Chapter 18: The Night My Father Never Came Home
The video ended.
But none of us moved.
The screen went black.
The room stayed silent.
The kind of silence that comes after something impossible becomes real.
My father didn't die alone.
Those five words changed everything.
For years, I had lived with one version of the story.
My father was driving home.
There was an accident.
He never made it.
Everyone mourned.
Everyone moved on.
But now?
Now I was standing in a hidden room beneath my childhood home, holding evidence that suggested my father's last moments were not what I had been told.
"Darnell.""
My mother's voice was shaking.
I looked at her.
"How long have you known something was wrong?""
She looked down.
"Since the funeral.""
My chest tightened.
"The funeral?""
She nodded.
"Your father was supposed to meet someone that night.""
"Richard?""
She nodded.
"Yes.""
"Why didn't you tell me?""
Her eyes filled.
"Because Richard came to me after.""
My anger rose.
"What did he say?""
She swallowed.
"He said your father had been under pressure. That he was unstable. That the accident was probably his fault.""
I stared at her.
"And you believed him?""
"No.""
The answer came quickly.
"I didn't.""
That surprised me.
"Then why?""
"Because he showed me something.""
"What?""
"Documents.""
My mind raced.
"What kind of documents?""
"Evidence that made your father look guilty.""
Marcus shook his head.
"He manipulated you.""
My mother nodded.
"Yes.""
I looked at the journal.
My father knew.
He knew Richard was dangerous.
He knew something could happen.
And yet he still tried to fix it.
"Why didn't you go to the police?""
My mother looked at me.
"Because Richard threatened you.""
The words stopped me.
"What?""
"He told me if I spoke, you would lose everything.""
I frowned.
"What does that mean?""
"He said he had evidence that could destroy your father's name.""
She looked at Marcus.
"And yours.""
I understood.
Richard wasn't just controlling my mother.
He was controlling the entire family.
He had used secrets as weapons.
"He knew about Marcus.""
"Yes.""
"He knew about the company.""
"Yes.""
"He knew about the house.""
"Yes.""
I looked at the hidden room.
"So he knew everything.""
My mother nodded.
"Almost.""
"Almost?""
She hesitated.
"There was one thing he didn't know.""
"What?""
She looked at the journal.
"Your father had already prepared a backup.""
I looked around the room.
"The evidence.""
She nodded.
"Yes.""
Marcus picked up another folder.
"Then why didn't he release it?""
My mother looked at him.
"Because he was trying to protect you.""
Marcus laughed bitterly.
"By disappearing from my life?""
The pain in his voice filled the room.
My mother had no defense.
None.
And maybe that was the first honest thing she had ever given him.
I looked back at the video.
"Where did this come from?""
My phone buzzed again.
Another message.
This time, from Simone.
I opened it.
*"I know you found the room.""*
My stomach tightened.
I showed Marcus.
He looked confused.
"How does she know?""
Another message appeared.
*"Because Richard knows too.""*
My blood went cold.
A third message.
*"Leave before he comes back.""*
I looked toward the stairs.
Too late.
A sound came from upstairs.
The front door opening.
Nobody spoke.
My mother froze.
"He found us.""
Marcus moved toward the stairs.
I grabbed his arm.
"No.""
He looked at me.
"We don't know what he wants.""
The footsteps above became louder.
Slow.
Confident.
Someone who wasn't worried about being discovered.
Then Richard's voice echoed through the house.
"Darnell.""
My mother stepped backward.
Because she knew that voice.
She knew exactly what it meant.
Richard stopped at the top of the stairs.
"After all these years...""
He looked down at us.
"You finally found your father's little secret room.""
I stepped forward.
"Why are you here?""
Richard smiled.
"Because I knew eventually someone would open that door.""
Marcus stared at him.
"You killed him.""
Richard didn't react.
Not even slightly.
Instead, he looked at the journal in my hand.
"You should have left the past buried.""
I tightened my grip.
"Why?""
His smile disappeared.
"Because your father was about to reveal something that would destroy more than my life.""
I waited.
"Whose?""
Richard looked directly at my mother.
May you like
Then at me.
"Yours.""
