hiding everything.

Family meant facing everything.

The recording continued.

"I trusted people because I wanted to believe the best in them.""

A quiet breath.

"But trust without truth becomes dangerous.""

Marcus looked at me.

Both of us were listening to the same man.

The same father.

But for the first time, we were hearing him as adults.

Not children.

"I discovered Richard's actions.""

My grip tightened.

"I discovered the missing money.""

A pause.

"And I discovered that someone helped him.""

The room felt colder.

"Someone who had access to my home.""

My mother looked down.

My heart raced.

"Someone who knew my routines.""

Richard's face became unreadable.

"Someone who knew where I kept important documents.""

My father continued.

"I wanted to believe this person was being manipulated.""

A pause.

"But the evidence became impossible to ignore.""

My mother whispered:

"No.""

I looked at her.

"What?""

She looked terrified.

Not because she was guilty.

Because she knew something.

The recording continued.

"The person who helped Richard was not forced.""

Silence.

"They made a choice.""

I felt my chest tighten.

The recording ended.

A few seconds later, another section played automatically.

My father's voice became quieter.

"Darnell, Marcus...""

The fact that he said both names made Marcus close his eyes.

"I hope you are hearing this together.""

A pause.

"Because that means someone finally did what I couldn't.""

He took a breath.

"Bring my sons home.""

Marcus looked away.

I could see the emotion on his face.

My father had known.

He had always wanted this.

The recording continued.

"There is one final thing you need to know.""

Everyone froze.

"The person who helped Richard...""

The sound became slightly distorted.

Then:

"Was not Loretta.""

I looked at my mother.

She covered her mouth.

A wave of relief crossed her face.

But it disappeared quickly.

Because my father wasn't finished.

"The person who helped him was someone Loretta trusted.""

The recording stopped.

Completely.

Nobody moved.

Not even Richard.

My mind raced.

Someone my mother trusted.

Someone close.

Someone inside the family.

Who?

My mother looked at me.

"Darnell...""

I shook my head.

"Don't.""

Because I knew.

She was about to defend someone.

And I needed the truth first.

My phone rang.

Angela.

Unknown number.

I answered immediately.

"Hello?""

A woman's voice.

Older.

Tired.

"Darnell Hayes?""

"Yes.""

"My name is Angela Brooks.""

Everyone looked at me.

"You know who I am?""

"Yes.""

Her voice trembled.

"I've been waiting for this call.""

"Where are you?""

"I can't tell you.""

I frowned.

"Why?""

"Because they are still looking for me.""

My stomach tightened.

"Who?""

Silence.

Then:

"The same people who tried to stop Thomas.""

I looked at Richard.

"Did my father know the truth?""

"Yes.""

"Who betrayed him?""

Angela didn't answer immediately.

When she did, her voice was barely a whisper.

"Darnell...""

"Yes?""

"You need to understand something.""

"What?""

"Your father didn't die because he discovered the betrayal.""

I froze.

"Then why?""

"Because he discovered who was behind it.""

My breathing stopped.

"Who?""

Another silence.

Then she said:

"The person who arranged everything was not Richard.""

Everyone went still.

"Who was it?""

Angela whispered:

"Someone you have been protecting your entire life.""

I looked at my mother.

She looked terrified.

But not surprised.

That was the moment I realized.

She wasn't afraid of the truth coming out.

She was afraid of who the truth would hurt.

The call ended.

And seconds later, a message appeared.

A photo.

An old family picture.

My father.

My mother.

Richard.

And one more person standing behind them.

Someone I recognized.

Someone I never expected.
